Juwan Howard still hoping to land with Heat. Good luck.

Juwan Howard AP

When the Miami Heat gave a contract to Josh Harrellson, it was assumed by many that would be it for veteran Juwan Howard. The Heat are going to start Chris Bosh at center (or at least play him there a lot this season) and now they have Joel Anthony, Mickell Gladness and Harrellson on the roster to. Plus Dexter Pittman is under contract. We should never forget Dexter Pittman. Not all of them are going to make the cut.

But Howard is not ready to walk away and work on his rap career, he is still working out in Miami and hoping for another shot, another ring, reports Barry Jackson at the Miami Herald.

The reality in Miami is that Anthony is a lock and Pittman likely makes the roster because he has a guaranteed deal for this season. That means only one of Harrellson and Gladness will make the Heat’s final roster (my money is on Harrellson). There really is almost no way, baring a rash of injuries or the discovery of the Fountain of Youth, that Howard is going to make the team.

But it’s not easy to just walk away. So Howard is still there, trying.

Gotta love this guy. True pro. I hope if the Heat cut him, they offer him a coaching position instead. The guy is a basketball lifer and would be a great addition to any coaching staff around the league.

I would say the smart money is on him joining the Heat’s coaching staff. Wade and LBJ love having him around, and Miami has always had a proclivity to transition ex-players into the coaching ranks (see Keith Askins).

I imagine he would step into the role that Spoelstra had when Wade was a rookie- 1:1 drills and workouts with developing players.

I can’t believe organizations are still wasting money on this clown. He’s been one of the biggest jokes for years.

Harrellson is The White Kurt Thomas with more range on his J.

you’re allowed to compare players of different races without denoting that he’s the “white” version of him. You can just say he’s like Kurt Thomas with more range.

Sorry, but that’s a pet peeve of mine.

Give it up big guy, it was a good, long run. Got a championship at the very end, end it on that note and walk off into the sunset.

He gave the Heat some good minutes at power forward in the Indiana series this year, but the Heat need frontcourt players who could contribute against title contenders.

I think Harrelson makes it because of his combination of size and skill on offense, and then it becomes a battle between Gladness and Pittman. If Pittman clearly lags behind Gladness, I think Riley would buy out Pittman and sign Gladness.

The guaranteed contract for minimum salary isn’t something Riley fears throwing away – Eddie House was cut despite having a guaranteed deal last year.

What a dirty trick to have the headline say “Howard” instead of total nobody “Juwan Howard” on the main NBA page. Sorry but Juwan Howard is not newsworthy, he hasn’t done anything in too many years and should have retired. Go Lakers!

Isn’t he collecting Social Security already?
