Kobe doesn’t get why Philly paid Kwame Brown so much

Oct 12, 2012, 1:03 PM EST

Kwame-Brown

This summer, desperate for a center and before they traded for Andrew Bynum, the Philadelphia 76ers reached a deal with Kwame Brown. He makes $2.8 million this year, $2.9 next season if Brown picks up his player option. Which he will. So Kwame Brown will pocket just shy of $6 million.

A lot of people from Philly shook their heads at that one (but not coach Doug Collins). And while Sixers fans don’t really accept Kobe as one of their own, he’s from the area and he doesn’t get it either.

When Kobe was smashing Smush Parker the other day, he fired at Kwame as well, reports the Los Angeles Times.

“I don’t know how he convinced Philadelphia to cough up $7 million a year,” said Bryant, slightly inflating Brown’s salary. “They want to lock us out, but they’ll pay him $7 million.”

So you don’t like the idea of the veteran Brown as Andrew Bynum’s mentor, just like in L.A.?

“You know what, he may have showed Andrew a couple of things though, especially on screen-and-roll coverages and one-on-one defense. Offensively? No way,” Bryant said. “Kwame, he’s a great defensive player. He’s one of the best defensive big men I’ve ever seen. But in terms of offense, he was challenged.”

Brown is a good one-on-one post defender, which makes him a great practice partner for Bynum. His rotations and his screen-and-roll coverages are not as good as Kobe seems to remember.

And “challenged” is a kind word for Brown’s offensive game. Then there are the mental aspects of the game, where Kobe compared Kwame to “Weekend at Bernie’s.”

Any other former Lakers Kobe wants to smack around now? Maybe some Chucky Atkins smack? Tierre Brown?

  1. glink123 - Oct 12, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Really? “He’s one of the best defensive big men I’ve ever seen”? Kwame Brown? I’ve got two words for that. Puh Lease.

    • Clayton Bigsby - Oct 12, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Ive got two words for Kwame…..Stone hands

  2. b7p19 - Oct 12, 2012 at 1:18 PM

“slightly inflating his salary” Um, he took it from $2.8 mil/year to $7 mil/year. I would call that a complete fabrication.

And if Kobe thinks $2.8 mil/year for the best defensive center he’s ever seen is a bad deal something is seriously wrong with him and he should be MJ’s GM when he retires.

  3. paulhargis53 - Oct 12, 2012 at 1:21 PM

That’s ok. Millions of us are wondering why he paid off a woman in Colorado if he was so innocent….

Worry about the breaking down bodies on your own roster. It’s funny, he only engages in taunts at people that are lesser players than he is.
What a turd Kobe is,just garbage on a moral scale.

    • paleihe - Oct 12, 2012 at 2:34 PM

It’s slim pickings trying to find players that are better than him.

And why are you still wondering about consensual sex between two adults?

      • badintent - Oct 12, 2012 at 10:34 PM

It’s slim picking trying to find any one lower on the scale of slim balls than Kobe When is not demanding a trade to Chicago after lsoing in first round, blasting an MVP team mate( Shaq) or stabbing coaches in the back, he is involve with family mattters, i.e.,…
One does not spend $ 5 million on a piece of compressed coal for his wife if he is truly innocent of consensual sex( which is was not from the choke marks on her neck ). And as for the 100+ women he ex-wife accuses of sleeping with,I’m sure his lawyers are spinning the rap records on the hoes in question. And his last Nike commercial was so bad, all of us are still laughing.

  4. juanandonly24 - Oct 12, 2012 at 1:22 PM

Ironic because Kwame’s deal is pretty fair, but Kobe’s isn’t.

  5. whordy - Oct 12, 2012 at 1:25 PM

    This is the NBA.
2yr/6mil for a competent back up big is a steal.

    • 00maltliquor - Oct 12, 2012 at 7:04 PM

Thing is Kwame is by no means competent. That’s one of the worst professional basketball players I’ve ever seen in my life.

      • sellahh - Oct 13, 2012 at 8:02 AM

Cept for the part where you’ve actually seen him.

  6. illcomm - Oct 12, 2012 at 1:33 PM

kobe gets 30 mil a year and he calls kwayme overpaid. he is vastly overpaid compared to peanuts that kwayme makes. kwayme is just more a body for practice and 10-15 minutes of hard d against bugs to tire em down for bynum

    • money2long - Oct 12, 2012 at 1:53 PM

the lakers are not paying kobe so much for only what he does on the court. he is a cash cow for the lakers organization. i bet there are fans in different countries losing sleep to catch a lakers game he’s playing in.

      • therealhtj - Oct 12, 2012 at 2:37 PM

Fair enough, but in a salary cap league, you simply can’t pay a guy roughly half the cap this year and likely more than half the cap next year as he gets older and is in obvious decline. It’s two years in a row now the guy has injured himself trying to dunk on someone to show everyone “he’s still got it.” His contract, no matter how you slice it, is an absolute travesty. No one cares how much money he brings in if next year they have to dump $20-30mil in salary just to get under the new supertax.

Now all this nonsense trash talk about journeymen players that should have been long forgotten are leaving a lot of Lakers fans shaking their collective heads. What Kobe really needs to do, but likely will not, is put his head down, keep his eyes on the prize, STFU, and really let this be Dwight Howard’s team now. It’s the only way he gets that 6th ring.

      • cosanostra71 - Oct 12, 2012 at 4:07 PM

htj… Kobe makes more back for the Lakers than $30 million. He’s worth it. Especially when you consider the Lakers’ new TV deal pretty much pays the whole payroll by itself.

      • therealhtj - Oct 12, 2012 at 4:50 PM

First of all, is their any hard figure whatsoever that backs up your claims? I’m not denying in a strict cost/benefit analysis, the salary may be warranted, but other than Kobe apologists, no one cares about the other revenues he brings in. The difference is 2nd round losses vs. championships. Kobe could make the team the entire 3 billion of the Time Warner deal, it doesn’t increase the salary cap and won’t give the Lakers more flexibility to make moves as he continues to slow down.

From a strict business perspective it may make sense to pay him 1/2 the cap, but from a winning basketball perspective, it’s tragic. Kobe showed what his real 1st priority was when he signed that nightmarish extension.

      • money2long - Oct 12, 2012 at 5:48 PM

did kobe get his contract before the salary cap changes of the lockout? i think he did.

    • money2long - Oct 12, 2012 at 1:55 PM

meanwhile, the sixers are only paying brown for what he brings to the court or in practice. no one is buying tickets to see kwame. who bought his jersey last seaosn? nuff said.

    • paleihe - Oct 12, 2012 at 2:35 PM

Kobe is probably underpaid for the value he provides the Lakers, and the league as a whole. Arenas sell out because the Lakers come to town. And he’s the main reason why.

      • money2long - Oct 12, 2012 at 5:49 PM

thank you. people are just focusing on his age and the salary cap. meanwhile, forgetting the entire spectrum of the business.

      • 00maltliquor - Oct 12, 2012 at 7:15 PM

        paleihe & ‘2long…

        Bingo. On the nose.

  7. kinggw - Oct 12, 2012 at 2:04 PM

Kobe just needs to shut the hell up and play ball. Im getting really tired of his commentary. Worry about your overrated, over the hill gang and be quiet. What Kobe is doing is a punk move. He didn’t criticize these players with the vitriol he is now when they he were his teammates, so why start now when they are long gone?

    • money2long - Oct 12, 2012 at 2:18 PM

because they are long gone. it’d be more of a controversy if they were still in his locker room.

  8. minnesota32 - Oct 12, 2012 at 2:14 PM

Why is Kobe so worried about everybody else? Is this high school? Does he have nothing more important to talk about? Even if he’s just answering a reporters question, why does he feel the need to bash people over and over? Rings don’t put you above anybody in life Kobe. Have some respect.

    • money2long - Oct 12, 2012 at 2:21 PM

well the ironic thing is, he isn’t talking about life. he is talking about what they brought to the court. and he won his rings on the court. so im not entirely sure your argument here has legs. i see where you’re going though. kobe attacked their ball skills, not their parenting skills or their morals/beliefs. so i don’t know how you’re complaining kobe’s rings make him above anyone in life. maybe in basketball.

      • minnesota32 - Oct 12, 2012 at 2:32 PM

It’s not about what you say, it’s about how you say it. He comes off as very condescending and I don’t think that can be debated. He feels that because he has had so much success on the court, he can talk about anybody any type of way as long as they haven’t had equal success.

      • raidmagic - Oct 12, 2012 at 3:38 PM

It’s nice to have Kobe’s publisist on the site.

      • money2long - Oct 12, 2012 at 5:58 PM

        minnesota32,

ok yes, i do think it’s bad what he’s saying in public, because as a man, i would hate for another man to be talking about me. and it sucks when you aren’t an all star, your opinion becomes less. kobe has the upper hand. but ask yourself, are the things kobe saying really not true? were you saying the same things about these players in blogs, comments, to friends, as fans, while watching the games? i think most would say they have said the same exact things kobe is saying. the only problem is, kobe is in a position where his words are seen and heard and magnified. he has the platform. most would want for kobe to use that spotlight to shed good 100% of the time. but those are the same people who hate when athletes give fake, generic, politically correct responses. kobe’s giving you what you want, honesty. but i agree, it comes off the wrong way because it’s cruel. yet, true.

  9. blakspartan - Oct 12, 2012 at 2:59 PM

Kobe Bryant attacked their basketball skills, not their character, and I agree with your comment Minnesota, because if Kobe would have said that about Michael Jordan, that would have been an insult to Jordan,

  10. illcomm - Oct 12, 2012 at 3:12 PM

therealhdt elaborated greatly on what I really meant. kobe is not worth 30 of salarycap.

  11. rajbais - Oct 12, 2012 at 3:15 PM

    Where are you Stephen A.???

  12. dls612 - Oct 12, 2012 at 4:15 PM

Shaq and others did warned us about Kobe! Nash & D12 betta start sucking up or else!

  13. lakerluver - Oct 12, 2012 at 4:30 PM

THE BLACK MAMBA: UNCENSORED!! I have no problem with what he said about Kwame or Smush. Kobe’s one of the very few athletes who does not give the “PC” answer. Smush is a scrub and is playing in China, rather than the NBA, for a reason. And Kwame’s contract has one zero too many. Instead of 6 million he should be paid $600, 000. Yeah, Kobe’s paid a lot of money too. However, he earns every cent of it and the LAKERS make more money off him than what they pay him. I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a LAKERS K. Brown jersey!!

    • dls612 - Oct 12, 2012 at 5:35 PM

      2013/2014 season! The count down!

  14. progress2011 - Oct 12, 2012 at 5:35 PM

Fakers talking all that SMACK, trying to stay relevant and in the news. That may sell jerseys and keep them the highest market, but it WONT win games.

They should be attempting to figure out, how much icy-hot, bengay and tape, is it gonna take to :

    1. Defend opponents backcourts. Who is gonna check Westbrook, CP3, Parker or Ty Lawson

    2. When the geriatric crew needs a rest, who is coming off the bench. The bench is a bunch of dudes from the rec. league at the YMCA

    3. Since they have a BUNCH of injured old players at the beginning of the season, how can they possibly compete with OKC, San Antonio or the Clippers in a series.

I think they know, they have ZERO chance of getting past the 2nd round (maybe the first) so, they are in the news EVERYDAY saying stupid stuff to make their profit margin, cause their will be NO rings!

Lace ‘em up, lets get this show on the road. Put up or shut up.

    • money2long - Oct 12, 2012 at 6:04 PM

those guards you named are good because everrryyyyone has trouble stopping them. singling out the lakers makes little sense, because everyone is in the same boat. why don’t people get that? let’s see if those guys can stop kobe though. why not look at it like that? nash will still get dimes. can westbrook stop nash from getting his dimes? but yea, it’s okay to look at the deficiencies on defense for the lakers when tying to prove a point.

      • progress2011 - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:49 PM

        Pennies2numerous….

Your question “lets see if those guys can stop kobe” …..dude is “Self Checked” !

He shot 42%, shot several hundred more shots that the scoring champ Durant, and still was not close to winning the scoring title.

I hope he attempts to do his “Harlem Globe Trotter / One against 5 / Curly Neal / And1 act. That will ensure they lose in the first round !

Dude can’t even make an uncontested dunk, without straining his shoulder !

Faker nation will increase their market status and money because of all the “HYPE” ….but understand….that old starting 5 and YMCA league bench will be thoroughly

        SPANKED !!!

  15. pop562 - Oct 12, 2012 at 7:31 PM

So it’s ok for Smush Parker to talk smack about Kobe but he can’t defend himself, I guess you guys like it when people walk all over you and just let them do as they please. Both Smush and Brown was and still is garbage…if any one of these clowns was on your favorite team you would be talking smack about them too, stop acting like you guys are angels with high morals.

  16. lakerluver - Oct 12, 2012 at 7:53 PM

To paraphrase what Kobe said awhile back…I’m surrounded by idiots!! Why do some of you bring up Kobe ‘s salary? I don’t think the Buss family would’ve given him that money if they didn’t think he was worth every dime of it!! The LAKERS don’t win a title…just about every 3 years…by being dumb!!! As for Kobe’s deal stopping the LAKERS from signing players; wtf is Nash, D12, Jamison and Meeks, holograms??!!!!

  17. blakspartan - Oct 12, 2012 at 8:03 PM

Why is kwame brown still in the league, hell might as well bríng back Greg Ogden

  18. tcclark - Oct 12, 2012 at 8:22 PM

Kwame really is a good defensive player. he is not as good on the help side, but guarding a player one-on-one there aren’t many better than him. Kobe is seriously confused though on those numbers. Kwame made $7 million a year LAST year for Golden State. They signed him to a one year deal worth 7 million, so considering what he’s making the next two years, the Sixers got a steal. Even if all he does is practice against Bynum everyday, he’s worth the money

  19. paulhargis53 - Oct 12, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Those signings are all well and good this year lakerswallower. It’s what I told you from day one though and you won’t get through your thick skull, the taxes and penalties, not to mention losing exemptions for being a repeat violater is what is going to gut this team.

Your refusal to believe it now is what’s going to make it sweeter when it happens.

The lakers(see what I did there) have this year to do it, next year the pieces start falling away. Here’s a hint, they aren’t doing it this year.
You’re in for a long season buttplug. I see you’re building a cadre of people that detest you. How does that feel to be loathed by so many people? Something tells me you are loathed offline too.

  20. lakerluver - Oct 12, 2012 at 8:46 PM

Dude, you don’t have a clue!! The LAKERS will gladly pay those taxes if it means winning titles! Let me ask you just one simple question: after Kobe/Nash/Jamison/Pau/Artest come off the books what do you think the LAKERS are going to do? According to you they’re just gonna close shop and stop trying to win titles!! What don’t you phukin understand?! I’ve told you what they’re going to do. They’re going to go after the best free agent (or 2) on the market to go along with Dwight. Teams that want to win a title have no other choice but to pay the tax penalties, you idiot!! Why do you think the Thunder are seriously considering signing Harden to a max deal?! Surely if OKC can have four max or near max players, the LAKERS can AND will. You need to stop thinking with your emotions and use freakin common sense for once. You’re the same clown that said the LAKERS wouldn’t get Howard! You’ve proven you know nothing. Your whole agenda is to bash the LAKERS but in doing so you look like a fool.

    • 00maltliquor - Oct 13, 2012 at 11:29 AM

      PREACH!

      Amen brother lakerluver

  21. lakerluver - Oct 12, 2012 at 9:05 PM

And what’s up with all the “that’s why nobody likes you on here, LAKERLUVER”? Dude, are you like 12?!! Why is it so important for you to be liked by a bunch of strangers? Probably because you have no real friends. Why do you so pitifully beg for attention on here? Between the homophobic slurs and begging for friends from people you’ll probably never meet you are one sad dude.

  22. paulhargis53 - Oct 12, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Listen Sausage wallet, what you AREN’T getting is that those players are not coming off the books for 2 years.

It’s not just the $ penalties you dumb sob.
They lose exemptions. Yep, they can add 2 max players, and have nobody to surround them with. You refuse to understand the changes coming, you are an idiot. You are going to be sitting there with your thumb in your ass, going what happened?

Nice try on your little turn around ploy. Everyone on here that’s seen me post, knows I don’t give a fat f*** what anyone thinks of me. If I wanted to be popular, I wouldn’t be as antagonistic as I am.

I merely congratulated a fellow poster on a good post.
You on the other hand have irritated the piss out of enough people that they detest you to your core.
You’re a 38 year old man worshipping sports players. You just love, love, love you some large sweaty black men.
    You’re a pathetic POS .
You go on and try to make yourself look better, everyone know you for what you are. Just remember tool box, you can’t embarrass me, I don’t give 2 shits what people think of me on here. You do, otherwise you’d quit trying to defend yourself to me and ignore me.

I’ve told you what I am up to over and over again, yet you keep coming back in a pathetic attempt to “win’.
There is no winning, you’re just going to continue too look stupid and in the process, gain more people that can’t stand you. Good job you prolapsed a**hole.

  23. sasquash20 - Oct 12, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Preach on Padre! I hate the Lakers (as I’m a sad Sixers fan with some hope finally) but the Lakers are always going for it. As a fan you want your team to go for it every time. And I agree that dude is a closet tinkerbell who needs a life. As for Kobe he has earned the right to talk about any player in the league. There isn’t one player who is playing today, who you would take over Kobe if they were both in the prime of there careers. The guy is one of the best SG of all-time, top 15 all-time player.

  24. paulhargis53 - Oct 12, 2012 at 10:53 PM

Closet tinkerbell, that’s a good one, I like it!
See lackerswallower? He’s done in 1 post what you’ve failed to do thousands. Make a point and throw in an insult and be funny about it.
As for the rest of your seek, I replied, but evidently was censored.
    So basically ill just say:
I’m not going to rehash our 1st argument.
You don’t understand the new collective bargaining agreement and its ramifications. It’s not just about the $ and the tax bill, its the loss of exceptions, but you’ll find that out soon enough.
Nice regurgitation of everything I’ve said to you today by the way. It’s so transparent. You don’t have on ounce of originality in your body, not one idea of your own.
It’s gotten to the point of pity. I pity you. You just don’t get that if you’d ignore me, I’d go away. But you somehow think that this is “winnable”. There is no winning!!

Ignore me dummy. You just can’t do it, you’re too weakmined. This is a game to me you ignorant pos. How can you not get that?! I have to see this to its conclusion, just to see how long you will go. I’m utterly amazed that you have kept taking the bait for MONTHS.
I anxiously await your next inane missive.

    Good night sausage wallet.

      AHAHAHAHA PAUL !!!!!

I have been practicing my psychology 101 on these simple-minded, obsessed, half-baked, obtuse, numskulled Faker fans for years.

Its PURE comical entertainment for me, when I travel and am delayed on one of my connecting flights or trains.

I can always gain comic relief and exercise my control over others and their mental aptitude. Case and Point:

kobe should be BENCHED ! The scrub shot only 42% from the field last year. Many reserve players shoot a better percentage than that (ex: Jason Terry).

Dude has played twice as long as King James and has fewer MVP’s. That proves, he’s not very valuable in the eyes of the masses.

He is BARELY in the top 15 of all time…..this clown can NEVER be compared to the Greatest to ever lace ‘em up…….M.J.

      Wait for it ?
