Jordan, Carmelo do some fundraising with President Obama

Aug 22, 2012, 10:55 PM EDT

Just like you and I, the people around the NBA care who is president. And while you can’t draw hard and fast lines, a quick look at who donated to whom shows players pretty much lean Democratic and front office/ownership leans Republican.

Democrat Barack Obama used some of that player star power for a series of fundraisers on Wednesday. Michael Jordan, Carmelo Anthony, Patrick Ewing and others including David Stern were on hand for the events.

“It is very rare that I come to an event where I’m like the fifth or sixth most interesting person,” Obama joked at the Lincoln Center dinner.

The skills camp ($5,000 a head), autograph session then dinner Wednesday night reportedly raised about $3 million for Obama’s re-election campaign.

Then came the perks of being president — he changed out of his suit and along with actors George Clooney and Toby McGuire played some pickup hoops with the NBAers.

Of course, in today’s political discourse there must be a counter attack on everything. Because God forbid we just have a civil debate of the issues (both sides have attack dogs that do this, everyone is at fault). If you want to see the Republican attack from the Weekly Standard you can — they remind us that Jordan is a failed baseball player and try to link ‘Melo to a drug dealer. It all comes off as petty, selfish and childish to me, but then most of our political discourse does.

glad to see the celebrity in chief is up to his usual tricks

    • cosanostra71 - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:00 PM

      George Colony?

    • verytalldad - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:48 PM

That old politician trick of raising money for campaigns!!! Obama is so dastardly. And where do these wealthy millionaires get off giving money to OBAMA!!! Didnt they learn from Jenna Jameson when she said rich people should vote for republicans.

I think the old tricks is the Weekly Standard with the headline “Obama hosting fundraiser with former drug dealing snitch” and that person turns out to be CARMELO ANTHONY!!!

I guess that whole “you didnt build that” attack line only applies to white business men, not wealthy black self-made athletes.

But hey, its late summer on a basketball blog- TIME TO ATTACK OBAMA.

    • skids003 - Aug 23, 2012 at 9:02 AM

And the players are too dumb to figure out they are in the group he’s going after.

  2. rubberinnertube - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:03 PM

So arrogant. Obama’s comment implies that he feels he is automatically the most interesting person at any event he attends. Of anything you could ever say about him, it’s his unbridled arrogance that turns me off most.

    • youmisunderstood - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:24 PM

Clearly you’re the guy who failed the “reading comprehension” part of exams in high school. Continue reading to where it says “Obama joked at the Lincoln Center dinner.” He was joking. He wasn’t angrily thumping his fist that he wasn’t the most interesting person. He JOKINGLY SAID it, addressing a room of people. Either you’re a moron without the ability to decipher simple English, or you’re a typical hater Republican. God I hate hater Republicans. So much worse than normal ones.

      • youmisunderstood - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:26 PM

I’m actually replying again because I’m still stunned by your inability to read and comprehend at the same time.

    • verytalldad - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:52 PM

How arrogant that he has a sense of humor. Where the hell does Barry O get off. You know who else has sense of humor… KENYANS!!!!!

I guess you like your politicians like robots…. like Mitt Romney.

Because its really arrogant to assume the guys who is the most powerful man in the world, with nuclear codes in a briefcase, orders attacks on bin Laden, is NOT the most interesting man in the room.

I think the word your looking for is ignorance… and thats to describe you.

    • kinggw - Aug 23, 2012 at 12:28 AM

He’s the POTUS dumbass. He’s pretty much guaranteed to be the most interesting person in the room. Just curious, how does acknowledging the obvious make him arrogant?

    • akmgiants - Aug 23, 2012 at 12:45 AM

what about your lack of appreciation for sarcasm?

    • saint1997 - Aug 23, 2012 at 6:57 AM

Take away the fact he was joking, take away the fact you haven’t voted for someone because YOU think they are arrogant (nothing to do with policy), you’re still left with the fact that he actually is probably the most interesting man in most rooms he goes into!! He’s the President of the fricking United States! A historical figure love him or hate him! I’d like to quote Winston Churchill, “The greatest argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter”.

      • florida727 - Aug 23, 2012 at 8:10 AM

“A historical figure love him or hate him.” Thanks. I’ll take b).

I’ll never figure out how people still choose to support this clown. He’s raised the national debt by $4 million PER DAY since he’s been in office (I’m old enough that this might not effect me personally, but who’s going to pay that debt eventually?). His “stimulus” package to create jobs has been an enormous failure. His wife spend money (oops, correction, TAXPAYER MONEY) like a drunken sailor, which may be an injustice to drunken sailors the world over… she FAR outspends them. The list goes on. He want to “redistribute wealth”? Really? I work my @$$ off to get ahead, and I have to share it with some lazy jerk who has no work ethic? What’s it going to take for his supporters to realize he wants to turn America into a Marxist state? What’s it going to take for his supporters to realize he’s a Muslim? Seriously, I just don’t get the fascination with this guy. I really don’t. I’m trying to look at it from an unbiased perspective, and I view this guy as nothing but a failure. Someone feel free to explain what I’M missing.

      • blueintown - Aug 23, 2012 at 8:51 AM

florida727 – You’re trying to come at this from an unbiased perspective? “He’s a Muslim” does not bode well for your endeavors. More to the point, it makes you sound like an imbecile. Forty percent of his “stimulus” package that you so loathe was a middle class tax cut. If you don’t like it, send a check back to the treasury. Developed countries going through recessions have precedent for enacting such measures (see: every recession in ever civilized nation ever). Please tell me more about how he is a Marxist. In fact, please explain Marxism to me. I’m sure you have an air-tight description of sociopolitical systems.

      • cbt22 - Aug 23, 2012 at 12:54 PM

@florida727 Do you have actual proof he is a Muslim? And even if he is why does that matter we have something called the constitution which includes the bill of rights that actually allows Obama to legally be a Muslim in America (man sure sucks to have religious freedom we should just kick all non believers of the right god right out the country shouldn’t we). Seriously Obama isn’t the reason the country is the way it is, it’s people like you who are ignorant and discriminate (you clearly are biased about Obama because you think he is Muslim) and go around and vomit out twisted and convoluted information you heard from an entertainment news channel or site. But mainly someone who thinks its important enough to say someone is a Muslim with no actually proof on that matter is someone who spreads hate, lies, and fear.

      • guyaneserj - Aug 24, 2012 at 6:53 AM

        @Blueintown… couldn’t have said better myself. .. kudos 2 u sir!!

      • saint1997 - Aug 24, 2012 at 11:01 PM

How did I just get proud looking at the comments of a bunch of people I don’t know? Actually I don’t care it made me happy to know that there are still people in the world who string a coherent sentence together and accurately point out pure lunacy. We got him boys… :)

    • unxpexted1 - Aug 23, 2012 at 10:35 AM

umm…the dude is the president of the United States, probably the most recognizable position on the planet outisde of the Pope. So yea, I’d say he’s pretty popular.

  3. superseahawk - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:25 PM

I do not care who the president is, scumbag a or scumbag b.

    • verytalldad - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:53 PM

thanks for the opinion. You do not care. Glad you took the time to write that.

I’m glad you responded, so thank you.

    • saint1997 - Aug 23, 2012 at 6:53 AM

take a little pride in your country. Do something for them rather than just waiting for them to help you. Pathetic…

  4. jerdogthompson - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:25 PM

I knew there was a reason I didn’t like melo & MJ. Total douches supporting a total douche.

    • saint1997 - Aug 23, 2012 at 6:53 AM

  6. spytdi - Aug 22, 2012 at 11:32 PM

All 3 overhyped: MJ’s front office knowledge, Carmelo’s value to a team, and Barry O’s …well, anything.

  7. censoredpost - Aug 23, 2012 at 12:09 AM

Considering Mitt hides as much or more money off-shore every year, as those guys made in salary combined per year (and more than 200+mil Americans make in a life time),all to keep from paying the taxes you and I do per dollar, I’m ok with it.

    • censoredpost - Aug 23, 2012 at 12:18 AM

Besides according to Mitt and his Fellow Nephite ( Fair of Skin and delightsome) Mormons, Obama, Jordan and Melo are Lamanites (dark of skin and unpleasing to the eye. Punished as such by god for not standing valiantly enough with god against lucifer) and can’t get into heaven (AKA KOLOB) except as slaves. (2 Nephi 5:21). Fact.

      • atahualpaoxford - Aug 23, 2012 at 10:26 PM

Can anybody translate this for me…???

      • florida727 - Aug 24, 2012 at 8:15 AM

Yeah, I can. Nephi is the first book in the “Book of Mormon”. Mormonism is the cult that believes eternal salvation is attained by “works”, things such as faithfulness to church leaders, Mormon baptism, tithing, secret temple rituals, etc. They believe there is no “eternal life” without Mormon membership. They have a lot of other weird beliefs too (ie. God the Father was once a man but “progressed” to godhood) but I won’t detail them here. The problem with a works-based faith though is that it’s exclusionary. (According to them, if I’m poor, thereby unable to tithe according to their requirements, then I’m automatically excluded from eternal salvation.) According to orthodox Christianity ANYONE can spend eternity in heaven. By faith. If it was by works, you could boast about it. Sorry, but that’s false.

  9. kacapaco - Aug 23, 2012 at 12:59 AM

    • saint1997 - Aug 23, 2012 at 6:59 AM

  12. elComandanteenJefe - Aug 23, 2012 at 8:36 AM

PBT is beginning their downward spiral once politics gets involved with sports. This is one of the MANY reasons why I switched from the self proclaimed leader in sports to PBT. Do me and many us sports fan a favor and keep to sports.

  13. hwatt - Aug 23, 2012 at 8:58 AM

haha, I like how Kurt reports on an innocuous event around a b-ball loving president and the hornets nest is activated… here’s to 4 more years of presidential basketball! Kurt if Obama installs some hardwood at the White House I’d like to be updated at least weekly on all progress.

I’d also like detailed skills recap/breakdown of this event. Can Jordan still make a comeback, can Obama go 1 on 1 w Jordan and televise a special? hmmm

  14. latchbeam - Aug 23, 2012 at 9:45 AM

Great idea Obama… bring on a gambling addict and a pothead to campaign with you. Another great decision!!

  15. unxpexted1 - Aug 23, 2012 at 9:48 AM

Whew, white people get REAL hype when its time to bash Obama. If you dont like his politics, then cool. But when did everything get so personal when it comes to president bashing. You dont have to like the man, but at LEAST respect the position.

    • guyaneserj - Aug 23, 2012 at 10:05 AM

      EXACTLY … Damn…..

    • mrpostman985 - Aug 23, 2012 at 10:10 AM

      • scalfor3 - Aug 23, 2012 at 12:02 PM

yeah there was never any backlash against bush. the press loved him….

god some of the comments on this article are stupid. there are perfectly legitimate reasons to side either way politically but it all gets bogged down into retarded stereotypes. romney is a racist rich white guy! obama is a commie muslim who hates america! durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    • guyaneserj - Aug 23, 2012 at 10:48 AM

      He was looking for WMD’s..

    • ryanw822 - Aug 27, 2012 at 10:29 PM

I’m sure you werent saying that from 2000-2008.

  16. progress2011 - Aug 23, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Lemme help remind ya, why folk will vote for anyone, other than the previous failed policies. Heres a quick snapshot.

    1. Iraqi war based on forged documents and intelligence.
    2. No WMD’s they claimed they knew where they were
    3. American Soldiers ordered to torture prisoners at Guantanamo and other bases ( against the Geneva Conventions Laws to which we are a member ).
    4. Illegal/ secret prisons ( against Geneva Conventions and other international treaties we are members of )
    5. Spying on Americans
    6. Suspending Habeas Corpus-right that an accused person detained, have the right to a quick and speedy trial/ legality of detention ( Guantanamo etc. )
    7. “Capitalist” / Private business owners were allowed to take businesses overseas. They received Billions in tax cuts. This helped contribute to joblessness and the recession because Capitalist / Private business owners took money from the tax system and never put money back into the system.
    8. Unsecured boarders, after 9/11….Bush left office and never secured U.S. boarders as he promised.
    9. Billions of tax payers dollars a month being spent on TWO loosing battles, Afghanistan and Iraq….BUSH LEFT BOTH WARS TO BE DEALT WITH BY PRESIDENT OBAMA!
Zero dollars were budgeted for the war. Dick Cheney said, the proceeds from the oil we would pay for the war. Well, the Iraqi people burned or sabotaged all the oil fields, and we made no proceeds to pay for the war. Therefore the Trillions of dollars spent over the course of the war, were all at the American Tax Payers expense !
    10. Afghanistan achieved the largest Opium crop ever, after Bush took over the failing Democracy.
    11. The top 1% of millionaires/ Capitalists/ Private business owners earned record profits every quarter, while the middle class disappeared !
    12. Failure to adequately respond to national emergencies domestically, Katrina.
    13. Outing CIA agents and protecting the guilty Scooter Libby from going to prison. Invoked Executive Privilege to protect Dick Cheney.
    14. Over 4,000 of my fellow soldiers HONORABLY died….based on dishonorable mis-truths to get us into the war.
    15. September 2008 ( 2 months before he leaves office ) the failed Bush administration posts a $ 407 BILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT !
    16. September 2008 ( 2 months before he leaves office ) the failed Bush administration policies have led to a 6.1 % Unemployment rate. The highest in 5 years. And record home foreclosures.
    17. September 2008 ( 2 months before Bush leaves office ) 600,000 jobs lost in 2008 alone !
    18. September 2008 the biggest financial collapse in American history since the Great Depression.

I could go on for days BUT….this is a sports blog ! I apologize to my fellow sports bloggers BUT somebody gotta tell the truth ! Feel free to re-post these FACTS elsewhere to dispel the mis-truths and fear tactics by the right.

    • guyaneserj - Aug 24, 2012 at 7:03 AM

No need 2 apologize progress2011. When complete and utter idiots make idiotic comments based on the furthest thing from reality, it requires a well thought out level headed response.. The vilification of Obama is bordering on complete and utter craziness.. it’s often stated that African Americans like to use the race card… but from where I’m sitting.. I’d like to know how such a FAILED President as Bush.. NEVER endured 0.0001% of loathing and hatred that Obama has endured..

Maybe, I’m a lil dumb, but I need help here.. The level of disrespect show is incredulous… Birthers? REALLY? Muslim? Disrespecting his wife? Children? I cld go on, but it’s just ridiculous.. WOW people.. WOW!!!

    • florida727 - Aug 24, 2012 at 8:27 AM

Let me go after the low-hanging fruit for you…

Posted a $407 billion dollar deficit? How about the multiple BILLION dollars in debt your boy Obama has racked up?

6.1% unemployment? Isn’t unemployment now well over EIGHT PERCENT?

600,000 jobs lost in 2008? That would be an improvement for Obama’s time in office.

I’m not worried though. You Kool-Aid drinkers will figure out a way to blame all of this on Bush too, even after FOUR YEARS of opportunity to change things around. Face it, your boy’s a failure on virtually every level imaginable. Then again, what do you expect from someone with such outstanding credentials to lead the country. After all, he was a community organizer. What a joke.

      • blueintown - Aug 24, 2012 at 6:38 PM

600,000 jobs lost in 2008? Try 2.6 million. That’s million with an ‘m’. Meanwhile, we’ve had twenty-seven straight months of job growth. Debt has increased. Obviously. Basic math time: In a recession, does revenue increase or decrease? The correct, and obvious answer, is decrease. Less people in the tax base, and those remaining paying at a lower rate. Obama’s failure’s are quite similar to Bush’s…he ramped up spending on two wars while cutting taxes. Out of necessity? History will judge. But the wars are winding down, and he has agreed multiple cuts are needed (while Paul Ryan parades around the country opposing the military cuts he authored himself).

But you never answered my question. Why is he a marxist? More importantly, how do you know he is muslim? What information are you privy to that the rest of the industrialized world is not? Please. Enlighten me.

      • progress2011 - Aug 24, 2012 at 7:07 PM

        Hahahahaha….florida….REALLY !!!

Let me go back a little further, to help the mentally challenged…

Lemme slap you with a few more facts, as to why “PRESIDENT” Obama is the best choice because we can’t return to failed policies.

        1. President Clinton left Dubya and the failed policies of the Republicans with a Budget Surplus of 230 BILLION DOLLARS !!!
After 8 years of the Republican failed policies, 1 Dec 08 ( one month before Bush leaves office ) Feds confirm the U.S. has been in a deep recession for the past year, since December 2007 !

        2. December 2008, Bush has the lowest approval rating in history for a U.S. President since Richard Nixon. Bush’s approval rating was 29% ( Nixon who was impeached was 24% ).
Conversely, President Bill Clinton Left office with a 66% approval rating. One of the highest in history. Today President Obama (even with a do-nothing Congress) is at 50%.

        3. 19 Nov 08 ( 2 mths before Bush leaves office ) Dow drops to 5 year low to 7997. Today, under President Obama it is 13,157.97

        4. As you can see, significant progress has been made. But remember, the country was tinkering on the verge of a 2nd Depression. Today, no one is talking about a Depression. We turned that corner. But another 4 years (with an improved Congress) we will return to the prosperity, witnessed under President Clinton.

If you can’t comprehend these very clear FACTS…the only low hanging fruit would be the dried prunes on the ground, which size and substance, are similar to what would be your brain !

Let me know if you need more facts to pull the right lever…..I’m teaching all day!

      • guyaneserj - Aug 25, 2012 at 11:28 AM

Kook-Aid Drinkers? WOW! Not only are u obviously a narcissistic idiot, but apparently ur also a racist Florida727. If you can’t construct a well thought out, factually based argument without resorting to bigotry and disdain, I suggest u sit ur dumb ass down and crawl back in2 da hole you obviously just crawled out from! WOW! Complete DUMBASS

    • ryanw822 - Aug 27, 2012 at 10:44 PM

and four years later the libs are still blaming the past.

      BUSH! BUSH! BUSH!!!!!!!!

      Keep deflecting the real issues…

  17. progress2011 - Aug 24, 2012 at 7:16 PM

    Also Florida,

I gotta remind you…President Obama Graduated Harvard with Honors….Dubya, on the other hand was a C student “AT BEST ” (that’s after his daddy made a call to the administrator) !

Also, nothing against male cheerleaders BUT I would have a community organizer on my team before a dude yelling ….” Gimme an A ” …..ahahahahahahaaha !!!
