Rondo, Rivers fire back Wade for “punk play” comment

Nov 1, 2012, 5:01 PM EDT

That’s the play in question.

Rajon Rondo, for much of the Celtics season opener against the Heat, felt he wasn’t getting the calls when he drove the lane, particularly on contact with Dwyane Wade. So with the game out of reach in the final minute, a frustrated he gave a little of what he felt he was getting to Wade.

Rondo got a flagrant for that. After the game, Wade called it a “punk play.”

Thursday, both Doc Rivers and Rajon Rondo fired back.

Rivers — who has said previously he didn’t think Rondo deserved a flagrant for that, said he thought Wade was tougher than this, via the twitter of A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com.

Then there was what Rondo said after Thursday’s practice, videoed by ESPN (hat tip to The Point Forward):

“I mean, I don’t think it was a hard foul. [Wade] sold it a little bit, and that’s basketball. They were up, he drove to the hole, I didn’t want to give up a layup. Simple as that. I didn’t yank him down, or, dirty plays that you’ve seen him play in the past. So that’s what it is.”

It’s pretty clear Rondo was referring to the play in the playoffs a couple years back where Wade and Rondo got tangled up and went to the ground and Rondo ended up with his elbow bent backwards. An injury that took Rondo a long time to recover from. This feud has some history to it.

This Celtics vs. Heat feud — whether it is Rondo and Wade or Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen — is going to go on all season. But if the Celtics want real revenge there is only one way to get it, and in that first game Miami showed Boston where the benchmark is.

  1. heat256 - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:07 PM

Can we just skip the regular season and get to the playoffs where MIA can send the Celtics home, yet again?

    • kilo0986 - Nov 1, 2012 at 9:45 PM

Doesnt change the fact wade is a little b1tch

  2. cakemixa - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:07 PM

    lol the celtics suck

  3. sasquash20 - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:16 PM

Both Rondo and Wade are punk bitches

    • moseskkim - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:20 PM

Nah that’s unnecessary. Why so much hate? They’re just entertainers getting paid big for what they do. No need call them that!

      • sasquash20 - Nov 2, 2012 at 7:03 AM

For one I’m a die hard Sixers fan so I hate both of these Tinkerbells. 2nd Wade is a punk bitch. Remember the Wade coughing scene with James? When Dirk was sick in the finals 2 years ago? Yeah I do and I remember how punk his play was against Rondo before. Wade is exactly what a punk is. Go put your big boy pants on Wade even if they are pink. As for Rondo it all has to do with my hate of everything the Celtics are and have been. But hate is good for division rivalries.

      • sasquash20 - Nov 2, 2012 at 7:08 AM

The love fest in the NBA is what is killing it. Instead of teaming up to win maybe players should have a set and try and do it without teaming up and making super teams. We need more hate among the ball players I mean “entertainers”. This love fest makes me sick.

  4. Mr. Wright 212 - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:21 PM

OR the play last year against Indiana, which Heat fans swear didn’t happen.

    • southbeachtalent - Nov 2, 2012 at 4:17 PM

You mean last year? When we won the championship?? ahhh yes we remember that quite fondly.

  5. thetruth702 - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:21 PM

We don’t even have our full starters in so pretty sure they didnt show us where it stands. Took em to game 7 last year without having bradley and a hurt allen. You guys get too excited the first game of the year. When you get to 17 championships you’ll learn to wait till playoffs to get too excited

    • zeedoubleyou - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:49 PM

Kinda takes the luster out of your argument when you factor in that Bosh missed half the series and Wade was clearly not 100%.

How many times will the Heat knock the Celtics out of the playoffs? Not one, not two, not three….

    • bozosforall - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:28 PM

16 of those titles are old and moldy. But if you want to bring up sheer numbers, the Yankees laugh at a mere 17 titles.

      • andyhr17 - Nov 2, 2012 at 10:36 AM

It must just be a coincidence that all of your favorite teams are some of the best ever spread throughout the country. Just fascinating.

I also find it entertaining that you try to be the first person to post negative on any Celtics story, yet are stunningly quiet on any Lakers post when they’re not winning.

      • bozosforall - Nov 2, 2012 at 1:03 PM

        Sounds like jeslousy to me.

      • bozosforall - Nov 2, 2012 at 12:58 PM

I’ve posted plenty on Laker threads, little Puh C. As for my fav teams, all were chosen by me as a youngun, so I’m not changing them now. At least I exercised free will in my rooting interests, unlike you Boston crybabies who just did what your mommy told you to do and rooted for the local teams.

      • andyhr17 - Nov 2, 2012 at 1:44 PM

Yes, rooting for your hometown team terrible. Everyone should pick the most popular/winningest team at the time to follow.

      • bozosforall - Nov 3, 2012 at 5:54 PM

You have no room to talk, rooting for the Celtics but not the Red Sox

      • bougin89 - Nov 2, 2012 at 3:14 PM

“At least I exercised free will in my rooting interests, unlike you Boston crybabies who just did what your mommy told you to do and rooted for the local teams.”

It takes a different level of ignorance to say something like this. Really Bozo, you should get an award or something.

      • bozosforall - Nov 3, 2012 at 5:56 PM

Your ignorance knows no bounds, bungin69.

    • miamatt - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:37 PM

Let’s see.. “We don’t even have our full starters in” so the excuses begin already…

and how has it gone since Miami came into the league in 1988? Oh, that’s right 2 titles to 1 in the Heat’s favor. Not that 2 is all that impressive, but that gap is going to get a lot wider before it gets narrower. Can’t wait to watch the boys in green get spanked out of the playoffs for a 3rd straight year.

  6. bluburt - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:25 PM

This is going to be delicious…

  7. eugenesaxe - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:32 PM

The only “punk” in this instance is the whining. Wade should’ve taken the hard foul and shoved it up Boston’s tail next game.

  8. ryanmaxfield27 - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:33 PM

Rondo is a punk always taking cheap shots on the court or to reporters… I’m not surprised tho. He learned from the best KG.

    • rtfinch - Nov 2, 2012 at 8:28 AM

Didn’t DWade give Kobe a broken nose and concussion? …… in an allstar game? Who takes cheap shots?

      • pglive21 - Nov 2, 2012 at 11:56 AM

He never said that Wade wasn’t a punk (he is). He just said that Rondo is one and learned it from KG (who’s the dirtiest player in the game, this side of Metta).

  9. warriors2533 - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:38 PM

I think wade is a little bitch… He is a dirty player and always hating on rondo

  10. cantonbound13 - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:44 PM

Wade is such a pu$$#!!! Those fouls were common when Jordan played. The players now a days could never survive in Jordan’s era. The game has become way too sissified.

    • zeedoubleyou - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:54 PM

Did you know that MJ also turned water into wine and freed the slaves?

It goes both ways, Jordan’s pushoff of Russell probably gets called in today’s game too.

      • rtfinch - Nov 2, 2012 at 8:30 AM

Russell also gets called for handchecking in today’s game.

  11. warriors2533 - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:50 PM

    Wades a bitch

  12. 1972wasalongtimeago - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:54 PM

    My middle school, 1981

Bobbie Sue: Did you hear what Kelly Jean said about you?

    Betty Jo: What?

Bobbie Sue: She called you a Bit**

Betty Jo: Oh yeah? You tell her I think she’s a slut.

Guess nothing’s changed, except Wade is Kelly Jean, Rondo is Betty Jo, and PBT is Bobbie Sue.

  13. spzzie - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:58 PM

Its funny to me when celtics fans talk about 17 championships. Dude you’ve won one since the 80′s. but that was a weak play by rondo

    • phaden27 - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:27 PM

It’s funny when people like you pretend they don’t exist, but if your team had 17 titles wouldn’t you say it to? Come on now..

      • miamatt - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:40 PM

Nobdoy says they don’t exist but when you bring THAT up in a completely unrelated arguement… you really got nothing.

      • phaden27 - Nov 6, 2012 at 9:37 PM

Just like when I bring up your title has an asterisk because of the shortened season? Come on man lets not cheapen our teams achievements.

      • phaden27 - Nov 6, 2012 at 9:49 PM

I’m not sure how the OP bring up the C’s 17 type is unrelated but we’ll just file this under Miami Fan Delusions. Why shouldn’t I talk about the 17 title my team has, I know bandwagon Lebron fans certainly would. They can’t get enough of his first.

  14. jjordannba - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:05 PM

Wade really should be the last one talking punk plays considering Wade may have more punk plays then anyone in just the past 2 years. Wade thinks he is above everyone else and is a major hypocrite.

Last year in the Pacers series he was mad that he didn’t get a call on the offensive end so he basically shoulder tackles Darren Collison to the ground on a fastbreak, Which they gave a flagrant 1, though it clearly was a flag. 2, had any of the Pacers players done that to Wade it would have been a flagrant 2 and a suspension.

Jacked up Kobe’s nose in a meaningless All-star game
Threw Rip Hamilton to the floor in a late reg. season game out of frustration. And many more punk plays. Wade is one of the biggest prima-donna’s in the league.

    • phaden27 - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:28 PM

^ This should be at the top.

  15. paulhargis53 - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:09 PM

It’s nice that you leave out other players:

Heat players out? Bosh 5 games
    Hobbled? Wade.

Celtics players out? Wilcox, Green, Bradley all series
    Hobbled? Pierce ,Allen.

They may not be all as good as Bosh and Wade, but it still doesn’t help to have 5 out if your tip 10 players out or hurting.
You heat fans Kurt Helun included, need to stop acting like the Celtics were at full strength and things “broke right” for them to make the ECF. How far they got DESPITE the injuries is remarkable.

Kinda takes the luster off, doesn’t it?

    • bozosforall - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:37 PM

I’m sure if I wanted to waste the time, I could show how every single New England/Boston title lacks luster because other teams had injuries or the like that kept them from winning instead…but I’ll leave that kind of excuse making to the biggest whiners in all of sports fan domain…the crybaby New England/Boston fan base. Pudhummer53 being the “head” guy in that group.

    • pantsfreezone - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:41 PM

I dunno dude. Those rings the Heat got Monday night looked full of luster.

And if you want to talk about acting, Boston beat Atlanta on some of the worst officiating in the history of sports, got dragged to a game 7 by the 76ers, played tough against a hurt Bosh and Wade, but you forget Boston wouldn’t even be in the ECF IF DERRICK ROSE DOESN’T BLOW OUT HIS ACL. So please, do everybody a favor Celtics fans and just stop.

    • borderline1988 - Nov 1, 2012 at 9:36 PM

What a great explanation!! Makes perfect sense that the Celtics lost to the Heat b/c Chris Wilcox was injured.

Since your basketball knowledge is so insightful, please now explain to me how the Heat beat the Celtics in 5 games the year before….

Sometimes you just have to admit that the other team was just better. Miami deserved the championship last year; they were clearly the best team in the league. Boston was able to stop Lebron when his best 2 teammates were Verajao and Mo Williams, but it ain’t going to happen when Bosh and Wade are playing with him.

  16. doublezero74 - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:26 PM

Just google “dwyane wade dirty player”. Enjoy

  17. ez0682 - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:27 PM

I hope wade gets injured an never walks again. N all the banwagon heat fans.

    • bozosforall - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:53 PM

If that ever happens, I hope that something happens to take away your livelihood as well. Loser

    • southbeachtalent - Nov 2, 2012 at 9:21 AM

      ez,

      the epitome of human scum.

      • zeedoubleyou - Nov 2, 2012 at 3:46 PM

I have him one tier below Sandusky and Madoff in the scum pyramid so we’ll agree to disagree

  18. allen227 - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:51 PM

Just curious as to how many of you lifelong heat fans have ever stepped on a court to play. Wade is the biggest bitch in the league. He’s gonna pull that crap on the wrong guy and they will beat his a$$.

You can’t tell me the NBA had it set up for the heat last year and they were not going to let them lose out two years in a row. Hopefully now that they won the officials will call the games the right way.

    • miamatt - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:51 PM

So in his tenth year, he finally is gonna “do it to the wrong guy”? Even if such a man existed, he sure wouldn’t be wearing Celtics green. And keep crying about the “Heat title conspiracy”… just as long as you go ahead and taint every other title won by every other team right along with it. You would think a team that has won 17 titles would have a slightly less whiny fanbase, but actually just the opposite.

  19. rodge1 - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:57 PM

Haters are back, yay!!!! Great to see you again for another season of crying and excuses… Wade should have broken Rondo’s elbow again.

    • nycalldayz - Nov 1, 2012 at 7:00 PM

jUST like Rondo broke ya mamas back.

  20. nycalldayz - Nov 1, 2012 at 7:09 PM

Rondo did nothing wrong or unusual to Wade. It was a hard foul my only problem with the foul was it should of been done earlier instead of the last seconds of the game. It looked like a frustration play on Rondo’s end, but should anyone be surprise these teams don’t like each other. I think Wade crying about Rondo’s hard foul is comical, because he’s notorious himself for hard fouls.

I think Rondo should of taken out Wade’s legs personally. But Wade is too valuable to the organization with two banners and mostly fair-weather fans.

    • bozosforall - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:51 PM

Punk comment from a loser fan. Anyone who wishes injury on anyone is not a real fan.

      • rtfinch - Nov 2, 2012 at 8:36 AM

Where did he wish injury? He said the fould should’ve been harder. If Wade is going to cry, give him a reason to. Thats the way i was taught.

      • bozosforall - Nov 2, 2012 at 1:02 PM

        Same

      • southbeachtalent - Nov 2, 2012 at 9:13 AM

        @rtfinch,

“If Wade is going to cry, give him a reason to. Thats the way i was taught.”

        And you turned out great…

      • bozosforall - Nov 2, 2012 at 1:03 PM

He turned out to be a typical Boston crybaby loser.

      • bozosforall - Nov 2, 2012 at 1:01 PM

Taking out someone’s legs shows total disregard for that persons safety, which is the sne as wishing injury on them. Then again, you Boston fans have never had any problem with your teams being blatant cheaters.

      • rtfinch - Nov 2, 2012 at 1:17 PM

But you’re ok with a two handed shove when a player goes up for a layup? And actually I’m not a Boston fan at all, I’m a Wizards fan, I just hate the Heat thanks you to jock hoppers putting Lebron down as the “Greatest of all time”. Thanks southbeachtalent I appreciate that, it’s nice to be acknowleged.

      • bozosforall - Nov 3, 2012 at 5:53 PM

        Not OK at all

      • bozosforall - Nov 3, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Not OK with that either, but that doesn’t change the fact that Rondo is a whiny byatch

  21. nycalldayz - Nov 1, 2012 at 7:20 PM

Why is there a Jordan jersey hanging up in the Miami arena?? My god Miami is a complete joke. It’s bad enough the “Three-stooges”, James, Wade and Bosh are playing for the Heat and their fan base isn’t real, but hanging an MJ jersey? LOL LOL LOL

    • southbeachtalent - Nov 2, 2012 at 9:16 AM

It’s called respect, learn some you joker.

      Mama jokes… wow..

  22. bengzki - Nov 1, 2012 at 7:31 PM

This foul would not be an issue if the game is close and in a tight finish, but with 16 seconds left and the Celtics is down by double digits? What for?

That clearly states a frustration foul.

Hope Rondo grows more to be mature than this, that’s the only way he can be a true and effective leader for this team.

  23. buffalo65 - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:03 PM

    Go Raptors

  24. bozosforall - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:49 PM

Double punk move by Doc “wouldn’t have won schit without the Puh C’s not buying a title” Rivers…most overrated coach in the NBA.

    • andyhr17 - Nov 2, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Bought a title? They traded for two of the big Three. Heat signed their guys via free agency. That is more “buying a title” than the Celtics did. With that said, I have no problem with either scenario. The teams offer the money, the players take it. There is a salary cap in place (sort of) so teams that want to win spend the money to win.

      • bozosforall - Nov 2, 2012 at 1:05 PM

Try telling tht to your fellow crybaby Red Sox fans, who have Ben whining about the Yankees spending money for the last 40 years. Good luck with that.

      • andyhr17 - Nov 2, 2012 at 1:42 PM

Sorry, not a Red Sox fan. Never have been.

      • zeedoubleyou - Nov 2, 2012 at 3:51 PM

Bosh and LeBron were acquired via sign-and-trade if you really want to get technical about it.

Let’s talk about Kevin McHale trading Garnett back to his old team for the Jefferson, Green, Telfair, Szczerbiak Pu Pu Platter while we’re at it…

      • andyhr17 - Nov 2, 2012 at 4:52 PM

Yes, because it took a trade to get Lebron and Bosh to Miami. Give me a break. Teams do that once free agents decide to leave to get something instead of nothing. Garnett did not decide to leave Minnesota and sign with the Celtics. He was traded there.

    • bozosforall - Nov 3, 2012 at 5:50 PM

      Andyhr17 says:

Sorry, not a Red Sox fan. Never have been.

So you are a Celtics fan but not a Red Sox fan? Yet you criticize others who root for teams in different cities? Hypocrisy sure runs deep here.

  25. fruitcovejag - Nov 1, 2012 at 9:25 PM
