J.R. Smith says Jerryd Bayless may have ‘little man’s complex’ after altercation

Nov 17, 2012, 1:00 PM EDT

Late in the second quarter of the Grizzlies’ win over the Knicks on Friday, J.R. Smith and Jerryd Bayless got into it briefly, and received double technicals for the extracurricular activity.

Smith appeared to catch Bayless with an elbow after curling around a Rasheed Wallace screen, and Bayless retaliated with a shot to the face. Both players remained in the game.

Afterward, J.R. Smith didn’t seem to understand what all of the fuss was about. From Marc Berman of the New York Post:

The 6-foot-2 Bayless shoved Smith in the face and then tried to get after the Knicks guard. A livid Bayless had to be restrained by teammates while Smith backpedaled away, laughing at the scene.

“Other than me trying to get the ball, I don’t know what he could’ve been mad at,’’ Smith said after the Knicks’ 105-95 loss to the Grizzlies, their first defeat of the season. “Some small guards have a little man’s complex. They got to work that out.’’

For the record, Smith is listed at 6’6″, and Bayless is listed at 6’3″ according to Basketball-Reference.

This “little-man complex” is apparently a thing, though, because last season Kobe Bryant said the same thing about Chris Paul after one of the games between the Lakers and the Clippers. While Bryant and Paul share the utmost respect for one another as competitors, however, it’s doubtful the same can be said about the relationship between Smith and Bayless.

JR. needs to stay away from that type of nonsense, his value to the team is increasing both he and Melo. should be doing their best to stay out of confrontations at all cost

    • hartdaddy - Nov 17, 2012 at 2:07 PM

& he did & has. It’s funny though that Kobe said the same thing about CP3. It’s a known fact that the smaller a player is the louder/more rowdy they tend to act. (See Brandon Jennings)

        hartmomma…

Never mind JR, elbowed the guy in the sternum/ chest area. I mean, the instigator can’t B and moan, if the smaller guy won’t put up with my crap.

I mean…when I was in the Marine Corps, I quickly learned to respect EVERY man, regardless of size.

My Fellow Marine convinced me, he didn’t have a “Napoleon Complex” because he defended himself, against what he thought was disrespect.

Ahahahahah….you mention kobe and CP3. Why would CP3 have a complex, when he ABUSED kobe….had that boy on SKATES !!!!

        Ahahahahah

JR Smith is and always will be a POS. Just a complete b*tch move and then he tries to act like nothing happened. Kobe can shut up about little man syndrome, dude got b*tchmade by freakin Chris Childs.

    • football58 - Nov 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM

Sounds like letangusespertfplus has little man’s complex too.

      • drewsylvania - Nov 17, 2012 at 4:09 PM

Give him a break, the NHL isn’t on. :(

    • badintent - Nov 18, 2012 at 3:10 AM

Chris Childs grew up a tough ghetto, not a Italian Riviera city like Kobe, and had to play in minor leagues to get to the big show. He didn’t have a smooth stroke but made up for his bad shooting with Charles Oakley like defense and good basketball smarts.Maybe he can hook up with Vanessa, see if she like his stroke better than Kobe’s………………………………………

The announcers – especially Hubie Brown’s way over-the-top reaction – played this up bigger than it really was. J.R. Smith gave him a little cheap shot forearm because he didn’t like the physical play. Bayless shoved him. That’s all there is to it. Give them both techs and move on.

  4. readysethike - Nov 17, 2012 at 1:58 PM

why is jr a pos? i think bayless just has a quick temper…nothing wrong with it really he just plays that way. hes been like that since his days in portland

  5. dclogicatlast - Nov 17, 2012 at 2:40 PM

Bayless shoved Smith’s chest not face.

    • raycharlesj - Nov 18, 2012 at 4:04 PM

dclogicatlast, he must have brushed Smith face because on another site on the plane ride home Smith had a big bandaid on his face, from the watching the game, Smith tried a cheap punk bitch move and Bayless wasn’t having it, at 6’2″ he is not really a small man with small man complex, but even Spud Webb, and Mugsy would have checked that @s$ for that sneaky under handed coward move.

  6. raidmagic - Nov 17, 2012 at 2:43 PM

Just by watching that video that was pretty much a bitch move by JR Smith

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Nov 17, 2012 at 3:16 PM

I’d like to how your logic.

      • Mr. Wright 212 - Nov 17, 2012 at 3:17 PM

I’d like to hear your logic, as to how that could possibly be lmao

      • raidmagic - Nov 17, 2012 at 4:28 PM

Come on man, he turned the corner on the guy then threw his elbow AFTER he was by him…

  7. michaeljordanseviltwin - Nov 17, 2012 at 2:54 PM

Chris Paul all but confirmed his little man syndrome when he said what Pau Gasol did to him is called “Sonnin”

  8. Mr. Wright 212 - Nov 17, 2012 at 3:11 PM

That’s what it looked like live.

  9. lakerluver - Nov 17, 2012 at 3:53 PM

I guess that explains why paulhargis5feet3inches has such an issue with me.

    • saint1997 - Nov 17, 2012 at 4:32 PM

He has an issue with you because you’re stupid

  10. jordanismyidol - Nov 17, 2012 at 4:49 PM

  11. eugenesaxe - Nov 17, 2012 at 5:11 PM

  12. dunkindan - Nov 17, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Just the other day wasn’t there an article about how JR Smith is maturing as an adult?

  13. BigBeachBall - Nov 17, 2012 at 8:37 PM

    It looked like an accident…

    • progress2011 - Nov 18, 2012 at 9:33 AM
