As a Laker fan, I never assumed that banner 17 is as good as done and to be hanged in the rafters. But I like the team’s chances of getting it done.

If your team had these players, wouldn’t you be excited too? I guess you wouldn’t say yes since it’s obvious that you’re a hater.

But your points are valid as health and injuries are great concerns for the primary players. Howard at 27 is the youngest and the only 20-something in the starting five.

True that, Paul. But back then when I was just some Clearasil kid with not much access to watching a lot of NBA games as I have now (and if I did get to watch, it had to be a Laker game) and my perception of the Celtics was basically this five and the “others.”

But yeah, you’re right. Especially that Celtics ’83-’84 Championship team which held off a Lakers team that aimed to get rid of that leprechaun magic in a Game 7 Finals match.

I guess what stuck more in my head was the season of that ’85-’86 Celtics Championship team. That year could have been another classic Lakers-Celtics battle… but Ralph Sampson’s Hail Mary follow up happened.

Foul. Those teams also had Cedric Maxwell, Gerald Henderson,
Scott Wedman and Tiny Archibald among other very good role
role players like M.L. Carr, Quinn Buckner etc. It wasn’t just
the starting 5 plus a few others.

That pain in the back Howard suffered was from being sick and tired of that pathetic Orlando Tragic management team who would never put a real team around him. Howard and LBJ both go after it, Howard cuts a whopper (he had chili for dinner) LBJ falls down waving his hands in front of his nose, Howard gets the rebound throws it down to Kobe who throws a desperation jumper just in time, it hits.

Lakers win!!

Only under THOSE circumstances will I ever – a Celtics fan – EVER be happy to see the Lakers win it all.

Hmmm… I do remember that back in the mid 80′s, the winning Celtics would almost always have these five players on the court most of the time: Parish, McHale, Bird, Johnson, and Ainge. though I remember Bill Walton and Jerry Sichting pitching in as relievers.

To answer your question, a solid 5 gives a tremendous edge. It’s a question of how durable they are for the long haul of the season.

I’m quite looking forward to D12 taking the floor. Don’t care for the Lakers but I will say it will be fun to see.

My question is which one of the Laker faithfuls think 5 is all you need to make a championship? Plus, don’t think Perkins, gortat, Jordan, or any other player won’t test that back with Metta World Peace on Hardin style elbow to the back just to test it out for good measure won’t happen early on.

Better hope and pray it all is golden this year as next year and beyond looks pretty bleak. But hey, keep on believing that’s what you all do best. Cheers.

He looked good in the videos of him practicing at the LAKERS’ facility, but just make sure to take it easy and come back at full strength. Better to miss time at the beginning of the year to get healthy than to miss time at the end.
