Report: Top 5 picks Barnes, Kidd-Gilchrist want to avoid Sacramento

Jun 27, 2012, 3:21 PM EDT

North Carolina Tar Heels forward Harrison Barnes slaps hands with teammate Stilman White in the first half against the Kansas Jayhawks in their men's NCAA Midwest Regional basketball game in St. Louis Reuters

There is a lot of jockeying at the top of the NBA draft board… well, not the very top. Anthony Davis is a lock.

But from pick No. 2 on down there are a handful of players that teams like and a more teams trying to get into position to pick them. Will Cleveland jump up to No. 2 to get Bradley Beal? What will the Wizards to at No. 3?

It likely shakes out like this — North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes and Kentucky’s Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will go fourth (currently Cleveland’s pick) and fifth (currently Sacramento) in some order. Which led to this little note in Chad Ford’s latest mock draft at ESPN.

Both guys desperately don’t want to go to Sacramento.

It is kind of moot for these guys, they have no choice on where they land. If one gets picked by Sacramento they will deny any report they didn’t want to go there and express how much they love to walk around Old Sacramento.

But if they feel that way, what are free agents saying?

The Raptors will gladly take either player off your hands, Sacramento.

  2. lawful1 - Jun 27, 2012 at 3:28 PM

the maloof brother should retire, and leave sports to the professionals.

    • knightrider1755 - Jun 27, 2012 at 3:46 PM

They are busy looking for another location to move this team to. If it happens, it will be their fifth move since they’ve been in the league. From Rochester, NY to Cincinnati to Kansas City-Omaha to just Kansas City to Sacramento and perhaps coming to a city near you……..check your newspapers for times and listings.

“But if they feel that way, what are free agents saying?”

Uhh, how about try and rise above the nonsense Kurt. That IS WHAT THE AGENTS ARE SAYING. The players did not say that.

Chad Ford is a #$%$ idiot

You need to take your own advice, you “trickybastard”.

      • trickybastard - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:17 PM

i do in my day job. i’m not getting paid to post misinformation on a blog. consider it a service to you PERSONALLY that i corrected your dear friend kurt and his erroneous information. you don’t have to thank me

      • b7p19 - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:33 PM

OK, thanks for the thought, but what exactly did you correct?

  4. pmd5319 - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:09 PM

You would think that these guys would just be happy to reach the highest level of their profession. Guys should just be happy they are in the league. Go to Sac, take advantage of getting lots of minutes on a bad team, develop your game, and, after your rookie deal, go wherever your heart desires. These guys are 19 years old. After their rookie deal, they will be under 25. As a developing player, it’s better to get minutes on a bad team than ride the bench for a good one.

    • lawful1 - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:32 PM

I disagree, I would not want to be drated by jerks that try to sheft everybody they can, so I would avoid them too. That is like saying be and marry the first girl that wants you, even though she cant cook, wont work, a gold digger, still goes out with pooh bear, and looks like Ru Paul. Come on now thats just stupid. The Maloofs arent trying to build a quality team and have shown themselves to be untrustworthy and non quality owners, I cant blame them.

      • b7p19 - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:35 PM

Yeah, it’s not a great situation in Sac right now. I would agree with pmd normally, but I wouldn’t want anything to do with the Kings either.

      • pmd5319 - Jun 27, 2012 at 5:39 PM

Ok, a few things… First, I don’t know if I would compare a 4 year contract where you get paid millions of dollars to play a game to a “life long pledge of love to another person” like marriage. Secondly, if they do get drafted by the Kings, they have the option to not sign, sit out, and go earn money playing in Europe. They can enter the draft again after that. Bottomline is they are getting paid millions, that’s alot. It’s not like the Maloofs are going to force them into murdering someone, I don’t think atleast. There’s alot of people who work for “untrustworthy and non-quality” bosses for a fraction of what these guys will get. I don’t know why it’s “stupid” for me to suggest that these guys can’t suck it up for a few years, get paid, improve their game and move on. It’s such a tradgedy that these guys will earn boat loads of cash for a few years to play ball. Maloofs are bad owners, but they also didn’t get accused, and lose, racial discrimination lawsuit (Sterling). If they are jerks, so what? Suck it up and play.

  5. someidiotfromouthereintheprojects - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:47 PM

you can’t blame them. sacramento seems like a great city and place to live, but the ownership and basketball culture there are atrocious. these kids are coming out of 2 of the biggest basketball dynasties in the world where every year it is championship or bust.

they deserve better, and frankly so do the sacramento fans.

  6. 49erminer4life - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:47 PM

I wouldn’t want to either. Maloofs are idiots that dont care to much about winning or the fans & I disagree wit that comment, its better to get alot of minutes on a bad team, instead of a no minutes on a good team. Thats why t.evans is still in rookie mode. How can you get better going against d.greene & f.garcia everyday in practice.

  7. birdsflynorth206 - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:57 PM

Sucks for them because if one of them is available at 5 and the kings haven’t traded that pick they will be selected by them

  8. lakerluver - Jun 27, 2012 at 5:54 PM

Doesn’t “everyone” want to avoid Sacramento?! Who wants to have to avoid stepping in cow manure every place they go?

    • 1historian - Jun 27, 2012 at 10:36 PM

I read the 1st sentence and was gonna go thumbs down

Then I read the 2nd sentence and was gonna go thumbs up

      decisions, decisions

  9. d7986 - Jun 27, 2012 at 6:11 PM

Kings should trade Kidd-Gilchrist/Barnes and Tyeke Evans for Pau Gasol.

  10. jengibre23 - Jun 27, 2012 at 10:02 PM

Then pick lillard from weber state. I don’t blame them. They really have nothing going on in Sacramento. Hows tyreke and Demarcus? They were supposed to be all-stars and all pros by now but that hasn’t happened.

    • sasquash20 - Jun 28, 2012 at 12:44 AM

Cousins is 21. He averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds a game last season. He is going to be a stud as he matures and gets more minutes. He should have been the number 1 pick that year.

Evans can do it all, just not very good. Needs to work on his jump shot, and his handle on the ball. I would try and move him.

  11. mcjon22 - Jun 27, 2012 at 11:59 PM

Who says you need a 4 year college degree to be educated? These guys are sharp!

  12. 1historian - Jun 28, 2012 at 7:13 AM

suggestion to them if either is selected by Sacramento – stfu about how you REALLY feel, state how you were misquoted and how DEElighted you are at having the chance to PLAY in Sacramento, and then spend the next 4 years or so learning the fine points of your craft and then go somewhere else.

IOW – Act like a man. A man who is getting something like $4.5 mil per YEAR to play a game.
