Agreed. Howard is perfect for the Lakers defensively, but hasn't he previously voiced dissatisfaction about the expectations placed on him defensively. I remember Dwight saying he'd like to be as involved offensively?

I see three possibilities for this roster failing to win a championship: Injury, Dwight pouting and causing internal strife due to his inglorious role as defensive cleanup guy, and most of all Kobe/Nash struggling to be effective without the ball. One of them has to give it up and find a way to be effective.

u really called him a scumbag. like, that's actually ludicrous to me. i bet if you ask the guys who are around dwight on a regular basis would say that about his character. he handled his business part in life wrong, jerking the magic around with loyalty and being wishy washy, but hey, you can't describe howard the man, the human being as a scumbag. that shows you are not watching the same person i am. sure he coulda handled free agency better, but don't tell me the guy with a million dollar smile is a scumbag. how do you describe bin laden if dwight's a scumbag? satan?

ok , i hear you, but consider this in an unbiased manner.

think about how many years dwight has been in the NBA
his free agency circus lasted for how long? was it even up to 2 full years? i don't think so.

so, are you really going to say i'm wrong about how i described dwight because of how he handled his impending free agency? those months in his life represent who he truly is? that's not fair to say.

Howard is his generations Mutombo. Great defende, with little offensive game, that still put up numbers on bad teams, but couldn't do much on good teams (when the ball didn't go through him anyway)

you can see Howard on his jersey, but I think he's Deke's kid. I want a DNA test, where's Maury?

i think "stayhigh_247" had it right in his comment. shaq is frontin to prove a point.

using the lopez brothers, where one has been rotating from bench player to starter and traded for a non all star, and another as you point out who struggles to get 7 rebounds a game, is a way to just support his points. but if you are a smart basketball fan it's hard not to see that shaq just sounds upset, threatened or jealous that another center was getting so much love. think about it, shaq was the playful, somewhat loveable people-person center who was great... and dwight was approaching that plateau...infectious smile (pause), was a multiple all star, he had the look of a center that a franchise could build a foundation with. dwight was the funny guy, we just heard stories of him farting up storms in the locker room. it's hard for shaq to see that and not feel that dwight was stealing his thunder.

sorry to bring this up, but it sorta feels like the whole lil kim-nicki minaj beef, where shaq is the guy fading to black (lil kim) and dwight is the guy coming up (nicki), getting all the new love and is somewhat of the same character (aside from basketball talent). then the superman nickname came and shaq had it. he started saying dwight is copying him, saying he wants to be in his shoes and go to LA. in my opinion shaq was doing all that that to make dwight not want to go to LA because shaq knows what a personality like dwight's can become in that city and he wanted to nip that in the butt quickly.

AH. i commented too much about this beef today. good comment by dwight btw.. very professional response he provided.

dump it in to dwight for the easy points and to get guys in foul trouble. dwight will not be the 4th option every night. there are teams that can't defend dwight and im pretty sure the lakers and nash will exploit that heavily, in effect making dwight the 1st option. i hope people do not forget he is a franchise player for whatever team he plays for. franchise players who play on the same team as other franchise players i feel can have interchangeable nights where they are the go-to guys.

also, this is just a hunch, but im not sure nash is even thinking about scoring. he is a deadly shooter from anywhere, free throw line, the field and from 3, so he will take advantage when guys collapse. and don't forget, kobe has played with pau for some years now, and i think he has a good handle on knowing when pau is playing disinterested or when he doesn't want the ball. you can bet kobe will be feeding dwight on those nights too.

the crazy thing is shaq used the name superman to describe his physique, power and the way he was the man on his team.
dwight got the name superman because of his leaping ability, in the dunk contest. two completely different usages, and i even think dwight was given that name. i could be wrong, but shaq named himself superman, and dwight got the nickname from kenny smith. and i like that dwight earned it at least, because of his hops and the cape. he actually played the part! it was a prop thing, but still, it wasn't like dwight went out seeking to steal the name.

this whole feuding thing is petty but more so on shaq's part. i can't believe this is still ongoing.

I don't get it... Oh wait, I do. Hakeem has players coming to him for mentoring while no one asks Shaq for advice because he had 3 moves. I know his job is to be an analyst, but even before then he rarely had anything good to say about any of the young bigs. Truth be told Shaq benefited from being able to bowl over opponent. Once the NBA changed its rules pertaining to charging his game took a nosedive.. Instead of evolving his game deterioratedand he spent his last 4 seasons of his career on a hate tour.
Come on dude, Pat Ewing not a great center? You ask hoop heads about centers and Dwight Howard wont get mentioned until somebody has to say, "what about current centers".Ewing was a beast at Gtown and locked down the middle at the Garden. He faced so many great big men during his career. Howards competition during his era is Bynum, thats it.

David Robinson might not have won any rings until Duncan arrived, but Duncan credits David for helping him become a great player. Robinson is another all time great in the conversation before Howard.

Shaq took the Magic to the finals vs the Dream. Shaq was the center piece of those Lakers teams. Kobe was a major component but without Shaq, zero rings for Kobe at that time. Shaq added another great young 2 to win the ring without Kobe. You need superstars to win rings, you need a team, no one guy wins rings unless your name is Jordan.

Dwight Howard has an opportunity to be in the conversation, but he has alot to prove.

I agree, but I don't think he'll get 18+ PPG, more like 15-17 PPG, Pau has more importance offensively. Howard should be the 3rd or 4th option offensively.

Dwight averaged 20.6 PPG last season. And another bad thing about Howard is that he folds in the 4th quarter. Statistically, he was the 3rd best closer on that Orlando Magic team. He is one of the better defenders in the last 25 years, but he can't seal the deal, nor plays with a chip on his shoulder.

Whatever. Ewing was a very good but not truly great center. The admiral couldn't make it to a final until arguably the greatest power forward ever (Tim Duncan) joined the Spurs. Shaq didn't start winning championships until he teamed up with one of the best shooting guard ever.

D12 has already lead a team to the finals with no other dominant player. He's right there at the big boys table and now that he's playing with other all nba players he should be ok.

Howard is not merely a good center. He's a Franchise center who is as dominate on the defensive end as almost any big man in the past 30 years. Shaq was a more dominate odfensive force but Howard is a more dominant defender and rebounder. Howard averaged 22 points 14+ rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game the past two seasons. If that's merely good then I'm not sure what dominant is. He's also lead a team to the NBA finals as the hands down best player. Criticize him for being wishy washy. A whiner. Whatever. But not acknowledging his dominance when your eyes and his stats confirm it is kind of small.

while we all want or bigs to have the skills of hakeem the dream, or our wing players to have the skills of mj, let's be real.

if you were to put the offensive numbers of brook lopez, bynum and dwight side by side, you can't tell me just from looking at the offensive stats alone, that you can point out who the offensively deficient player is. the fact of the matter is, dwight gets it done. in fact, the premise of dwight having limited skills in the post, and STILL being able to get 20 points a night and earning the title 'best cnter in the game' speaks volumes to his will to get it done. he came into this game as a high schooler and quickly ascended and even carried the magic to the finals with no other all stars to take his shine away. he was an anchor. please, i would only have a problem with dwight if he couldn't find ways to dunk the ball. he finds ways to score and i'm fine with that.
