Friday Night Video: Grizzlies owner Penny Hardaway could flat-out ball

Oct 5, 2012, 10:45 PM EDT

In case you missed the news, Memphis native Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway is about to become a minority owner of the Grizzlies (along with Peyton Manning and Justin Timberlake).

Consider this a reminder that there was a time when the four-time All-Star and Shaq partner in Orlando could just flat out ball.

Where’s Lil Penny these days? Will he be working the concessions stands at Grizzlies games?

Man yeah he could throw down. Hate that the injuries shortened what could have been a hall of fame career.

A little history for the young folk….This guy used to play like that, in High School…..50-70 pts A NIGHT!

The other Memphis native Todd Day, used to ball in High School too. Every week, it was Todd and Penny, on the front page of the Memphis newspaper. I’m sure people living in Memphis, had a All Star game every night, at a High School game !

Penny’s skill transcended to the pro level, whereas many history buffs saw Todd essentially become a jump shooter, in the pro’s.

What I love most about the highlight reel, it shows a guy with a plethora of FUNDAMENTAL skill !!! Conversely, many guards in the league now, barely learned to dribble with their left hand.

There are certain players that we got to enjoy just a few years of their potential, but injuries got in the way.

Penny, Grant Hill, and Yao are the main ones that come to mind where injuries took a toll on their bodies and prevented them from reaching their full potential. These three could have been in the conversation for all time greats had it not been for injuries.

Thanks for the reminder of brighter days for us Magic fans, back when it was the O-rena and we had an honest to God point guard that could do everything. Man that #1 jersey really needs to be hanging in the rafters, no excuse for it not to be.

you got that backwards. mcgrady looks like penny.

McGrady had some moves and I enjoyed watching the young McGrady play, as well as his cousin Vince.
But Penny was an entirely different type of player, with a much more solid foundation as a Point Guard/ Play Maker with unlimited scoring ability.

TMac and Vince were more scorers, that could get their own shot but not necessarily focus on or consistently help others to get their shot.

Re-watch the reel and observe Penny’s ability to make others better….that’s the difference in your comparison.
