Well, hey, the good news is that no one drives in New York.

Patch.com out of South Hampton reports that Knicks PG Jason Kidd was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of drunk driving.

Details are still emerging, but Southampton Town police confirmed that the basketball star was arrested during the midnight shift.

Kidd, 39, was arraigned on a misdemeanor DWI charge on Sunday morning in Southampton Town Justice Court and released on his own recognizance.

At least no one was hurt.

I’m not going to go down any sort of road of assumptions or conclusions. This happens all the time, and I’m not talking about athletes. This happens every day to normal people who made as simple mistake of thinking they could drive when they couldn’t. It’s a severe mistake, and needs to be dealt with, by Kidd and our society, but getting on a high horse isn’t going to do anyone any good. It just happens to be our standard operating procedure.

But for the Knicks, they may have lost Jeremy Lin and had the new free agent arrested on drunk driving. Not the best weekend to be a fan of the blue and orange.

His wife is going to be pissed.

    • elComandanteenJefe - Jul 15, 2012 at 7:57 PM

And if history is any indication, he will be smacking the pissed out of her.

    • saint1997 - Jul 16, 2012 at 2:53 AM

I’m pretty sure he is the one who is pissed

  2. cakemixa - Jul 15, 2012 at 12:59 PM

I’d drink if I had to play for the Knicks, too.

    • spellingcopfather - Jul 15, 2012 at 1:11 PM

So what team you play for now???

  3. backdraft440 - Jul 15, 2012 at 2:02 PM

Sounds like the Jason Kidd of old, now he just needs to start beating his wife again.

    • knightrider1755 - Jul 15, 2012 at 2:18 PM

That will be his next arrest.

“simple mistake of thinking they could drive when they couldn’t.”

Is the mistake equally as “simple” when you drive into another car instead of a tree? Any time you’re so incapable of controlling a mass of metal the size of an Escalade that you can’t keep it on the road and out of the woods, you’re making a VERY SERIOUS mistake.

It “happens all the time?” A lot of evil happens all the time.

    • mytthor - Jul 16, 2012 at 3:04 AM

Evil? What is this, He-Man? The guy drove drunk. It’s dumb, but evil?

  5. detroit20iron - Jul 15, 2012 at 3:26 PM

    Lol

  6. jshipolito - Jul 15, 2012 at 3:43 PM

    Welcome to New York moron.

  7. vikesfansteve - Jul 15, 2012 at 4:47 PM

He just doesn’t beat his wife, he was also nailed for smacking around a girl at his birthday party back in the early 90′s. People forget how he sideswiped a car back in 94 then ran away while he left his 2 buddies behind in the car. The dude is a drunk & a terrible driver & a woman beater.

  8. sabatimus - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:00 PM

Why is DWI ever a misdemeanor?

    • icdogg - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:46 PM

When I started driving the legal limit was almost twice what it is now. It was .15… A cop banged on my car window once when I was snoozing with my car on the shoulder of the road and I had to take a drunk test and blew a .14. Cop told me to move to a better spot to take a nap.

I don’t bring this up because I’m in any way proud of this, but just that the culture has changed a huge amount about drunk driving since the 1970s. Nowadays if I did that I’d be locked up and in a lot of trouble.

      • sabatimus - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:07 PM

If you’re sleeping off a drunk in your car on the side of the road (parked legally, that is), why should the cops care?

      • woodyqq2 - Jul 15, 2012 at 8:08 PM

Uhhh, Cuz you drove to get there, under the influence and you may wake up and drive away. Under the influence.

  9. 28loose - Jul 15, 2012 at 7:51 PM

Because you are in the public and you are intoxicated.

  10. brenenostler - Jul 15, 2012 at 8:30 PM

Society sees people like him get arrested for DWI and get off easy, so it makes a lot of people think that drinking and driving isn’t a severe problem.

This guy needs to be punished as if he were a normal citizen and maybe everyone else will get the point.

  11. yankees177 - Jul 15, 2012 at 9:02 PM

I got a dui about 4 years ago. Worst time of my life hands down. If your not an asshole and have no priors youll get a fine, and have to take some classes. I dont know why he has to be “punished” and this penalty wont suffice for him. He made a mistake and nobody got hurt(thank god). Get off your soapbox. If he does it again then hes a scumbag who deserves some jailtime because he needs extra motivation, but until then step off your boxes and chill out.

    • vikesfansteve - Jul 15, 2012 at 9:50 PM

      Genius,

He already did it in 1994. He sideswiped a car, flipped his SUV then ran away. Then he blamed the woman who he got pregnant at age 20 for buying him drinks but just one.
He also hit a girl at his birthday party that year. Then he beat his wife a couple years back.

The dude is a scum bag.

  13. jlinfan7 - Jul 15, 2012 at 9:46 PM

Maybe Jeremy Lin should be mentoring him.

  14. nokoolaidcowboy - Jul 15, 2012 at 10:02 PM

    Stupid.

  15. cornbreadbbqred - Jul 15, 2012 at 10:02 PM

Tee-hee! Did anybody check his trunk? You sure he wasn’t riding dirty with his wife beat up and stuffed in the trunk for the ride home from the party? Just sayin….

  16. rob0527 - Jul 15, 2012 at 10:48 PM

Bad decision, but the roads out in the hamptons are tricky, and poles just jump out in front of you. Lol.

  17. badintent - Jul 16, 2012 at 12:21 AM

Children, it’s .05 here in Vancouver ! That means ONE Drink you blow .05 if you weigh 200 pounds and less with no prior food in your tummy. Comprede ? So the DUI laws are made to order for the Lawyers to make more $$$ ! Sabe ? Lawyers are a disease. And as for his ex-wife beating, she was know to have plan to provoke him to her so she could collect $ millions on a divorce. She ‘s a hoop hoe. So get off Jason ‘s case and go look in the mirror before you point fingers.

    • mytthor - Jul 16, 2012 at 3:02 AM

Look in the mirror? Are you suggesting that I am a gold digger after Jason Kidd’s money, that I am a DUI lawyer out to make money, or that I created the Vancouver laws? Just want to know what I should work on.

      • badintent - Jul 16, 2012 at 3:18 AM

The law board worked with MADD and the Province government to drop the DUI threshold from 08 to .05 after our stupid Premier got busted in Maui with some Tequila Sunrises . too many sunrises. So now one drink and your car is towed and impounded for a week with storage fees ( $300) , taxi is about $50, ticket is $ 500, court costs are $1000, your ambulance chaser fees are $3000 and you get 4 points on your license for 10 years. You lose your license for 3 months( bus, taxis rent -a-car costs, etc.And with no property damage or injuries involved either For a first time offense !! Work on that. Then we can do the Gloria Allred angle. Don’t bother billing me for lunch or bathroom time either. IF ya are also a gold digger, then go on SugarDaddys.com, troll there.Look in the mirror, it’s cracked !

    • cullenand99 - Jul 16, 2012 at 3:49 AM

You’re telling other people to take a look in the mirror? YOU’RE the one sticking up a for a woman beater. I don’t care if she provoked him or not, no man should ever hit a girl. I think YOU should be the one taking a look in the mirror, boy.

  18. cornbreadbbqred - Jul 16, 2012 at 9:15 AM

    Way to go Jason, nice.

Kidd brings his brand of leadership and pizazz to Manhattan!
