Faried is dominant because he’s explosive and can play basketball… it’s not about the height, wingspan or amount of strength. Faried has great instincts on the court and his athleticism plus his knack to be around the ball and play defense.

I mean he was a 22nd pick – it was strange at the time and now is just laughable.

It’s not hard to make the argument that Faried deserved the ROY award over Irving. For starters, he posted a higher rebounding rate than Love, Griffin, Cousins…everyone not named Dwight Howard or Marcus Camby.

Length *always* matters in basketball. You look at the elite defenders in the league, they almost always have elite wingspan and/or reach for their position.

This is why I’m very pessimistic about Cody Zeller’s chance for success on the defensive end of the floor. He is a 7-footer in name only with that 6’8″ wingspan.

It doesn’t matter so much about wingspan when you go up against skilled 7 footers. At PF you rarely go up against them but there are reasons undersized centers with long wingspans don’t last long. Tall 7 foot skilled big men just have too much of an advantage. But I see your point

It’s always amazing to me how year after year gearing up for the draft there are guys who are supposedly too “undersized” to play in the NBA.

When will people finally realize that their definition of “undersized”, i.e. height of the top of your skull, is not what is important in basketball. Size = length and strength. Faried is 6’6″, so he was labeled undersized. Ridiculous. Look at his 7′ wingspan, 9′ standing reach, incredible hops, and strength of a…well, a manimal, and you tell me now that dude is undersized.

Wake up fans. Look at wingspan, reach, and strength next time you want to call a guy undersized. Not where his cap goes. If this was soccer and Faried has to go up for a header against a guy who was 6’8″, then I might think twice. But basketball ain’t soccer.
