But by comparing them at the same age, and given that Bryant started later, then Jorndan's pace would be quicker, wouldn't it?

And if Kobe had the field goal percentage up to now what MJ averaged over his entire career, he would have already surpassed him on the point totals list. Again: Jordan outpaces Bryant.

I don't like Kobe or the lakers, hes always been one of my most hated players period. but one of my older co workers was going off about how it's ridiculous to say Kobe is in the top 5 of all time, I think it's ridiculous not to. The rings don't lie, but when you have rings and numbers; you're a legend. Respect.

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/02/kobe-becomes-youngest-player-to-28000-points/

i think by "outpacing" he meant by age. Kobe was in the NBA at 17, so he had a head starrt. But Kobe won championships earlier in career yrs too. Jordan clearly has been "outpaced" by Kobe in some regards.

I'll go with whatever Phil says. Would take Magic over Kobe. Jerry West, the greatest overall Laker ever, is a close comparison. But what if Kobe gets a couple more championships and finishes 1st or 2nd in all time points? Kobe's not there but not done either.

Pretty sure the Spurs won in 2003. I think you meant to say 2000. Shaq won MVP in three of those finals and Kobe could never get back until Gasol came along and played at a championship level. When Gasol's game dipped (in 2011 and 2012), guess what? Lakers don't win. Now you throw in Dwight Howard? Not many reasons why they shouldn't win now.

MJ was the dominant star from Day 1, won every Finals MVP, and realistically could've won several regular season MVPs.

I agree, I think it was a case of David Stern telling Jordan "Listen, why don't you take some time off for a while. Go play baseball. Let this cool off and take care of what you need to do, but we can't have this kind of attention. Once that happens, you can come back."

However, I think there are some interesting facts which separate Jordan from Kobe:

- Jordan shot 51.5% and averaged 28.2 pts/game in his rookie season. That's unheard of. Lebron didn't come close to those rookie numbers. Kobe averaged 7.6 pts/game and shot 41.7% in his rookie year.

- Kobe walked into a championship-caliber team, while Jordan carried a weak Bulls team when he entered the league.

- Jordan played 15 seasons, two of which were the floundering Wizards years which can safely be written off, and one with a broken foot where he missed 63 games. He also retired prematurely in '98. He still has 6 rings. Kobe has played 16 seasons with no major injuries on consistently good playoff teams and still only has 5 rings. All of those rings were obtained by having a dominant scoring big man, while Jordan never had one.

- Jordan shot nearly 50% for his career, which, for his position, is incredibly efficient. Kobe has shot around 45%, which, while good, is a significant gap between the two.

Mark Jackson can be heard calling Kobe the best ever after dropping 81 points. I've said this before: people tend to be enamored at the time and their memories fade. Scottie Pippen said the same thing about Lebron in the ECF Finals last year until he tanked against Dallas. Jim Boeheim said the same thing about Lebron in the Olympics. It's not that close.

The audio of the vid states that Bryant was outpacing Jordan in points and championships. Somebody needs to look up the word "pacing". At no point in his career has this been the case.

Then, later someone says that Bryant is a better shooter. By what standard?

Kobe's good, even great. But nowhere near as good as MJ.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ycn-9455119

It's about a year old, but its the truth.

Read it, learn it, live it.

If you people want to quote Magic etc., there is a quote from Phil in there( who would know more than him?, he coached both).
He states, "Take MJ out of it, its not fair to compare him to anyone."
Kobe barely makes the top 10 of all time.

Lakersucker: You don't have to come right out and say you think Kobe is goat, everyone knows that's what you think, its blatantly obvious.

Jesus dude, he's barely the 3rd best ever guard the Lakers have had all time.

People tend to forget great players prior to Jordan because NBA hyped Jordan so much to make him as the face of basketball. Media also played a big part in making this hype. On 60s to 70s media isn't really a big role to advertise great players.

So we all know that to become greatest you'll need to surpass Jordan, without including the names like KAJ, Oscar robertson, Bill russell, wilt chamberlain, jerry west etc. How can we say that Kobe is the number 2 greatest player behind Jordan, without considering Oscar Robertson who averaged almost a triple double in his career.

Anyway, I'm not a kobe hater, I really appreciate his talent and skills, but no way he'll be on my top 10 list

for those of you who have trouble reading sarcasm, this was sarcasm. Why is this starting a Kobe vs. Jordan debate? Are Jordan and Kobe the only people in the world that have made reverse lay-ups? Kobe's played for 16 years in the exact same offense as Jordan for most of those years. Of course they're going to have similar spots on the floor. That's where the gaps in the defense are.

Is this about shooting form? like they have similar form so this is crazy? why is this a big deal? I could make a video showing Allen Iverson making every single one of these shots... maybe even the dunk. Does that mean that Allen Iverson was as great of a player as Jordan? Of course not, because it took Allen 30 shots a game to make those. I'd be impressed if these were iconic Jordan moments that Kobe was mimicking. Where is Kobe pushing off of Paul Milsap (i.e Bryon Russel) and hitting the jumper to beat the Jazz? Where's Kobe playing with the Flu? Anyone who has played a perimeter position in the NBA has hit at least most of the shots that Jordan made in that video. The fact that Kobe did too, means nothing.

Of course they’re going to have similar spots on the floor. That’s where the gaps in the defense are.

Is this about shooting form? like they have similar form so this is crazy? why is this a big deal? I could make a video showing Allen Iverson making every single one of these shots… maybe even the dunk. Does that mean that Allen Iverson was as great of a player as Jordan? Of course not, because it took Allen 30 shots a game to make those. I’d be impressed if these were iconic Jordan moments that Kobe was mimicking. Where is Kobe pushing off of Paul Milsap (i.e Bryon Russel) and hitting the jumper to beat the Jazz? Where’s Kobe playing with the Flu? Anyone who has played a perimeter position in the NBA has hit at least most of the shots that Jordan made in that video. The fact that Kobe did too, means nothing.

Wow this is crazy! In Kobe's 16 year NBA career, while running the exact same offense, coached by the exact same coach, playing the exact same role, kobe had some turn around jumpers that looked like turn around jumpers that Jordan made. INSANE!!!! And that reverse lay-up was crazy! how did they end up both having a camera man on the baseline for that? They NEVER have those. Plus how many other people can even make a reverse lay-up? two? three? and then that fade away jumper? Kobe was clearly copying that from Jordan. I've never been able to see anyone else do that. No one else even tries. The elbow is Jordan's spot.

If u look at stats, neither Jordan or Kobe can be considered the best who ever played. That honor belongs to the one and only Wilt Chamberlain. No one has ever even come close to averaging 50 points and 27 rebounds for an entire season! Not even close

@cosanostra71, they seem to only remember the 6 championship years. I've NEVER once said Kobe is better than MJ. Read my comments. But some of these guys make MJ out to be bigger than life and refuse to acknowledge Kobe's career achievements. On one hand they say Kobe never won without Shaq, but MJ never won without Pippen. The season after MJ 1st retired the Bulls made it to the 7th game of the Eastern Conf. Finals and Pippen was a MVP candidate in the regular season. But some of these clowns act like MJ won 6 titles all by himself. Pippen and Rodman were both HOF'ers and Grant was very close to that status.
Sorry to burst your bubble, I don't own a recliner. I also don't drink during the week.

No one is saying that Kobe isn't ONE of the best ever, top 10. He's just not THE BEST ever.
He'd start on the dream team huh? Over Jordan? You're a tool and so is Magic, IF he actually said that.
This is why a lot of people can't stand you on this site. You want to have your opinion, but you don't want others to have theirs. You're a hypocritical biased homer.
Jordan was better across the board, offensively,& defensively.
The stats, awards and mvps bear that out.
But, since he wasn't a laker, you can't accept that. That Madam is what's mind boggling. Facts staring you in the face and you deny, deny, deny.

I find it amazing that former/current coaches & players all overwhelmingly acknowledge Kobe's place in NBA history as one of the all time greats. Barkley and Magic both went on record and said Kobe would've been on the "Dream Team" Magic even went as far as to say Kobe could've started on that team. Those are two of the greatest players EVER! But "Joe Blow" sitting in his LazyBoy with his smartphone and 7th alcoholic beverage of the day somehow knows more about basketball than they do. Absolutely mind boggling!!
