The teachers did sign the contract, they did play out, the contract expired. The absence of a contract is the catalyst for collective bargaining. This isn't about salary. The teachers and the city have agreed on pay. It's about maintaining current benefits, teacher evaluations, and (amongst other things) requiring the city to institute a timetable for installing air conditioning in the currently air condition-less public schools.

No one thinks the absence of teachers is positive for parents or students, but learn something about what is actually going on before pontificating blowhard union-busting nonsense.

you cant take a kid home a do his/her work for him. you have them for eight hours...but ur still held responsible for the other 16. you cant increase rates or scores without resources. resources come from money. i bet drose didnt rehab at the YMCA. again not a problem drose just the system, and most people dont wont to acknowledge that as the issue. we see a lot of cases where people make something of themselves but at some point someone had to put in some time to impart something into them. Teaching is taken for granted.

I am a strong believer in pay for performance, and Chi Town teachers are not performing. It's simple, pay them bonuses on graduation rates or test scores, watch how much of an interest teachers take in our kids all of the sudden.

I am not saying this is the case with all teachers, I know plenty of great ones myself, but the quality is lacking in many areas.

effective education is so under valued in this country, i too find myself constantly in prayer about situations that i am powerless to do anything about. the system is corrupted by anyone who is able, without a change we will be our own worst enemy. the teachers should be made happy after all they only have our kids to worry about.

Chicago teachers are some of the highest paid teachers in the nation, averaging $71,017(for a 180 day work year). They are currently sending less than 8 out of 100 students to a 4 year school while more than 50% of the kids are dropping out each year, and they want to moan about being underpaid? Sounds like they are being overpaid.

They signed the contract, they need to "play" it out.

Sounds like half the NBA right now if you ask me.

Nothing personal homey but....Donate part of that extension to cover them till they work it out. Its not a "hatement" but if your not part of the solution then ur part of the problem. Education has become one of the most $hitted on professions in the country. They will certify you to teach in a year but you cant be a doctor/lawyer/pro athlete like that. that just totally devalues the position. Is it fair to Thibs that if you guys dont execute his game plan he should be fired. Maybe/Maybe not but it comes with the biz. Now teachers are under that same rule. Good for them to stand for their jobs. Only in America where entertainment/sports garner more attention and influence than education.
