Bynum sidelined three weeks with bone bruise in knee

Andrew Bynum just got back from Germany, where he had the Orthokine therapy — you know it better as the Kobe treatment — on his knee. Something he has had done before, and last season he played a full season on those troublesome knees.

This time the procedure left him with a small bone bruise, so the Sixers have decided to play it safe and sit Bynum for the first three weeks of training camp, the team announced on Monday as they came in for media day. From the Sixers:

Bynum was examined by Dr. Jack McPhilemy of Main Line Health and was diagnosed with a bone bruise of the medial femoral chondyle of his right knee. During the aforementioned time frame, Bynum will continue participate in low impact conditioning drills.

The three week timeline means Bynum would play in at least on preseason game (their final one is against the Knicks Oct. 22), and he would certainly be ready for the Oct. 31 season opener against the Denver Nuggets (with Andre Iguodala).

This is the smart play for Philly — Bynum is your franchise guy, you don’t push him to play in meaningless preseason games when you need him for the long haul. Be cautious, you don’t want something that lingers or becomes chronic.

To provide some depth for training camp, the Sixers also signed veteran center Mikki Moore.
