Mike D’Antoni says he’s ’50-50′ on making coaching debut Sunday

Nov 18, 2012, 3:14 PM EDT

New Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni is interviewed as Lakers' championship trophies are seen in a window above the Lakers' practice court, following a media conference at the Lakers' training facility in El Segundo, California

There’s been no official announcement, and no promise from either the Lakers or from Mike D’Antoni himself that he would make his coaching debut Sunday night in Los Angeles.

But it seemed probable, since D’Antoni has been in place for five days now, and skipped Friday’s contest against the Suns to get a couple of extra days rest.

Sunday morning at the Lakers practice facility, however, D’Antoni said his chances of being on the sideline tonight are just “50-50,” with his energy level remaining a question mark.

From Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News:

He’s trying to conserve as much energy as he can after having recent knee replacement surgery. With the Lakers (4-5) hosting the Houston Rockets (4-5) tonight at Staples Center, D’Antoni’s debut could hinge on that variable.

“The plan is, but I’m still 50-50,” D’Antoni said after morning shootaround here at the Lakers’ practice facility. “I may be jumping the gun a little bit. I threw that day out of the air and people ran with it. So we’ll see.”

D’Antoni is concerned that his presence could become a “sideshow” if he’s unable to actively run the team, and with all eyes on him whenever he does make his head coaching debut, it’s a legitimate consideration.
