Quote of the Day: Scalabrine thinks you’re an idiot for mocking him

Aug 15, 2012, 10:13 AM EST

“The way I look at it is if that’s the case (people are mocking me), then—and no disrespect—you’d have to be an idiot. That I won some contest to be in the NBA? Or that I don’t have to fight every day? That I’m not the first guy on the floor and the first in the weight room and the last to leave? That I haven’t been waking up 5:30 my whole life to train? I’d have to think you’d are an idiot to think I’m a joke. They might, which would be disappointing. Maybe it is that. But I know why I’m here.”

Brian Scalabrine, from Sam Smith’s must-read profile of him on Bulls.com.

You may have seen Scalabrine as the human victory cigar at the end of the bench, the guy just lucky to be there. But it wasn’t luck. There was a reason that Tom Thibodeau wanted the Bulls to go get him when he went to Chicago from Boston. There was a reason Kevin Garnett loved him as a teammate, and Jason Kidd the same things back when the Nets reached the finals. He worked hard and was a great teammate. He didn’t get there just because he won the genetic lottery, he got there with effort.

Right now it may be the end, Sacabrine wants to be picked up for another season but is not finding offers. He does have offers to do television, but he wants to stay in the game.

If this is it, he has had a 10-year NBA career and made $20 million in salary. But sure, he’s the joke.

Sooooo true, and there are a ton of idiot fans who say players “suck”, yet if they ever ran into said player on a basketball court, they would get embarrassed beyond belief. The worst NBA players are still among the best players in the world. People tend to forget that. Plus, Scal is a Trojan and a former Celtic, so I’ll always love the guy.

hmmm…seems like he is taking the personal jabs a bit hard. everyone, even Kobe (can you believe it? LOL) has their detractors. someone will always poke fun at you because you are a public target in the public eye. that said, hey man…good for the guy to be in the NBA for 10 years. he did something right. he is obviously a “glue guy” in the locker room. sometimes, that is just as important as having 10 points in a game. but yeah, scals…relax man…take a cue from Luke Walton and just go with the flow and stay cool, man.

I’m sure it’d get tiring if over the course of your career people were constantly telling you how lucky you were to be in that position. That you’re getting gigs just because of some fortunate happening.

He’s confident in his abilities, knows the hard work he’s put in to being an NBA player, and that’s something to be commended.

  3. glink123 - Aug 15, 2012 at 11:48 AM

Comparing Scal to Luke Walton is a slap in the face to Scal. The reason coaches love Scal is because of his ability to explain the coach’s offensive and defensive sets to players who are, to be kind, mentally challenged. Most of these kids jumping from high school to the NBA aren’t exactly college material. Scal explains things to the players behind the scenes that doesn’t make them feel like idiots.

    • eventhorizon04 - Aug 15, 2012 at 12:12 PM

….Well, the Bulls just overhauled their bench, meaning they have a bunch of new guys who have to learn Thibodeau’s defensive system, and they have a young point guard drafted in the first round who struggled at times in summer league, yet Scal’s unemployed.

So you’re probably overstating his usefulness as a “coach disguised as a player,” if the Bulls are unwilling to give him the 15th spot on their roster.

    • unxpexted1 - Aug 15, 2012 at 3:58 PM

yea but Luke Walton actually plays in games before the last 2 minutes during a 20 point lead. No disrespect to Scals, but Luke did get consistent run for awhile even as awful as he was

  4. jjordannba - Aug 15, 2012 at 12:32 PM

But Scalabrine-Jokes are what make you a fan favorite, at least your not Luke Walton, you will never hear a whole crowd chant LUKE WALTON! Like they do SCAL-A-BRINE! Clap clap clap clap clap SCAL-A-BRINE! clap clap clap clap clap!

    • 00maltliquor - Aug 15, 2012 at 6:40 PM

The whole crowd DID chant for Luke in LA

They went ” Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuke” all the time.

  5. rajbais - Aug 15, 2012 at 12:54 PM

Yes and Chicagoans are idiots for having any respect for this useless redhead!!!

What an insult to Greg Stiemsma!!

    • svupper - Aug 15, 2012 at 1:37 PM

Saying Scal is a joke, is a joke..

I know its Italy but remeber the lockout last year, how he showcased his skills, when i actually got the opportunity?

      http://www.nesn.com/2011/10/brian-scalabrine-looking-impressive-starting-for-italian-team-video.html

Im not saying he’s going to do that on the NBA level, but Scal is a baller!

  6. j0esixpack - Aug 15, 2012 at 1:03 PM

So basically he’s just saying what everyone else only thinks about Helin?

  7. rushbacker - Aug 15, 2012 at 1:55 PM

    The White Mamba!

  8. haterhurter937 - Aug 15, 2012 at 3:11 PM

he is a joke, dont care how much money he’s made.

    • spideysdog - Aug 15, 2012 at 3:27 PM

He’s a joke, yet he’s spent 10 years flying on private jets, playing a game he loves and making 20 million dollars, while you’re commenting on another utterly useless Helin article?

      LOL…. nice try.

  9. haterhurter937 - Aug 15, 2012 at 3:31 PM

lol you mean “watched the game he loves” cause he sure wasnt playing.

    • 00maltliquor - Aug 15, 2012 at 6:49 PM

      LOL!!

Great banter between you two, thought spideysdog got you ’till I scrolled down for the last jab! Niiice!

  10. beast2727 - Aug 15, 2012 at 3:47 PM

    Funny

  11. eunbok - Aug 15, 2012 at 4:18 PM

It’s not Scalabrine’s fault that he looks like Jackie Moon from Semi-Pro

  12. glink123 - Aug 15, 2012 at 6:54 PM

The Bulls are unwilling to give Scal their 15th roster spot because he’s a 10+ year veteran. As such, the CBA calls for a minimum salary in 2012-2013 of $1,379,000 for any team that signs Scal. That’s a pretty salty salary for a bench coach at this point in his career. You’ll likely see him in a suit on the bench as an assistant coach making $150k.

    Go get ‘em Veal.

  14. mytthor - Aug 15, 2012 at 11:47 PM

I think the point isn’t that the haters are gonna hate, the point is that the haters are just flat out wrong. Just remember that worst player on an NBA team still means he can absolutely demolish any player you know.

  15. jengibre23 - Aug 16, 2012 at 12:13 AM

SCALO I HAVE YOUR JERSEY DOG! REP IT FOR US GINGERS ROUND TE GREAT U.S. Dude come to LA so I can watch you

  16. velascochad - Aug 16, 2012 at 1:07 AM

he’s the man, the myth the legend.. he’s the GGOAT (Greatest Ginger Of All Time).

    when he plays he dazzles,

    he’s a champion! Celtics can’t win a championship ring since he’s gone.

he’s the white mamba for a reason, and that reason is because kobe might have the game winning shot to make them up 1 or 2. but when he enters the game his team wins by 10-20 points!

his defense is like his ass, so tight!

so mamba lets go! if bulls reach the finals it will be the white and black mamba show!
