Metta World Peace suspended seven games for elbow to Harden

Apr 24, 2012, 7:59 PM EDT

UPDATE 10:06 pm: Metta World Peace issued his own statement on his Web site (coincidentally named RonArtest.com):

“I apologize to the Oklahoma City Thunder fans and the OKC organization. I look forward to getting back on the floor with my teammates and competing for the Lakers fans.”

7:59 pm: The NBA came down fairly hard on Metta World Peace — not as hard as some had hoped, but more than fellow Laker Andrew Bynum got for laying out J.J. Barea in the playoffs — with a seven game suspension for his deliberate elbow to the head of James Harden of the Thunder Sunday.

The Lakers have one game left in the regular season (Thursday against the Kings) so this means World Peace will sit the first six Lakers playoff games. That likely means the entire first round and could go into the second round if the Lakers advance.

“The concussion suffered by James Harden demonstrates the danger posed by violent acts of this kind, particularly when they are directed at the head area,” NBA Commissioner David Stern said. “We remain committed to taking necessary measures to protect the safety of NBA players, including the imposition of appropriate penalties for players with a history of on-court altercations.”

“Metta has for the most part been a model citizen both on and off the court since joining the Lakers,” said Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak in a released statement. “Still, his most recent lapse in judgement is not to be condoned or accepted. His actions could have seriously injured another player, and his absence during this suspension will hurt our team as well. While we accept the league’s decision, we will will be supportive of Metta and try to help him be more professional on the court.”

For comparison, Bynum got five games for his hit on J.J. Barea in the playoffs and Delonte West got 10 games for his weapons charges away from the game. The longest recent suspension was to Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton for bringing weapons into the Wizards locker room.

Harden has not yet been cleared to play following concussion symptoms and is out for the Thunder Tuesday night. However, he is expected to be able to play in the playoffs starting this weekend.

    • mlblogscubfanbudman621 - Apr 25, 2012 at 9:18 AM

sounds like another dumb Nug, mis-information…He was 17! who was suspended several times, some for being on DRUGS! I say “STAND YOUR GROUND” and shoot first, ask questions later…

There are a few people in Seattle who are hoping for a return of the NBA. I’m not one of them. To me, thugs and future thugs like Artest and Tu Holloway personify what the NBA is all about. We don’t need any of that here in the Northwest. Just give me an afternoon sitting in the Athenian Cafe, sipping my Ballard Bitters, munching on fish and chips, and watching the ferries roll across Elliott Bay. Keep your NBA hooligans in Detroit where they belong.

    • progress2011 - Apr 25, 2012 at 5:45 AM

WOW…with an attitude like that, you are obviously a transplant, to the Seattle area. No one, born and raised in Seattle has such hostility.

You are probably one of the hooligans you speak of, relocated from Detroit.

Unemployment is very high in the N.W.

Return of the NBA to the Great N.W. will infuse the area with hundreds of jobs and all the local businesses will profit….housing, car dealerships, retail stores, restaurants ….to include the cafe, where you sip your beverage.

The cafe would probably ask you to leave, to make room for one of the NBA players.

    • seattlerogueburner - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:03 AM

You’re not welcome in our city anymore. Please pack up and move down to SF with the rest of the snoots.

Don’t worry, we’ll pack you up some fish n chips to go.

    • 24thesho - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:08 AM

He played for the Indiana Pacers, you f%^&ing idiot! Seattle is a closet racist city, anyway.

    • 24thesho - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:08 AM

He played for the Indiana Pacers, you f%^&ing idiot!

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Apr 25, 2012 at 8:28 AM

      Tu Holloway though?

  5. leeann10 - Apr 24, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Since Ron Artest indicated the vicious ellbow was not intentional because he didn’t see who was there, he just knew someone was close….what crap! If he didn’t see, what if he had elbowed Kobe in the head? Artest would still be suspended this time next year. So, does Stern feel Harden of the Thunder isn’t as important as a Laker? 7 games is not enough for Artest if Harden has to miss more than 7 games with an intentional hit that could have caused a season ending concussion.

    • chuckj1234 - Apr 25, 2012 at 10:57 PM

I don’t think they call fouls when it is against your own team. You might want to rethink that.

  6. nightrain42 - Apr 24, 2012 at 10:41 PM

sdb74….again…ur crazy. If he played for anyone but the Lakers his suspension wldve been shorter. As stated earlier…CP3 isn’t a Laker cuz if stern. If he was pro Laker…..that trade wld not hve been vetoed. Rationalize that one!

  7. 06mustang - Apr 24, 2012 at 10:45 PM

Wow, how low has the NBA sunk to. Used to be a time when players were looked up to and set a good example for the communites they represented. Now they don’t give a rip what name is on their uniform, just as long as the check is cashed. There was a time that I loved the NBA (Blazers)
But with all those gangstas playing the game now I have no interest. Weapons? Poor sportsmanship? Bling Bling?

What a bunch of crap F@@k the NBA

    • tundra11 - Apr 24, 2012 at 10:53 PM

The NBA should change it’s name to the GBA…Gangsta Basketball Association. The NBA we grew up with is gone. It’s all about tattoos and thugs that have no respect for each other, much less the game. Artest has been suspended 14 times…but the Lakers will welcome him back with open arms. What a shame.

      • Kurt Helin - Apr 25, 2012 at 12:29 AM

I would say for the record that the game is less physical now than it was at maybe any point in the history of the NBA.

      • seth1975 - Apr 25, 2012 at 4:53 AM

In the 80′s McHale clotheslined Rambis and didn’t even have to leave the game. The game is actually girlyfied now compared to the past.

      • 24thesho - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:14 AM

I guess you weren’t around in the late 70s and early 80s; the only thing that has changed is the music and maybe the players are drafted younger. It was way more physical back then. You have no idea what you’re writing about.

    • drmyk - Apr 25, 2012 at 2:20 AM

Yes…your portland jailblazers were the model by which franchises should demonstrate good sportsmanship.

    • progress2011 - Apr 25, 2012 at 5:56 AM

06mustang & tundra11 obviously have other issues, not basketball related but more cynical in nature.

With their reference to slang terms….we all know what you are !

I totally dislike the lakers and un-sportsmanlike behavior. I believe Ron Artest / MWP, should be suspended for the season.

But if you ever watched bball in the 80′s (Bird,Magic, Kareem, Detroit Bad-Boy era ) you would know, that would have been a simple foul, maybe a technical but nothing more.

Since both of you dislike the NBA, hopefully you won’t grace us with anymore of your divisive comments.

We all know what you are !

  8. itsmammoth - Apr 24, 2012 at 11:00 PM

Wow. Funny, because Harden will probably be out just as many games as Artest. That’s golden. What a joke.

    • delius1967 - Apr 25, 2012 at 1:39 AM

Yeah, no kidding. Artest’s suspension should have been “as long as Harden is out, plus seven more games”.

      • wheresdapuck - Apr 25, 2012 at 5:53 AM

        Absolutely!

  9. roseann894 - Apr 24, 2012 at 11:11 PM

Wow, what a class organization. Note the last 2 guys to get suspended for assault on the court were Lakers. On top of that Kobe “never convicted” Bryant and Odom who went into full-pout mode when sent packing from La-La Land (look for him to be back next year to re-join the country club).

  10. chance72 - Apr 24, 2012 at 11:29 PM

good one ron.lets change my name to “world peace”and go out and take a guys head off.i think he should be banned completely.the guys a ticking time bomb.always has been and always will be

  11. miguel3557 - Apr 25, 2012 at 12:17 AM

Artest (I refuse to refer to him by his spectacularly inappropriate chosen name) is a thug, pure and simple. He’s also a liar. He claimed he celebrating his dunk on both Durant and Ibaka, didn’t see Harden, and accidentally hit Harden when he swung his left arm in celebration. That’s BS–the tape showed (1) Durant never got close to Artest, (2) Harden’s left hand was touching the jersey and left arm of Artest, so Artest felt Harden even if he didn’t see him, and (3) he swung his left elbow, where Artest was standing with much greater ferocity that his right elbow. What he did was shed Harden with an elbow that could easily have broken bones on Harden’s face besides causing a bad concussion.

We don’t need to wait until this goon hurts another player like Rudy Tomjanovich was hurt in 1977. Artest has repeatedly shown that he presents a clear danger both to other players and fans. This violent, out-of-control, self-absorbed moron has disgraced himself and should be banned not only from the playoffs but from professional basketball altogether.

A 7-game suspension for this repeat offender only serves to disgrace the NBA itself.

    • sdpaulson - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:59 AM

So what do you expect from the pompus David Stern…….?

      • berbes - Apr 25, 2012 at 9:58 AM

a resignation. then replace him with someone who has the stones to deal with millionaire thug-ballers.

  12. ezmagic - Apr 25, 2012 at 12:22 AM

It’s only 7 games cause hes a laker. If he was on another team he would of got at least 10. I can’t wait to see who he goes crazy on next….David stern is a PU$$Y. Can’t wait til he leaves the NBA.

  13. thraiderskin - Apr 25, 2012 at 1:07 AM

    7 games is fair…

  14. cpfirish - Apr 25, 2012 at 1:36 AM

    He is junk!!

  15. jaymidd - Apr 25, 2012 at 1:54 AM

In honor of Ron Artest I’m going to change my name to “Cure for Aids” and then go run around and inject people with the AIDS virus. Good grief….7 games? That’s it? Sheesh.

  16. wheresdapuck - Apr 25, 2012 at 5:51 AM

Peace is exactly why there is a decline in viewership and game attendance for the NBA. This was simply a “thug” move. Peace should have been suspended anywhere from 15-20 games for this incident.

    • progress2011 - Apr 25, 2012 at 6:07 AM

Your reference to ” thug” is a clear attempt to make your claim against a certain group of people.

We know what you are !!! Don’t hide behind your key phrases and terms. Go ahead and say what you mean, openly.

Plus you are factually incorrect !!! The NBA is one of the largest revenue grossing leagues world wide.

The NBA has successfully transcended internationally, where other leagues have struggled.

Your disdain and dislike for the race of people that currently dominate the NBA, won’t change that.

      • wheresdapuck - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:56 AM

progress2011 – You are obviously a troll by the number of comments you have replied on this blog.

I worked for NBA at one time, and there were many African-Americans that played b-ball at that time – your comment about a “certain group of people”. Dr. J grew up on the streets of Philadephia, but he did not corrupt the game with “thug” moves.

And last, viewership and atttendance is not increasing in the NBA – too many players are in fact “thugs” hiding in a jersey and next, there is little parity in the NBA today.

Maybe you should change your handle to “Anti-progress2012″.

  17. bigkeev124 - Apr 25, 2012 at 6:16 AM

Its A shame they can let Ron I’m from the Hood Artest aka Metta World Peace aka Brawl starter only get 7 games. This has nothing to do with the game or the Lakers, that was blatent, disrespectful and he need his @$$ beat… Cmon Maan!!! I hate his antics and he isnt a tough guy really not sure why he and some in the NBA media think he is…

  18. robluq - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:13 AM

    Threw peace out the window.

  19. kingjeremi84 - Apr 25, 2012 at 8:13 AM

roseann894 your obviously a laker hater to bring up the kobe thing, with that being said the lakers r one of the best org.in the league. look at the championships only the celts r close to the lakers.

  20. Mr. Wright 212 - Apr 25, 2012 at 8:27 AM

You can tell who hates the Lakers with their foolish commentary. Not a rational thought amongst any of these clowns.

  21. mrpostman985 - Apr 25, 2012 at 8:34 AM

Saying dat da nba is full of thugs with tattoos is obviously a racist comment ! I’m not condoning Wat Mwp did but if u watch da video closely u can c dat harden intentionally tried to get in his path and bump him! And everyone mentions the brawl but forget da fact da man was minding his own business when some jackass of a fan threw a drink in his face!! How many people would have let dat slide ????? Exactly !!!

  22. wakiash - Apr 25, 2012 at 9:52 AM

If the Lakers organization had any class at all, they would dismiss Our mess (Artest/World Hater) from the team. He is a time bomb waiting to explode with even more damage than Sunday’s episode. Since the Lakers organization never showed the replay of the incident so their fans could see exactly what happened, I didn’t really expect them to do the right thing following Our-messes’ felonious assault on Hardin!

  23. dirtydavis - Apr 25, 2012 at 12:46 PM

Ron Ron is a beast… Harden had it coming

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Apr 25, 2012 at 12:47 PM

      • chuckj1234 - Apr 25, 2012 at 11:02 PM

Kobe talks trash all the time.

  24. hoytdadd64 - Apr 25, 2012 at 3:13 PM

I’ve been coming to this site for a while now and this is the most I’ve seen people commenting on any topic. And it’s amazing how many racist people on here just want to slam the NBA and Artest as being thugs and gangsters. Not many have an opinion on the situation that’s not based on some kind of racist fueled hatred. At least that’s how it seems to me. And I don’t feel the league is being fair and just in this suspension. 7 games? Was anyone else suspended or fined for any of the other situations lately? Cause there have been a few this past month. And not one suspension, not even for a game!!!

  25. carolinakid - Apr 26, 2012 at 7:03 AM

    METTA WORLD WAR !

Should have been suspended the rest of this year and 20 games into next year.

It wasn’t an accident … cmon people !
