Today’s reminder civilization is ending: Juwan Howard is recording his own rap album

Sep 1, 2012, 3:00 PM EDT

I… I mean… I just…

OK, so Howard’s 39. So what? Dr. Dre is 47. Also, pretty sure Dr. Dre has been working on “Detox” for longer than Howard has been in the NBA. Still, Howard joins a long and prolific group of NBA players to join the rap game, including Shaq, Stephen Jackson, and everyone on the seminal classic “B-Ball’s Best Kept Secret.” Actually, Howard was drafted the same year that album came out. So this is really the circle of life so to speak.

What does one rap about as an end-of-the-bench veteran?

Oh, does this mean we get a diss track for or from Lance Stephenson? Because if so, this endeavor is entirely worth it.

    Definition of Rap:
    1. Content that “flow” like a poetry. It should be a short story, over music.
    2. Lyrics/ rhymes that make sense, that have substance
    3. Hard base beat, that compliments the poetry

Instead “the industry” (record labels, music execs & Mtv type outlets) has all but destroyed rap. They have done this by taking all of the creativity from the artists,in an attempt to “cross-over” to sell more CDs to the masses.

To them, its a numbers game….volume in-spite of quality. Therefore we are left with:

    1. Little Wayne, Drake, Jay Z type guys that have NO-FLOW or originality. Every song is about the club, their cars, their wealth or the number of women they’ve slept with(referred to in the most derogatory ways).
    2. Most of their rymes have ZERO lyrical poetic flow. It’s a combination of “Hooks” / catchy phrases and one-liners that together make no sense AT ALL !
    3. Then Lil Wayne and Drake talk over a synthesizer type devise, that should never be used as a style. Even in rap, the voice and tone, is important to the overall skill the artist possesses or doesn’t possess.

Compare the origins of rap and artists to this modern day, watered down version ….Juwan can’t be any worse than these Sell Out SCRUBS !

Listen to some real examples of Rap, check the lyrics, check the flow the stories and messages within:

2Pac, Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, NWA, ICE T, Ghetto Boyz, 8 Ball MJG, Gang Starr, Project Pat, Cypress Hill, Stetsasonic, Nice and Smooth, Pete Rock, Kurtis Blow, Snoop, Ice Cube, Das EFX, DJ Quick, Eric B & Rakim, EPMD, LL, Mos Def, Sir Mix A Lot, Slick Rick, Too Short, Tribe Called Quest etc. etc. etc.

The only new skool dude that gives us a “glimpse” of what Rap is supposed to sound like is T.I. / TIP

It certainly won’t interfere with basketball, he could record while gathering dust on the bench.

Headline from late next year: Dr. Dre releases his long awaited ‘Detox’ album. Thirty-five year old accountants in the suburbs rejoice while high schoolers wonder why Eminem’s step-dad is rapping.

” If you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all”. Therefore I shall remain silent! Plus, I’m a huge fan of the “Fab 5”.

    I’m not a rap fan…so I won’t be buying. Here’s what I am waiting for..
