Nets’ Stackhouse said Rockets overpaid for Jeremy Lin

Way more than fans, NBA players get that they are commodities in a business. They want to get as much as they can while they can because they know the window closes fast. Guys may be a little jealous of other players’ deals, but nobody really begrudges each other making money.

So long as they feel the player earned it.

Which is why what Jerry Stackhouse told Sports Illustrated (transcribed by the New York Post) about the Jeremy Lin contract is telling. Guys around Las Vegas (where everyone is melting and going to Summer League) were shaking their head.

Stackhouse, an 18-year NBA veteran, said in a video interview on SI.com that the Rockets’ three-year, $25.1 million offer sheet was too much to match “for a guy that’s only played 25 games for you…

“I think it’s too much, I think they’re gonna look back three years from now and say we maybe could have used this to go out and get another player,” Stackhouse said. … “I think it’s going to hamper them.”

I’m not going to rehash the Lin debate — the Knicks made a bet that Raymond Felton can regain his old form (or close to it) and that was more affordable. It’s a fair bet on the court, the off-the-court intangibles are hard to measure. New York made its call.

But what Stackhouse said is the fit-for-print version of what a lot of players around the league think.

They all make millions, but jealousy is rampant in the NBA. Lin’s not fault if he got that deal.

  2. tonydelk - Jul 20, 2012 at 7:24 PM

Now this is news! I haven’t been able to sleep not knowing what Jerry Stackhouse thought about the Jeremy Lin contract. Guna sleep like a baby tonight!

Not jealousy. He was asked a question and answered it. And accurately. The Rockets are going nowhere with Lin, and won’t be able to fill out their roster (lest people not forget, there is NO ONE there other than Martin’s expiring contract that will be moved in February) because if they get anyone of worth, it’s going to put them in cap/tax hell by 2015 and beyond.

It’s total jealousy! Stackhouse should just STFU! How petty is it that you begrudge another player’s ability to negotiate a good contract? Even if he thought that, from a player solidarity perspective he should never have said it out loud! His making that statement to a reporter makes it clear to everyone that he’s jealous no one was willing to pay him that kind of money! That’s like saying that every other crazy contract out there is justified, but THIS one isn’t!

Jeremy Lin’s contract takes into account the popularity that he has, and the extra fan base that he attracts! Houston could easily see that because they remembered what Yao Ming was able to do for them in that regard! Jim Dolan was an idiot to not have the foresight to take that into account.

But Boozer & Brand deal where fair right…. SMH!!!

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:28 PM

No, they’ve been universally shat upon as horrible deals from the start (Boozer) and since the injuries exacerbated Brand’s already declining skills as a slightly more mobile/willing defender and the same player as Boozer is.

      • magicfanintn - Jul 20, 2012 at 11:13 PM

But players haven’t typically commented on other player’s contracts until the Lin deal….at least not to comment negatively.

  5. eddit13 - Jul 20, 2012 at 7:33 PM

Here come the Linsaniacs defending that dumb contract. Ya’ll miss the 2nd half of the NBA season last year? Lin didn’t a game outside of Cleveland until Woodson took over and gave the ball to Melo. But I’m going to take a nap.

They’re terrible on every website. Especially the “obvious” ones, if you get my meaning.

How much u gonna offer to the guy who put his school & his country to the nba map. Sold out your arena, sell thousands of jersey in just25 games. 1million??? A lot of players stays more than 10yrs in the Nba and did nothing. Same as ordinary basketball player. Common guys makes your style and unique story so they can offer u a billion…

I love Stackhouse, but this his hating. Especially from a guy who played with Joe Johnson in Atlanta … And now followed him to Brooklyn with Johnson getting a 6 year $119 Million deal and the Nets picking up 4 years and $90 Million. If he doesn’t call out Johnson’s deal he has no credibility since Johnson makes more than LeBron James!!!

  10. BigBeachBall - Jul 20, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Melo, JR, and Stackhouse are treating Lin like he stole something from them…

  11. timb12 - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:20 PM

I’m not a fan of the Lin deal, they should have resigned Dragic. That being said, I don’t know how much Stackhouse is making this year, but he’ll probably end up being payed more per minute than Lin.

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:53 PM

Vet minimum, virtual player-coach with Ave. Nice try though. That actually STRENGTHENS his valid point, and has no reason to be “jealous” of Lin.

      • timb12 - Jul 20, 2012 at 9:17 PM

I didn’t say the Lin contract was justified. Player coaches are overrated. I’m sure the heat won because Juwan Howard. Stackhouse isn’t much of a player or coach. He’s not jealous, but he shouldn’t be getting that much money for what he has to offer.

      • magnetik713 - Jul 21, 2012 at 6:22 AM

        LOL still overpaid.

      • muhangis - Jul 21, 2012 at 6:53 AM

Are you completely brain dead? Anybody with any sense knows that “player-coaches” don’t mean squat! They are absolutely over-rated! And only because of men of foolish sense like you.

  12. malcom1985 - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:20 PM

here comes Jerry Stackhouse trying to put his name in the media in an attempt to become relevant in the NBA. must be tough to be so irrelevant in the NBA, going on a decade. if anyone is overpaid it’s jerry stackhouse. atlanta couldn’t get rid of him fast enough, sorry brooklyn. :(

  13. 00maltliquor - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:22 PM

How about you focus on your own team, Jerry, and all those HORRENDOUS contracts!

Or how about anyone who spends over $10K on you, Jerry, oobviously overpaid.

    • jimeejohnson - Jul 20, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Nail hit on head. Good show!

  14. nemyx1 - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:22 PM

Pretty sure the Nets overpaid for Stackhouse. Dude was done in 2008.

  15. rodge1 - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:25 PM

    Who is Jerry Stackhouse?

  16. willcoop62 - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:33 PM

First of all if someone is paying you that kind of cheese, you go get it. Second, the Rockets don’t have any idea what the roster is going to look like because they have gotten rid of everyone. Now, if the Rockets get Asik, which they will, and Howard decides he likes Houston because of Hakeem. Then what do you do with a 25 million dollar backup in Asik? Hakeem trying to teach Asik the dream shake would be like teaching a one legged man in a ass kicking contest how to kick box. Can’t blame Lin, we knew some sucker was gonna jump at the bait. Maybe the contract is too much, but Calvin Murphy ain’t walking in that door either.

  17. trybe29dr - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:48 PM

Jerry Stackhouse makes the vet minimum $1.3M…

  18. trybe29dr - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:50 PM

People forget how good Elton Brand was. He was a great post player who went 20/10 ppg/rpg…great defender as well…

  19. itsthemelman82 - Jul 20, 2012 at 9:44 PM

So this is news worthy… a guy far far FAR away from those glory day at UNC has an opinion on Lin’s contract. What’s worse I’m bothering to leave a comment as if I care

  20. theawesomersfranchise - Jul 20, 2012 at 10:03 PM

In a unrelated note MSG stock has dropped $3 a share, 8.5% since the Knicks refused to match. A loss of 93 million.

  21. diablito0402 - Jul 20, 2012 at 10:14 PM

Everyone hating on lin contract is jelous, you dont comment on someones money!!!! Batum got 44 million when he is worth 20, and nobody hating on him. Wow, just shut up already..

  22. lakerluver - Jul 20, 2012 at 10:23 PM

Why are some of these players so concerned about what J.L. is making?!! Aren’t these NBA players supposed to be on the same side?! I’m not even a J.L. fan but I really hope he lights it up in Houston.

  23. jkaflagg - Jul 20, 2012 at 10:27 PM

Funny, most of the top draft picks these days are college freshmen who played about 30 games before getting big bucks in the NBA…..I think Kyrie Irving played what, 11 games in college ?

Let’s be blunt…..this is pure jealousy, with some unfortunate racial overtones to boot…..

  24. metalhead65 - Jul 20, 2012 at 10:33 PM

the next player who turns down a big contract because he thinks he is not worth it will be the first. the rest of you guys need to shut up about it because you would have done the same thing. not his fault he got hurt and only played 25 games. if it was not for him the knicks do not even make the playoffs so the last thing the guys on that team or any other should be doing is complaining. I hope the fans let them have it when they resort to their losing ways with the healthy ball hogs that are melo and stoudmire play their usual selfish games.

  25. willcoop62 - Jul 20, 2012 at 10:44 PM

Soooo, Lin and Asik are the only two players on the oster huh. Oh Calvin, get loose you’re going in!
