Many professional athletes, many coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, are involved in year-round charity work. It is true that there are many low-profile persons helping, that never get the accolades. And we should somehow do something to fix that. But this report was genuine, and a much needed attempt by the media to be fair and balanced. Everyday people dont have DUI and domestic problems hitting the front page, either.

You dont need to love Melo. Just be fair when passing judgement.

serious does it take a hurricane to make professional athletes want to help out. there are people all over the world working hard volunteering and they get no recognition at all. mello delivers food and gets a page on it. this is for his own image not out of his own heart.

Thanks for reporting this here. Larry Johnson, aka GrandMahmah, was also putting in work in Staten Island. The news here in NY/NJ showed both of them unloading box trucks, not profiling for the cameras, but actually manually removing supplies from box trucks. No smiles, no self-promotion, just work. And the people in need didnt show any hint of being props for a celebrity photo-op. Real good TV!

Here’s the problem I have about this, I have no doubt there are some kind-hearted players in the league but how much is it genuine and how much is it about making the NBA look good? ( David Stern ) Hopefully it was a personal gesture.
