Knicks backup center Marcus Camby not near return

Last week, the Knicks said backup center Marcus Camby would be out a week to 10 days because of a strained calf.

But it’s going to go on longer than that. How much longer isn’t known, reports Marc Berman at the New York Post.

Camby, who has a calf strain, didn’t practice Tuesday and Knicks coach Mike Woodson admitted he isn’t sure if he will be back next week and make the Knicks upcoming three-game road trip to Montreal-Albany-Syracuse….

“I can’t say he’s getting close,’’ Woodson said. “He’s feeling better – put it that way. I’ll talk to (trainer) Roger (Hinds) and the training staff and see if there’s a chance of him coming back next week. I don’t know yet.’’

The Knicks other backup big man on the sidelines, Rasheed Wallace, still isn’t practicing with the team due to his conditioning after a couple years out of the league.

These are the risks the Knicks run having an older bench with five guys over the age of 35 — more injuries and ones that last longer.

Camby probably comes back by the time the season starts and the games actually matter. But Camby has had his injury issues four of the past five years (he did play 59 of the 66 last year, but not more than 59 of the 82 the four years prior) so this is something to watch, something that could be a trend.
