Report: Lakers working hard to shop Pau Gasol

Jun 18, 2012, 9:12 AM EDT

Pau Gasol AP

I would take this with a grain of salt, but the report from Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News confirms the long-standing rumors that Pau Gasol is on the block.

The Lakers are committed to moving Pau Gasol — the fall guy for their second-round ouster against the Thunder and previous playoff failures — even if they have to take back less talent.

Of course they will take back less talent. Say what you want about Gasol being soft — something I don’t buy, he wasn’t soft in the 2009 finals when he bodied up and outplayed Dwight Howard — the guy is the most skilled big man in the post in the game right now. He struggled this season because Mike Brown kicked him out of the post and gave that space to Andrew Bynum. And sometimes Kobe Bryant. And even occasionally Metta World Peace. Brown had Gasol as a facilitator at the elbow, then people are somehow shocked Gasol doesn’t score as much and wasn’t as efficient.

When you trade a guy like Gasol, you never get back equal talent.

In spite of that, I have said the Lakers need to move one of their bigs to make the necessary roster changes to compete for a title. It’s not ideal, but with Kobe alone making $27 million next season (and $30 million the year after that) it is the only way to get the missing pieces, or at least come close. This latest rumor seems to confirm it. Although Lawrence then suggests Gasol could go back to Memphis, that’s not happening. The Lakers don’t need Rudy Gay.

Owned? How old are you? Jesus.
Owned? How do you reach that conclusion? He’s saying because it has happened in the past it will happen again, damn the differences in the league from now to then?
Owned? That you guys can’t see that that was a horribly on sided trade and that West was the common denominator between the teams smacks of either being really dumb or an out and out Lakers homer.
Owned. Jesus, shouldn’t you be in summer school or being cut from your little league team right about now?
What kind of an adult uses the word owned?
Watch and see. There will be no major trade that will net the Lakers a superstar.
The days of the NBA serving up players to la is over. Get used to the mediocrity, its here to stay for the Lakers.

well sir, it looks like you were dead wrong about the major trade that will net the Lakers a superstar … the major trades netted the Lakers TWO superstars! so I guess you could say …

holy crap, just because you think adults don’t use the word “owned” … in fact, you YOURSELF used it 5, count it – FIVE times ! the word you’re thinking of, by the way, is more commonly written as “pw3ned …”

I just looked. and I can’t find anywhere where cp3 said he’d “love” to play with Kobe. he said they’d be deadly, big difference. with Kobes little man syndrome comment, I’m sure that would change.
Gasol career- 13.1 ppg, 8.1 rpg and 1.5 bpg are hardly all star numbers. Hence working to develop.
Again, the Lakers are not going to be gifted #1 overall picks like in the past, ala worthy and Johnson.
They also aren’t going to get sweetheart trades like Jabbar and Gasol.
Those days are over, see Paul trade nixed for example. They can’t just go throw money at things anymore either.
Stern wants parity, his stated goal is a star in every city. zThe heat are the last of the big 3. The sooner you get that, the better off you’ll be.

Trading Gasol would be NUTS! – They need to let Howard back up Gasol – Put Gasol back in the post and abandoned that Princeton offensive with the personal you have. Gasol is a great passer in the post and can get everyone else involved and if Howard backs him up this first year – he will be a much better player down the road because of it – I agree that Gasol ate Howard’s lunch in the finals –
he is a better skilled player..
