Pay the man. Without him I don’t think they could win a title but it looks to like he is going to be become a restricted free agent an I know Phoenix will make a huge push for him an I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he signed there he would be the number one option

First, the Thunder are still contenders without Harden. Durant and Westbrook are still getting better, as well as Ibaka.
Second, Harden is not a max player imo. I don’t see him carrying a franchise to anything special, and I think it would be a mistake for any team to give him max money unless they simply don’t care about the luxury tax implications.
Third, the Thunder ownership did NOT know what they were getting themselves into, as you say, because the new cap rules weren’t in place when they moved. Yes, they knew the media market was smaller, but they had no idea what the structure of the current CBA would look like.

If we don’t see an extension, I suspect they will flip him for something. Some team will offer max or close to max with poison pill to screw with the Thunder if luxury tax is what is holding them back.
