When I was in 6th grade, a teammate’s dad who had no business “coaching” us at all…decided he would install the “Princeton” offense into our gameplay. We were a group of young kids with no experience playing with one another.Needless to say this offense had us thinking way too much on screens, back door cuts, and we started the year 0-3 even despite having the best player in the league. A new coach came in the fold and had us play a much simpler game utilizing our strengths, especially the strengths of our key player…who was the tallest and most athletic guy in our small community. We didn’t lose another game the rest of the season and cruised to double-digit victories straight to a championship.

The NBA is a bit more complex than that, you cannot over-simplify your gameplan. On the other hand, if you ask your guys to become overly-cerebral than you’re simply going to take away from their athletic abilities. This is a game dominated by athletes, after all.
