Did LeBron promises Liverpool players wild Vegas weekend?

I so want this story to be true, because I want to believe in a secret Vegas only guys like LeBron James and Kanye West can buy their way into… but I also know the British tabloids make the TMZ look like the Washington Post. My head and heart are torn.

Our story starts here — remember that LeBron James is a part owner of the Liverpool Football Club, one of the powerhouse clubs of English soccer (something LeBron got as part of a marketing deal with the owners of Liverpool and the Boston Red Sox).

That would be the Liverpool side off to a dreadful 0-2-1 start. Liverpool fans are handling this about as well as Lakers fans would handle an 0-8 start.

So LeBron decided to motivate the troops with the promise of a decadent Las Vegas weekend if they win some hardware this year, reports the British tabloid The Sun, which seems to have taken the story down but The Daily Mail picked it up (hat tip to Andrew Sharp at SBN):

‘Everybody in sport needs incentive and if the guys at Liverpool win something this year I will give them the best weekend of their life in Vegas.

‘Kanye is in and trust me, nobody does Vegas like LeBron and Kanye.’

LeBron added: ‘We will take them to places in Vegas 99 percent of people don’t even know exist. There is Vegas and then there is Vegas.’

Again, I so want those quotes to be accurate…

But the head media relations person for Liverpool said LeBron never spoke to The Sun and the story was false.

What’s more, LeBron is just more media savvy than this. While I want to believe he would make this promise to the Liverpool players, LeBron has learned his media lessons well and would not just blurt those kind of comments out to a member of the press. Remember the uproar when a couple summers ago an ESPN reporter covered part of a LeBron and entourage night in Vegas? You think after that and working to rebuild his image he would blurt this out to one of the most sensational of the British tabloids?

But I so want to believe in LeBron’s secret Vegas — the kind of place Prince Henry would challenge Ryan Lochte to a swim race in a hotel pool — that I’m willing to forgive a lot.

But this quote doesn’t pass my smell test. And if the Sun has taken the story down… sorry Liverpool. You may just have to settle for Michael Owen.

This is very believable. When all of the Tiger Woods stuff broke, you read plenty of stories of Tiger, MJ, and Barkley going to these underground clubs & Poker games starting at 100k a hand, with playboy bunnys and high end escorts just falling all over themselves to get next to these guys. Besides celebrities, High rollers get flown in on private jets to gamble at places like Ceasers Palace and the billagio, and those places will take them car shopping if they gamble millions. Just like in real life, the wealthy and powerful get to see another side of life that most of us regular guys don’t.

Those places will fly you in even if you aren’t a super high roller. My friend is an accountant and is far from clearing anything crazy as far as salary, but he has been going for years and they do offer to fly him down once in awhile and comp his rooms and send a plane to get him. I know your point though about there being a different side of probably every high end metropolitan area that isn’t accessible to the rest of us, just wanted to point out that even people far down on the food chain can get some good stuff in Vegas :)

“We will take them to places in Vegas 99 percent of people don’t even know exist. There is Vegas and then there is Vegas.”

damn ..it isn’t no wonder why these athletes’ wives are paranoid. also, wasn’t there talk about starting an nba team in vegas? that’d bring in a haul of money i assume.

Any surprise he needs to team up with Kanye to accomplish this goal? He can never get anything done on his own, amazing.

Ya cause he didn’t pretty much carry the heat to a title. Please tell me what team you’re a fan of and which player single handedly won their team a championship. I know you’re not going to tell me Kobe and the lakers.

Bosh & Wade averaged over 20 a game & Chalmers & Shane Battier played way beyond any expectation. Did you watch the Finals?

      • hannsta - Sep 4, 2012 at 1:16 PM

Okay caton, so name one team that one the finals where only one person on the team was averaging around 20ppg. So he had teammates score 20 ppg. Half of Battier’s 3s were from Lebron drawing the double and having Battier wide open for the kickout, so that can be accredited to Lebron. Im not a Heat fan by any means, but you have to recognize that Lebron was the main reason they won. Wade, Bosh and lets say, Rudy Gay. Still good team but would that have won the ring? Put your hate aside man, it seriously dilutes any arguments you make.

    • miamatt - Sep 4, 2012 at 1:11 PM

Blah blah blah there is not one team EVER that won the finals without stars being stars and role players stepping up. In no way does that diminish LeBron’s role in winning a championship. I guess Robert Horry hitting big shots diminishes Hakeem, Shaq and Kobe’s accomplishments. I guess Steve Kerr and John Paxson diminish Jordan’s, and let’s not even bring up Scottie Pippen, he of the 50 greatest players list.

Admit it, you were a member of Bovine University’s inaugural graduating class weren’t you, cantonbound13?

Is it comfortable for the face of the league to brag about a Vegas no one knows? How about a bookie no one knows? It might explain his frequent failure to take decisive shots?
