Josh isn’t going anywhere. If he was to go, he would request a trade right now. The reason why he want to wait is to get 5 years. The Hawks will give him that. They built the team around Smith, Teague and Horford. And Smith is loving the new stardom.

It’s not by coincidence that as soon as Joe Johnson left, Adidas started giving him cheddar. They’re making Smith the face of the Hawks.

even if traded, smith could still bolt that team in the summer! so, i guess j.smith has ultimate power.

this is definitely a flaw. now, seeing as how josh smith has apparently been asking for a trade for some time, smith is in the driver seat now. no extension mean a possible unrestricted free agency for him or they trade him to ensure if he decides to leave at least they get something for him or risk getting nothing and seeing him bolt. maybe things go well in negotiations and smith doesn’t like any other outside situation and stays in ATL. no one knows what will happen that affects smith’s decision making when the offseason comes, but the fact of the matter is, smith has the power now, leverage to be exact. the hawks still hold some power however. they could threaten to trade him to ramon session’s playing paradise, charlotte.

gm danny ferry has a lot of work in the coming months. sux, 10 players? that’s a lot.

Not news. Now if he’d said he WOULD sign an extension THAT would be news. And stupid of him.

And I don’t see this as a flaw in the CBA. It opens the door (albeit rather slightly) to allow another team a shot at a UFA, as well as addressing any charge that teams “own” players.

The problem with the NBA is that there seems to be buyer’s remorse on these contracts as soon as the ink dries.

Teams seem to sign these guys (to max deals in some cases) because they don’t want to lose an asset, not because they think these guys are worth the money.
