Report: Camby was surprised Knicks gave him 3-year deal

It’s usually a basic NBA law — 38-year-old players don’t get three-year contracts. By NBA terms, 38 is the age where you eat dinner at 5 p.m. and watch a lot of “In The Heat of the Night” reruns on television. It’s old.

But a couple guys got them this year — Steve Nash with the Lakers and Marcus Camby with the Knicks.

And Camby was surprised, according to the New York Daily News (via SLAM).

Perhaps because of his history of injuries and long career, Camby privately told teammates when he arrived for training camp that he was surprised he received a three-year deal worth $13.1 million.

The reason for the three year deal is the Knicks didn’t have a choice — all sign-and-trades must be at least three years under the new CBA. Still, this wasn’t a crazy risk. The last year of that contract is not fully guaranteed (he can be waived after second year for a $1 million buyout).

The gamble with Camby is a good one if he can stay healthy. When he plays Camby is a good defensive presence in the paint plus he can knock down midrange jumpers consistently. He has real value. But he has a history of injuries and he is already out for at least the Knicks first couple of preseason games. It’s too early to read much into that, but it’s something to watch.
