I used to defend DeMarcus when he left college, prior to the draft, and was even supportive of the Kings’ drafting him. I felt they had gotten the steal of the draft. But he has shown that all of the GMs and other NBA personnel who had serious doubts about him were all correct. The kid has talent and real “upside”, particularly now with so few true Big Men, but if no one can convince him to get onto a treadmill and not be a dope on the court, then I think this is what we’re going to get from him for as long as he’s around …

The writer of this and the other thread went WAY over the top in ripping Sean Elliot’s comments. It wasn’t like he said Cousins sucked…or even played poorly. Elliot basically said that Cousins should not have pissed off the Big Fundamental and he was right. I’m a Sixers fan so I couldn’t care less about the Spurs or Cousins or Elliot. But the facts are the facts and now that Cousins has been suspended for 2 games, maybe…just MAYBE…this writer will report something a bit less, to be frank, stupid, when referring to this situation.

Great journalism here. I’m sure it was completely innocuous as you suggested. That’s why the league suspended Cousins two games right?

You seem to have some axe to grind with Elliot. He is a total homer, no question, as are the broadcast crews for many NBA teams. But to say his comments were inflammatory and disrespectful? He said the guy needed to show some maturity and that Duncan responded to the trash talk with superior play (as he has done throughout his career). What is so scandalous about that? It’s not like he attacked Cousins’ family, said he was a bad player, or called him a “nappy headed ho.” Not sure why you are going out of your way to defend Cousins on this one including speculating about how polite he was during a confrontation you apparently have no detailed knowledge of.

No one even knows what Cousins said and they are condemning him. It’s not like he got physical or was shouting at Elliot. In most professions, going to speak with someone you have a problem with is considered a respectable thing to do.

Really? You must be joking. Guy comes on the floor to confront homer announcer about comments that were fairly innocuous. You see nothing wrong with this? Name one other “professional” who has handled such a situation in this manner. Go ahead. I’ll wait. Yeah, he’s totally mature and together—it’s only seemingly everyone who knows him telling him he needs to grow up who’s unprofessional. Um, ok, sure.

The fine isn’t going to be for confronting/intimidating a member of the media. The fine is going to be for attempting to interfere with the Commissioner’s jurisdiction….it’s Stern’s job to strong arm the media into saying what he wants.

Wow, how many times has a commentator made comments that was against the visiting team. This isnt a bar or the streets, n meet me outside. So cousins is cool trash talkin, but when its done to him, he wants to fight,lol. Elliot was doin what most of us would do, u trash talk my quiet friend, im gonna say something to you. No punches thrown. No guns drawn. If the NBA starts penalizing its players for trash-talkin, there wont be much of a league to watch. Elliot and Cousins are grown men, and both well versed with the trash-talkin associated with BBall. Neither would have achieved success if they couldnt handle it. Hell, the leagues ulimate marketing image, and its current GOAT, was a master at trash talking. Seems to me that the league wants to now over-sanitize everything. If the league really wants to do something, the Commish needs to arrange to get Mr Cousins out of Sacramento. Send him to Boston! Please??

As a Spurs fan living in Austin, I get to watch all Spurs games, and have listened to Sean for a good while. He isn’t as disrespectful as this situation makes him out to be. In fact, I heard him make his comments on Cousins, and they weren’t nearly as bad as people are making them out to be. I’m not real sure why the man isn’t allowed to have a rooting interest; he IS the Spurs broadcaster, after all. Are the Spurs the only team not allowed to have homers? Ridiculous.

Because a broadcast team isn’t held to any standards if professionalism. Elliott is and was a homer who used the media to berate a player…real professional. No issues with Cousins taking offense and voicing it to Elliott.

Austin Carr is much worse, trust me. I have listened to every team’s local guys and he’s the biggest homer out there. Quinn Buckner is right there also. But Sean Elliott and Carr are the Hawk Harrelsons of the NBA.
