Honest question, why is Bill Laimbeer never considered?

• Gritty Player
• High B-Ball IQ
• Champion Player
• Champion Coach. NBA and WBNA are different animals but it's still winning on a high level.

He was a bit of an a-hole/tuff player but so were Oakley, Ewing, etc.... love them on your team, hate them if not.

A hard nose guy with the history to back what he teaches.

Sad to say the Knicks fans were even ruder to Ewing during his tenure in NY. He was constantly booed whenever he took the floor and blasted if he dared miss a shot. If he was ever rude to the fans it was in response to how he was treated here. As a native NYer, I remember that period all to well. As rambunctious and obscene as Knicks fans can be, it was never my thing to approve of such ill-behaved conduct. He deserved respect for helping to at least put a perennial losing team back into the spotlight. For that, he was never brought back not even as an assistant coach. Instead the Knicks hired Herb Williams, a company man, who seems to stick like teflon and remains even after head coaches and their staffs have come and gone. I have nothing against Herb, we share the same alma mater, but he is NO Patrick Ewing. A testament of how effective he has been as a defensive coach is proven by the hiring of Woodson. Patrick deserves a shot and I am certain he will get one in spite of how Knicks fans and the Knicks organization feel about it.

"Ewing deserves a shot soon."

I agree Ewing having put in time as an assistant really should count for something since so many former players get head coaching jobs with absolutely no experience. But, in reality, I have no clue whether Ewing can coach or not. Assistants in the NBA run the gamut from being the brains behind the figurehead to being just figureheads themselves. Ewing's main claim to fame as a coach has been working with Dwight Howard...but Howard's turned into a basket case over the past couple years. Would things be worse without Ewing or better?

Why, exactly, does Ewing deserve a shot? If what many front office people say is true -- that coaching is more about managing people than anything else -- what makes anyone think Ewing will excel at this? He was a great, hard working player, and I'm a Knick fan, so this is not meant with any bitterness toward Ewing, but he's been a surly dude for the entirety of his 30 years on the national scene. Stories are constantly emerging about his rudeness to fans, reluctance to accept coaching that took him out of his comfort zone, and let's not forget his big, selfish pout that drove the Knicks to make the first of a decade's worth of cap crippling transactions so they could accommodate his wish to get out of New York. Why do we think any franchise should hire that guy as its head coach?
