I still think the Sixers got fleeced. Bynum’s got the skills, but I think the effort, health, and maturity factors outweigh them.

Somekat, thanks for finally correctly expressing the opinion of Iggy from a Philly fans point of view. I’m so tired of hearing about our “hatred” of this guy or hearing why nobody gets why we are so “down on him”. These questions always come from outsiders who take the lazy route and just assume it’s Philly fans who have no patience or just want to hate for no reason. Philly fans have watched Iggy night in and night out so maybe we see what he is. Wow. What a concept. As has been statred, he is not a centerpiece player. He is a dime a dozen playground offensive player with no consistent shot who will just throw up lazy heaves at the basket, kjixed in with a few highlight reel dunks that make non-local fans feel that he is more than he is. On the flip side he is a good defender and I give him all the credit in the world in this age of basketball where so few enjoy playing defense, but that doesn’t make him the star that outsiders feel he is. The guy has a good scrimmage for the Olympic team and you get all the soundbites from the other players wondering why he is so underappreciated in Philly. Give me a break. The guy can be a nice extra piece to a team with 2 or 3 real core players, but he will never be one of the core players that makes a difference. You will see, Denver fans. Those 5 for 17 shooting nights will be commonplace, but don’t worry. Those 1 or 2 tomahawk jams you’ll get every night will totally make up for it all.

Sorry, somekat, but I watched the game where Iggy came back to Philly, and was shocked, SHOCKED to hear the reception of boos every time he had the ball.

Yeah, they showed that clip with his highlights during a commercial break and the fans gave him a standing ovation, but I remember watching right after and the boos continued.

Really, I was pretty embarrassed for the fans.

This is a nearly annual event, predictable as falling leaves in Autumn or snow in winter.
Drew gets hurt. Doctors and trainers issue a hopeful prediction for a quick return. Time passes… and passes… and Drew takes at least three times the estimate to return. Drew returns, literally jogs through another month or two. Drew glowers and snarls and pities himself when question about the above.
This is anything but new, it’s a familiar, regular pattern, it IS Andrew Bynum, The Joggin’ Man.
In LA, he was an ancillary piece, and not playing a significant role was insignificant until the playoffs.
In Philly, he was supposed to be the centerpiece, and without him they don’t MAKE the playoffs.
The Joggin’ Man… nice buy, Philly. Were y’all in a coma the last five years? Did you think somehow he’d changed?
At least Iggy came to play, and play hard, come bleep or high water.
Y’all bought a lemon… tastes a little sour about now, doesn’t it.

Not surprising that he will be out for this long.

If I were Sixers’ management I would not give a contract that is more than 3 years after this season. Three years still might be steep.

I’m as die-hard of a Sixers fan as anyone on the planet, and I’ve had an enormous amount of respect for Iguodala since day 1. Any discontent Sixers fans have for Iggy probably stems from the overall lack of success the team has had during his tenure. You think 76er fans would be calling this guy out as a bum if the team was winning consistently?

The real problem: IGUODALA WAS NEVER A #1 SCORER…AND NEVER WILL BE!

The 76ers organization never put Iggy in the best position to win, instead they relied too heavily upon him to carry the load. He’s simply not that guy.

Well, let me amend that. There is SOME risk. The risk being that Bynum’s knee is shot, and all the young guys they have now turn out to be stiffs when they are the main guys, and the 2 picks they traded are top 3 picks (not sure if they have protection on them)

I don’t think that will be the case, even without Bynum I think they sixers contend for the playoffs, and at worst are a 8-10 pick, but I guess that would be worst case. But you would still find that out 2 years earlier than you would have if they kept Iggy

Agree completely, like I said in the post about them not updating his status yesterday,it was A chance worth taking either way. Even if he never plays a game. They needed to go in another direction, they hit their ceiling with Iggy. Worst case scenario, you get a year to see what Holiday/Turner/Young can do being the focus of the team, and get the cap space you would of got for Iggy a year earlier.

I don’t think the fans would blame them even if Bynum doesn’t play a game. It was still a risk worth taking. Either way it was high reward, medium risk. The reward could of been a young, dominant big man and still could be. The worst down side is cap space a year earlier, and a better read on what you have with your young pieces, overall still a positive

Sixers fans aren’t down on Iggy. They just know what he is. A great defender, a very good point forward, athletic as they come, with a very inconsistent jump shot, and no ability to take over a game in crunch time. He is as good a complimentary piece as they come, but he is not a max player. When you pay someone a max deal who isn’t a max player, it cripples your franchise. If he would of signed a deal closer to what Holiday just got, nobody would of complained.

Add to that, his ability to play point forward kept Holiday from really running the point, or Turner playing his natural position, or forced guys like Meeks to start to spread the floor because he can’t shoot, or at into Thad Young’s minutes, and it was time for him to go. Nothing wrong with him, just not the player this team needs.

Peronally, I wanted him gone 2 years ago, but that’s because I feel he doesn’t work on his game the way a “star” should. His problems now (mainly free throw shooting, and a consistent jumper) are the same problems he had the day he came into the league. A great player identifies his weaknesses, works on them and makes them strengths. If he could ever get a jumper that had to be respected, he would be unguardable. But he hasn’t, and his free throw % is ridiculous for a 3(even worse for a 2)

Sixers fans are really down on Iggy, what did he do to make everyone hate him in Philly? Overpaid, yes, but lots of NBA players are overpaid. I never watched Iggy on a regular basis but it seems like the Sixers could have had worse.

No worries here. Media of course won’t report Philly fans patience so far. They are just waiting eagerly for first voice of dissent to rag on us. Last time I posted such a message it wasn’t even put in comments section. Don’t come back until you are close to 100%, play for a contract then. If you play hard and buy in, stay long term. If not, then cap space saved and Iggy gone. Not one of us was begging to trade Iggy for a stud. We wanted him gone, mission accomplished. 4-2 without either. Next story, please.

This is nothing like Ruland because the Sixers gave up the #1 pick in the draft, which turned out to be Brad Daugherty. This was a trade we needed to clear cap space from Iggy’s max deal, which he should have never received in the first place. He’s not a max player.

What would really suck would be if he does well and we get into say the Eastern Conference finals and then we sign him to a max deal and he’s hurt throughout the deal. Now THAT would really suck.

I agree, but damn if it doesn’t stink of that Jeff Ruland deal. At least we didn’t give up Moses Malone this time. Maybe Kwame can develop some low post moves…that is if he can get out there to play too.

Sixers don’t need Bynum until the playoffs. They are good enough right now to get a 4-6 seed. Hopefully, he gets back for the last 30 games, plays well, and contributes to a long playoff run. If not, then no biggie. Sixers got rid of Iggy’s contract and now will have some room under the cap. Win/Win trade, which is how almost every Sixers fan feels. It’s fans of other teams who don’t get that the Sixers could not lose in this trade.
