you’re right, not many fans or bloggers here cared about Gasol at the time of the trade. That’s because they don’t understand Hoops ! Period. Oh yeah , Paul’s brother got game too.When my Knicks got Willis Reed, it was a no brainer to see he would lead them to the championship over the Evil Celtics.We traded Bells away and took Bill off the SG and put him on the wing were his brains and set shot was perfect.

The first of Pat Riley’s championships was with the Los Angeles Lakers and they were pre-built with individuals that would become Hall of Famers (Magic, Kareem, etc). He went on to coach those guys to all but one of his head coaching championships. He had great teams in New York and Miami but didn’t win until 2005 when Miami teamed Shaq with Wade.

Phil Jackson took over a Chicago Bulls team that had young unproven but very talented individuals (Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, etc.) and coached them into winning championships as a team. Similarly when the Lakers let go of Shaq in 2005, Jackson had to rebuild his team with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol who (who by all accounts was soft) and won championships with them.

I think that people forget that Kobe and Michael never won championships without Phil. Also, it doesn’t seem so easy to win championships even if you have a pre-built team ask Mike Brown, Dell Harris and Paul Westhead.

I think Riley is top of the list and a close second is Pop and Phil; with respect to being an “intimidating authoritative presence”. This is simply based on the stories told by the players (i.e. Jordan, Magic, Robinson, Shaq, Duncan, Wade). This is in no way an argument as to who may be a better coach based on championships won. What Phil Jackson has done, unlike the others on your list, is taken a team that is already built and said “now I will coach and we will win”; which has proven to be very smart moves on his part and he is doing that once again at this moment. On the other hand, I do not think that Phil is able to or capable of dealing with rebuilding process, something that Riley and Pop have done numerous times.

shaw doesn’t have an intimidating side to him… no authoritative presence… here’s a list of good coaches who do have it:

3. pop

4. spolestra (barely on this list)

not that many people cared that pau went to the lakers initially. i think what people were more concerned with at that time was the fact kwame was a main component in the deal. many people were just considering pau as a mediocre big man who couldn’t carry his team that far. he played with kobe and that made him a star. now people complain about it after the fact. but at the time, no one got the feeling pau with kobe would roll through the league. like i said before, people were more upset that it was kwame who the lakers sent out. marc gasol turned out pretty well for memphis though.

Hey Eventhorizon04: Pau Gasol got traded for Marc Gasol and Kwame Brown…how did that trade end up? As a Laker fan, Id rather have Marc Gasol. Pau Gasol was not a gift to the lakers as so many people like to say…nor was he traded for Kwame straight up.
