Odom showed up in poor physical and mental condition to play basketball. The Mavericks repeatedly attempted to get him to buy into a system and act like a professional. Odom repeatedly refused to do so. The Mavericks used both positive reinforcement (watch ANY Carlisle interview from before Valentine’s day) and negative reinforcement (D-League); neither of which were successful.

Odom routinely showed up late for practices, meetings and games – sometimes not showing up at all. He got into multiple shouting matches with teammates, coaches and, finally, the owner. His teammates voted UNANIMOUSLY to withhold his playoff share (about $20K) and donate it to charity.

There is no basis for your assertion he is “a genuinely nice guy” – however, there is plenty for the basis that he cannot conduct himself as a professional.

None of the meat-receptacles spewing their digitalized toxic hate on this or any other forum knows what it was like to be Lamar Odom this past year. If it is the perception of big-money for nothing that leads to this animosity, so be it; I can think of many other targets for the bitterness who earn even more money and cause a heck of a lot more direct damage to our society. Odom, at least, is a genuinely nice guy who isn’t out to hurt anyone.

For those who harp on the “reality” business: Turn off your TVs, man! You don’t have to watch that crap. I’d say it wasn’t made for you, but you make it for you by default. Who’s more pathetic in that regard?

I wish him health and happiness with both what it left of his professional life, and for his personal life beyond that.
