Report: Lakers agree to one-year deal with Antawn Jamison

Jul 18, 2012, 4:26 PM EDT

It’s not quite Dwight Howard… actually, he’s nothing like Dwight Howard. Especially if you talk defense.

But it is a better signing than a lot of people realize.

The Lakers have agreed to a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal for 14-year NBA veteran Antawn Jamison, tweets Mark Spears of Yahoo Sports.

Jamison was given a heavy offensive responsibility with a terrible Cavaliers team last season and averaged 17.2 points (on just 40.3 percent shooting) and 6.8 boards a game. He shot 34.1 percent from three, and had a PER of 16.1, above the league average.

This season, he can come in off the bench, play fewer minutes and shoot a higher percentage letting the offense come to him because the Lakers have no shortage of other offensive weapons opposing defense have to account for (Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, and every fourth game Metta World Peace).

The only concern for Lakers fans should be that Jamison is a one-way player any more — the Cavaliers defense got 8 points per 100 possessions better when he sat down last season.

Still, smart pickup by the Lakers. Good veteran player who can help out at an affordable price. The kind of pickup contending teams make.

  3. ljl2 - Jul 18, 2012 at 4:40 PM

Nash and Jamison on the floor together will have to be the definition defensive sucktitude. wow. yeah Jamison can score (when he’s chucking enough shots up) but his defense is atrocious and part of the reason the Cavs caved to Boston and why their defense was so bad the past 2 years. Lakers fans will HATE him.

    • joshm5683 - Jul 18, 2012 at 5:43 PM

Jamison might give up a lot of points. The bench gave up a lot of points last year too, at least now they have a viable scoring option. The bench just kind of needs to keep pace and hold the fort while the starters rest. I like the pick up a lot for the Lakers bench. Its too bad they didn’t also get Grant Hill as well, because that would give them a very solid bench.

      • ljl2 - Jul 18, 2012 at 10:40 PM

Its not that he might give up points, he will. He is playing in a conference that is known for good PF play. He was destroyed by weaker competition last year. His points are not efficient. According to a tweet by Conrad Kaczmarek “over the last 2 seasons, 147 players have 1000+ FGA. Jamison ranks 135th in TS%.” LA can keep that and get that crappy defense and awful offensive decision making away from my young players.

      • cosanostra71 - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:39 PM

Jamison will fill the role that Odom used to on the bench. This will help both Gasol and Bynum. Some of the best Lakers’ lineups are “small-ball” with MWP playing PF next to Gasol or Bynum. Back in the day, they used Odom in that “small-ball” lineup. PJ used to play Odom and Gasol together far more than he did Bynum and Gasol together. There is just too many spacing issues with Gasol and Bynum playing together. This will allow the Lakers to better rotate their bigs.

  4. ccshocktalk - Jul 18, 2012 at 4:44 PM

Another solid pickup…regardless if they get douche howard or not, this team is going to be stronger than it was and shouldn’t have a problem getting to the Finals one more time.

    • kinggw - Jul 18, 2012 at 5:53 PM

Are you serious? A soon to be 39 y/o point guard and 36 y/o reserve forward are going to put the Lake Show over the top?

Those are decent pickups for the Lakers, but are they really going to make a difference? I think some of you get caught up in the big names and forget about their age and/or declining production. The Lakers are steadily getting older and the teams they’re challenging in the West are at the other end of that spectrum. For all of the noise about the Nash move, the Lakers haven’t improved that much for people to expect them to go further than they did last season. Objectivity people.

      • malcom1985 - Jul 18, 2012 at 6:14 PM

Actually, yes it will be a major contribution for the Lakers. The Lakers bench this past season had gone several games scoring less than 10 points combined, and more often than not, multiple players putting up 0 points game after game. The Lakers bench literally had no where to go but up because they were already the worst in the league.

It’s what the Lakers were known for. Big leads, only to squander them due to the bench not being able to play defense or score, and then playing catch up for 10 minutes in the 4th to hopefully stay ahead or get ahead. The major problems with the Lakers last season had almost nothing to do with the starters at all, but that god awful bench. Jamison is a major upgrade for the Lakers. I don’t care if he can’t play defense. If he can score, then great. He’s already a major upgrade over every player on the bench.

      • crtzinc - Jul 18, 2012 at 7:12 PM

Come on man, Nash and Jamison are an upgrade over last years Lakers squad regardless of age. Lakers are adding pieces that more than compliment the existing players to make it easier for everyone. Look at the important stats, Nash still averaged 10.5 assists last year without a 20 point scorer plus he shot better than any Laker from 3. You can speak all you want about defense but we will still have two 7 footers clogging up the lane to at least alter shots. Whether this is enough to get them over the top we will see but I like their chances this year 10x more than last.

  5. chadinkc30 - Jul 18, 2012 at 4:49 PM

    Perfect scoring 6th man!

  6. fordmandalay - Jul 18, 2012 at 4:52 PM

Lakers going to be a beast next year. And they’re not done making deals yet!

    • slopmcflop - Jul 18, 2012 at 5:42 PM

Looking at that roster now, it is kind of scary. I’ve really been impressed with what the Lakers and Mavericks have done this offseason. They both missed out on making a deal for Howard (so far) and the Mavericks missed out on Deron Williams as well, but both managed to piece together some important role players on the cheap. Not to mention the Lakers acquisition of Nash, of course.

  7. bchapman2011 - Jul 18, 2012 at 5:15 PM

Just another piece to the puzzle. Only one more bench player and Howard to go.

  8. oldmanbasketball - Jul 18, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Excellent pick-up; despite their record, enjoyed watching him play with the Cavs.

  9. flyrocket31 - Jul 18, 2012 at 5:47 PM

What is the lakers payroll gonna be for next year!?? They basically signed Nash.

  10. aldavis4president - Jul 18, 2012 at 5:48 PM

Antwan dsnt play defense??! YOU DON’T SAY!! he’s 100yrs old and Waz the 2nd best player on a bad team. On the Lakers he won’t have to play D ..he’s gna b a 6th man and be asked to score, which he obviously can. Great pick up.

    • ljl2 - Jul 18, 2012 at 10:43 PM

He was not the second best player on the Cavs, Varajao was. He was the player who was able to chuck up the most shots in awkward ways with a true shooting percentage under 50% (awful).

      • sguy2130 - Jul 19, 2012 at 10:55 AM

Ditto. Lakers fans may love this on paper, but I don’t think they’ll feel that way for long. They do realize why he was available at the vet minimum right? You can’t just shrug off lack of defense like it’s meaningless either…just wow people.

Jamison typically needs a lot of shots often to get them to finally drop, he’s very streaky. Sure, he’ll have a few solid games for the Lakers, but I don’t see him as a difference maker. He was terrible in the 6th man role when LBJ was still with the Cavs (especially in a Mike Brown “offense”), don’t see him being much different for the Lakers, but who knows.

Low risk at the vet minimum though and solid locker room guy no doubt. Just keep your expectations in check Laker fan, or you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

  11. omniusprime - Jul 18, 2012 at 6:42 PM

Looks like a good short term investment. Antawn Jamison will be a huge improvement over McRoberts or Murphy. Time for the Lakers to dump those two pieces of trash along with Steve Flake. The Lakers still need a good young point guard to back up ancient Steve Nash and Flake isn’t the point guard we’re looking for. Jamison should bring some intensity to the bench which has been too lazy the past two years.

  12. cheers4ablumpkin - Jul 18, 2012 at 6:46 PM

    Yes good pick up

  13. isujames - Jul 18, 2012 at 7:10 PM

And they still won’t beat OKC, and definitely not my Heat.

  14. isujames - Jul 18, 2012 at 7:15 PM

This guy just throws up shots and miraculously, some go in.Good pick up for the lakers, wouldn’t want him on the Heat though.

  15. jammer73 - Jul 18, 2012 at 7:17 PM

Jamison is done. Nothing left in the tank. A bonafide scrub to fill the last DNPCD chair at the end of the bench.

  16. lakerluver - Jul 18, 2012 at 7:21 PM

Instant O off the bench. I’m seeing visions of BANNER NO. 17 hanging from the Staples Center!!

  17. chadinkc30 - Jul 18, 2012 at 7:24 PM

They’ve probably been “your Heat” for what 2 years?

  18. blueblood86 - Jul 18, 2012 at 8:34 PM

    Now let’s get Dwight

  19. progress2011 - Jul 18, 2012 at 8:39 PM

Nash = Will get BLOW-BY every play on defense, against premier guards

Kobe = Living off his defensive reputation but too old to defend top shooting guards, 1 on 1

Jamison = Has NEVER played defense

MWP= Living off his defensive reputation but too old to defend top forwards, 1 on 1

Gasol = Has NEVER played defense

Bynum= 70 year old man knees – too lazy to move his feet

You will NEVER beat San Antonio, The Clippers and DEFINITELY get ran outta the gym against the Thunder !!!

No one on the roster can play D individually and have been too lazy to rotate and help, the past several years…..which is what wins championships !!!

Ahahahahahaha….This is gonna be hilarious too watch !!!

    • sdboltaction - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:10 PM

How did you get past your parent’s internet filter…?

      • progress2011 - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:22 PM

        It wasn’t my parents internet…it was yo momma’s !

Plus you should stop worrying about what I’m doing to yo momma and worry about what teams are gonna do to your fakers inability to stop anybody !!!

Instead of asking child like questions, that have no relevance to bball…respond to my post and how no one on your starting 5, are capable of slowing down OKC, that totally throttled your fakers.

Now get away from the door, while I finish up wit yo momma…lil boy !

    • bozosforall - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:18 PM

Too lazy to rotate and help the past several years? Which is what wins championships? You must have been living in a cave the past several years to have missed the Lakers winning championships in 2009 and 2010…not to mention the other three titles that they won this millenium. Name one other team that has done that recently. You can’t…so shut the F up, crybaby. Come back when your team wins even ONE title.

      • progress2011 - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:28 PM

        BOZO !!!

        I said the past several years….not ancient history….BOZO !

        1. Dallas embarrassed your fakers and swept you, last year!

        2. The Thunder throttled you this year and because they are so young, it was like spanking the old teacher…and teaching them a lesson……ahahahahaha

With the roster changes you are making, I will be crying from laughing so hard again this bball season, when ya’ll get thrashed, in the 1st round this year …..ahahahahaha !!!

      • bozosforall - Jul 22, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Past several years includes the last two titles that the Lakers won…or can’t you count, laughing idiot?

  20. BigBeachBall - Jul 18, 2012 at 8:43 PM

Didn’t Jamison play under mike brown already?
probably a big reason Jamison accepted nothing to play in LA.

  21. diablito0402 - Jul 18, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Your heat got lucky to get out of the east with rose hurt howard hurt the celtics banged up , this year will be different, it the heats turn to get to the playoffs with wade or lbj with a major injury..

    • progress2011 - Jul 18, 2012 at 9:49 PM

      UMMMM diaper0402….

This article “IS NOT” about the Heat and them getting outta the East !

This is about your fakers picking up 2 dudes (Nash and Jamerson) who are too old and slow to compete in the West!

Did you see how easlily the Thunder WAXED the fakers this year !

What have you done to compete or change your fortunes against the Thunder !!!

Westbrook may go for 50 EVERYNIGHT against Nash !

Harden is gonna ABUSE Jamerson off the bench too……That’s what this article is about !

      • bozosforall - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:10 PM

Too bad your team will go ringless once it s all said and done…while the Lakers have already on FIVE his millennium alone.

Jealous is all you are, nothing more.

      • progress2011 - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:34 PM

        BOZO !!!

Why would I be jealous….when the fakers have been embarrased the past 2 years !

This coming year will make 3 years in a row, I get to enjoy watching the fakers get ran outta the gym !!!!

I just purchased a new recliner. Went to costco and purchased a years supply of popcorn….I wish the season could start tomorrow ….cause I already got a years supply of salt to rub in your gaping wounds…as you continue to cry because the fakers are losers ….ahahahahaha !!!

      • loungefly74 - Jul 19, 2012 at 2:28 PM

holy crap…i just laugh every time i see a Progress2011 posting. they are completely ridiculous but they are funny…you remind me of “the unknown comic”…the guy who wore a bag over his head with his swarmy comments in the 80’s. yeah…i also love how he changes the poster’s names (for example, i’m “maggotfly”) aahahaha! thanks for the laughs man. i really appreciate it. oh man…diaper0402….instead of diablito0402? ahahahahah!

      • progress2011 - Jul 19, 2012 at 4:42 PM

      • sdboltaction - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:12 PM

You guys meeting by the swings after school?

  23. chadinkc30 - Jul 18, 2012 at 10:00 PM

What did OKC do to get better this offseason? Nash & Jamison both make the Lakers better, you obviously are a hater if u can’t even admit that

    • progress2011 - Jul 18, 2012 at 10:10 PM

OKC is one of the youngest teams in the league. You ask, ” what did they do to get better this offseason” ….

      1. They got a year older, since they are so young, that’s a good thing.

      2. One more year of experience, beating every elite team in the West…including your fakers

      3. A Championship run, which builds character and additional experience of what it will take to return to the Championships.

      4. They re-signed their young coach, which will continue to build their dominance in the West.

You obviously are mentally deprived of oxygen, have fallen, bumped your head and can’t get up…. if you can’t comprehend that !

      • smoothaswilkes - Jul 18, 2012 at 10:45 PM

not sure why you keep calling them the “fakers”. last i checked the score was 16-2. and while 2 banners is nice for an expansion team, don’t forget who runs your team. if you just jumped on the bandwagon, it’s Pat Riley. if you need more schooling, he has 4 rings as a coach and 1 as a player for, you guessed it, the Los Angeles Lakers.

so while fakers may rhyme, the heat are actually the fakers in this situation. actually, imitators since Riley is just reproducing what he learned in LA.

      • progress2011 - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:49 PM

They are “FAKERS” because they are in the city where everything is plastic !!!!

        1. Plastic people – EVERY woman there has “ATLEAST” one plastic body part !

        2. FAKE people – EVERYONE from the dude cleaning the toilets at the staples center to the baggage clerk at the airport, is supposedly working on a movie, a modeling contract or name dropping about a celebrity they ” SUPPOSEDLY” know or are a relative of.

        3. Fake economy – EVERYTHING is so overpriced, as if tourists should willingly want to pay 3 times the value for everything…..especially since 3 cities have filed for bankruptcy this summer and the state is essentially bankrupt….they should pay me for visiting the crime capital.

        4. L.A. is the home of M.C. hammer and those infamous M.C. Hammer baggy pants….if that’s not the definition of FAKE…..nothing is !!!!ahahahahaha

        later FAKER !!!!

  24. isujames - Jul 18, 2012 at 10:18 PM

Yes I am a laker hater wouldn’t like anymore if my favorite current player went to play for them.

    • smoothaswilkes - Jul 18, 2012 at 10:37 PM

Are you able to put one sentence together that actually makes sense?

  25. ljl2 - Jul 18, 2012 at 10:41 PM

Apparently, Lakers fans have been trolling everyone who pointed out how bad Jamison has been the past few years.

    • bozosforall - Jul 18, 2012 at 11:05 PM

The only ones that I see trolling here are the Laker haters.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Jul 19, 2012 at 9:30 AM

How is bozo making comments that aren’t overtly derogatory toward the city of Boston?

      • bozosforall - Jul 20, 2012 at 1:04 AM

How are you even functioning without a brain?

      • drmonkeyarmy - Jul 20, 2012 at 1:45 AM

It’s difficult sometimes. I manage okay though. It wasn’t meant as a criticism…more of a surprise. I don’t mind the Boston hate.

      • bozosforall - Jul 20, 2012 at 2:07 AM

You shouldn’t…given the fact that New Englanders have been hating on the Yankees going on a hundred years now.

    • loungefly74 - Jul 19, 2012 at 3:26 PM

i think jamison was a horrible player when he was to be the #1 or #2 option…but as a bench player? he is great.
