Celtics trade for Courtney Lee done, but it got very complex

Jul 20, 2012, 6:47 PM EDT

Courtney Lee, Paul George AP

We told you a couple days ago that Boston had reached a sign-and-trade deal to get Courtney Lee from the Rockets — and that is a beautiful fit for Boston. They get a guy who can defend on the perimeter, knock down threes and come off the bench. A defensively better version of Ray Allen.

But before it got finalized the rest of the deal got more complex and now has three teams in play. Let’s spell it out for you.

The Rockets receive forward JaJuan Johnson (who reportedly is so ticked about the move he has threatened not to report), guard E’Twaun Moore (who is rumored to be in a second trade to Chicago), big man Sean Williams and Charlotte’s second-round pick in next year’s draft (which Boston had the rights to).

Boston also will send swingman Sasha Pavlovic to Portland and Houston gets the rights to guard Job Diebler from Portland.

Yes, it got a tad more complex.

And Boston gave up a fair amount in this deal, but they are in win now mode after bringing Kevin Garnett back and Lee fits into this. By brining back KG, re-signing Brandon Bass, getting Jason Terry and moves like this, the Celtics had a good summer. They got better.

A little big early to raise Banner #18 but how can you not like these moves?

They certainly gave up a lot of “maybe’s” in exchange for a proven NBA contributor, but I’ll take that every time.

Whoever winds up with Moore may be pleasantly surprised. The rest I wouldn’t hold my breath on.

The bottom line is the Celtics needed to get younger and deeper this offseason and they did that, upgrading Tay Allen’s position and then some. They might even get some quality minutes from a rookie this season.

    Whats a Job Diebler?

Reportedly the deal was about to fall apart but the Blazers stepped in to save the trade just to spite the Timberwolves. Because had Courtney Lee not gone to the Celtics the Wolves were also interested, because the Blazers and Wolves are in a feud over Batum right now haha

Its kind of funny. If your an agent for a free agent, make sure to mention that the Timberwolves are very interested in your guy, and watch Portland fall over themselves to drive up the market.

JaJuan Johnson doesn’t want to report? Have fun playing in Europe then buddy!

Not sure what Johnson is so upset about. He would’ve been buried on a Celtics bench. It’s not like he’s going to Charlotte. Houston is a good place to be and might get some more opportunities to develop on a weaker, younger team.

Who does JaJaun think he is? He is about to be waived or traded to Orlando as unguaranteed filler.

Get over yourself. It’s a business.

That 2nd round Charlotte pick is all Houston needed to accommodate a S&T for a player they couldn’t afford to keep. Boston wins. Houston wins.

Nothing wrong with a trade that helps both teams – in this case maybe more than two games as Moore shows some promise.

    Great get for the C’s.

I completely forgot the C’s still had pavlovic, but I will never forget those couple of games which he started for them.

They’ve had a pretty good summer, but so did the team that has ended their season the past two years. Next season won’t be any different.

Danny boy, bring in Greg Oden for a looksie. Hes off the sauce now and might play 15 minutes per.

Celtics will hunt for the 1 seed in the east maybe over all.
