Best believe this guy will be ready to go this year. I expect him to pull off another monster season cause he’s hungry again.
Also, give the guy a break, he chased that ring for thirteen years so damn straight he’s gonna celebrate and maybe let it slip a little bit. Not every man on this planet can be as insanely-determined as Jordan and such. Dirk worked so hard for that ring, he got it so he kinda lost focus, but i’m confident that he’s gonna play big again this year

the players were being told even before the lockout season to save their money and be prepared to miss a season. they were told this. i can understand how some feel the lockout wouldn’t have lasted, but the players were informed by execs and the union that a year of no basketball was a strong possibility. but i am with you in that they should have stayed in shape, only because a lockout is not permanent and they should always be prepared. but you have to consider what they were told many times throughout that season to actually prepare for, and it was a year of no basketball.

Dirk last year was pretty much like Dirk every other year save for 2011 when he had a run for the ages. Not sure why Mavs fans and “experts” expected the 2011 Dirk every year going forward, especially with him not getting any younger, Cuban letting the key free agents walk, and him having the “Championship Hangover.”

Sellah, nice pivot but no dice. Being in shape isn’t doing his job it’s a condition for completing his job, kinda like knowing excel is for a financial analyst. Kurt lets Dirk off the by calling it “all screwed up”. It wasn’t. It was non existent. He also makes the mistake of using the word “understandably”, again it isn’t.

I played college hoops. Coach always told us to come back in Sep in “camp shape” and he’d take care of the rest (editorial: as most athletes know there is a HUGE gulf b/t camp shape and being in game shape.). For us camp shape was no more than ~10lbs over your end of season weight and to be able to approach your tested mile time on Day 1 (~45 seconds) which is a bout 350M on a track for your average hoopster over a mile.

I realize I’ll take flak for “not playing in the nba” but coming to camp in “camp shape” if you’re a pro athlete is REALLY NOT THAT HARD (unless you’re naturally fat and lazy, which Dirk is neither).

twreck is right. I’m from Dallas, he’s cemented his legacy here. I’ll never say a bad thing about him. He won a title when no one thought Mavs had a chance in hell. We were dogs to the 6 seed Blazers in the 1st round, and continued being dogs for most of those playoffs. He can have some awful years and I’ll be alright with it.

I think its more annoying that its “understandable” that he let himself get out of shape after winning a championship. If anything, it should make you more motivated to come out and get another one.

100% Agreed.

Their job is to be in shape. Towards the end of the lockout, when it became clear a deal was being made as both sides contemplated the lost revenue of a lost season, even guys who took all summer off should have begun training.

I like Dirk, to me he’s a first ballot Hall of Famer, but to be blunt, he’s earned enough money to hire trainers and buy the equipment necessary to maintain his usual routines, so it’s on him (not the lockout) for staying in shape.

…So if Dirk spends the next 3 years playing terribly while being the highest paid player on the Mavericks and team leader, that wouldn’t affect your opinion of him at all? Since he’s their best player, him playing that poorly means a TON of losses.

How is that a good thing? How can you as a fan not care if your team loses a ton of games?

dirk can shoot 30 percent from the field and average 10 points a game the rest of his career and I will not care or ever think less of him.

Why does everyone use the lockout as an excuse for not being in shape? Common sense told you the lockout would end at some point, maybe you should be ready? Act like there wasn’t a lockout and be ready when training camp was supposed to start?
