Report: Lakers near deal with Jamison, GM Kupchak denies it

Jul 17, 2012, 12:06 PM EST

Antawn Jamison

So, who you going to believe?

On one hand, we have about every source in the universe saying Antwan Jamison signing with the Lakers is very close to being done. The Charlotte Observer had it first but the story has been echoed elsewhere.

On the other side, there is Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak admitting that they talked to Jamison but adding this to Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com.

“We’re not about to do anything,” Kupchak told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “I would know.”

It’s in Kupchak’s best interest to play things close to the vest here. Also, Jamison is a North Carolina guy and so you can guess where the Charlotte Observer’s sources are. Smart money says Jamison thinks the deal is done but Kupchak is trying to keep his options open. I also bet it gets done in the next 48 hours or so.

Kupchak also has said that all the Lakers deals from here on out will be for the veteran’s minimum, so the money here is not in question.

Two men who both scored 51 on each other are now joining the same forces.

Thanks to their agent Rob Pelinka!!!

This would be a fantastic signing, a big upgrade to the lousy bench.

Good signing. Jamison can still score and strengthens the bench. Looks like Grant Hill is headed to “the other” L.A. team. If it came down to a decision between the two players, I’m glad the LAKERS are choosing Jamison. At this stage of their careers he is the better player.

Who said Hill was going to the Clippers? Last I heard, the Clippers were interested in him, but he was leaning towards the Lakers. Lakers are still in need of a small forward despite getting Jamison.

everyone has said Hill is going to the Clippers.

Im pretty sure they have come to terms already.

Looks like LA will become another “Team Geritol” for the upcoming season…

This would bother me before, but now I don’t care if there are 10 “super teams”, as long as the heat never win again.

I dont care how old Jamison is. He’s been consistent even in the ladder part of his career and gives the lakers some sorely needed 3 pt shooting/bench help. Lakers had such a horrible bench.

hey! gotta love the potential Jamison signing. as said by others on here, the guy can score, create his own shot, and would be a big welcomed addition to the bench! i hope its for the right price though.
    Lakers = improving

At least Antawn Jamison is younger than ancient Grant Over-the-Hill. If Jamison can bring some of his excitement to the laid back Laker team then maybe this is a good fit. If Jamison settles for the veteran minimum then this will be a good deal. Now to see which deadbeat forward the Lakers eject, Murphy or McRoberts.
