The U.S. got supremely hosed by referees obviously bribed by the USSR. If Russia makes the final this year it won’t be anything at all like ’72. That was a whole ‘nother world back then. And only “amateurs” were allowed to play. So the U.S. had collegians and the USSR had older, well-seasoned players paid by the state. It was hardly a level playing field. At least today there are no pretenses about who can play.
