Teams like Dallas under Don Nelson where playing at a fast pace before D'Antoni was even coaching at Phoenix. The rule changes also had a lot do with the pace increase. The league went from being able to handcheck in the 90s to using your elbow on the perimeter to no contact on the perimeter, which allowed guards to run amok. Also the lack of physical, skilled low post players has also increased the tempo. Less post ups equal faster pace.

At a time when the NBA was dragging itself to the slowest tempos in decades, D'Antoni flipped the switch and went fast -- seven seconds or less. Is it new? No. Did it change the dynamic in the NBA and are other teams stealing those ideas now? Yes.

The idea that D'Antoni is thought to have a "system" or considered an "innovator" is a joke. He runs a high 1/5 pick n roll (you know, the oldest play in basketball) with three 3 PT shooters (two on the wing and one in the corner). To mix it up, he'll have the 4 and 5 set a pick at the top for the point guard or the point guard will pass it to the 4 or 5 at the top, run to a wing, stop, and run back to the ball for a dribble handoff. Hardly innovative basketball. Guys like Jerry Sloan, Rick Adelman, and Lenny Wilkens were running pick n roll heavy offenses (with a lot more diversity i.e. motion, triangle, high post, low post, and side pick n roll elements) before D'Antoni was an assistant in the NBA. Let alone coaches like Rudy T were taking advantage of stretch 4s to spread the floor in the mid-90s (if not earlier). Funny thing about these coaches is that they didn't have to sacrifice defense for offense like D'Antoni does.
