Metta World Peace ejected for Flagrant Two elbow to James Harden’s head

Apr 22, 2012, 5:24 PM EDT

It was not calculated. It was intentional. It was excessive. And man, was it brutal.

In the second quarter of the Thunder’s game against Oklahoma City, Ron Artest/Metta World Peace drove for a dunk and slammed it home. He began to celebrate by pounding his head. James Harden wound up behind him. And then…

Good God.

So that’s going to be the end of the regular season for Ron Artest/Metta World Peace. The question now turns to two questions.

1. What is Harden’s condition? ESPN reported during its telecast that Harden passed all concussion tests and would play, but when he went to the floor, developed a headache and returned to the locker room. He will not return. If further tests reveal a concussion, that could impact Harden’s season significantly. Concussions are an injury we still are struggling to understand and the timing of symptoms is still nebulous.

2. How many games will Artest/MWP get for this? This opens up a Pandora’s Box of issues with regards to the play, Artest’s intent, and his past history. People will want to say that Artest’s history should not render as a factor here. That’s a nice thought, and impossible. It presents a disturbing event in a long history of events, regardless of his positive changes over the past four years. The suspension will almost certainly impact playoff games, it just depends on how many.

The league is likely to render a decision in the next 24 hours.

That’s a play that simply cannot be allowed. “The Punch” on Rudy Tomjanovich by Kermit Washington was an intentional punch but the devastating effects were the result of a bad combination of physics and circumstance. That’s why the league has to protect its players the way it does. And that’s why you’ll see the league respond as it will. This isn’t about the spirit of the game. This is about real-life injuries that can potentially impact lives. Thankfully Harden doesn’t seem to have suffered any long-term, permanent damage.

But this has just become the biggest story in the NBA for all the worst reasons.

Harden had it coming. Been waiting for Ron to knock him (and Wade after the All-Star histrionics).

    • therealhtj - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:00 PM

No one has that coming dude. Seriously.

If MWP gets a lifetime ban, can the Lakers get him off their cap?

  2. eplions0143 - Apr 22, 2012 at 5:34 PM

Mr. Wright 212….your a fool just like MWP/Artest. Suspension for 1st round of playoffs would be about right.

  3. redbullenergydrink - Apr 22, 2012 at 5:40 PM

Rational Lakers fans cannot defend that elbow (and Magic Johnson agrees with me). The NBA should suspend him for 5 games. Totally uncalled for.

    • dondada10 - Apr 22, 2012 at 5:48 PM

      5 games?!

Rest of the season and the playoffs, at least.

Dude’s a repeat offender. Malice in the Palace, anybody?

      • sabatimus - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:25 PM

He changed his name, so he was a different person then ;p

Stupid move..but WTF was Hardin doing getting up on him that quick in the middle if his cheats beating…looks like he was going to disrupt that celebration. Still shouldn’t happen though

    • pudgalvin - Apr 22, 2012 at 6:45 PM

Is there a certain berth you need to give players that are chest beating, with the penalty being a windup elbow to the side of the head? The internet gets a little dumber every day.

    • stickesabado - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:39 PM

      i agree

  7. thekingdave - Apr 22, 2012 at 5:58 PM

Possibly more jaw dropping is Laker fans reaction in the aftermath with Harden laid out on the court. Pathetic.

    • bchapman2011 - Apr 22, 2012 at 6:19 PM

boo hoo ………It would have been even better if he was knocked out cold

      • binkin21 - Apr 22, 2012 at 6:36 PM

Are you f*ckin serious?? Thats one of the most hateful and d*ickish comments ive ever heard. I don’t care if its the player you hate the most in the world on the other team, what Artest did was flat out criminal. I dont care if youre a hardcore Lakers fan either, that was a completely inexcusable elbow by one of the biggest D-bags ever. Show some humanity and grow up. Douche

      • berbes - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:11 PM

who let all these kids in here?

      • kjereld615 - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:39 PM

bchapman2011 every player who plays the game whether they are playing in elementary, high school, college or the pros they are all still people like everybody else. Each player is a father, a brother, a son, a uncle, a nephew, etc. and no one deserves to be “knocked out cold.” A concussion is a serious injury and one that should not be taken lightly. Such a ignorant and idiotic statement on your part.

      • jimeejohnson - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Good cannot exist without bchapman2011 , I mean evil!

  8. dhillca - Apr 22, 2012 at 6:19 PM

    Douche bag
    Ban him from the NBA

  9. Fred - Apr 22, 2012 at 6:29 PM

Artest is a menace to the league and its players. He deserves a lifetime ban. The NBA is on notice now. If he gets a piddly 5 game suspension and comes back and does serious harm to someone from an act outside the bounds of the game — which his assault on Harden certainly was — the NBA should be held liable for compensation for any injuries suffered. Ban him now!

  10. 00maltliquor - Apr 22, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Harden shouldn’t have tried to nut up on MWP when he was celebrating, he was all up on him and for no reason. Harden was asking for it.

    • 4thquartermagic - Apr 22, 2012 at 6:50 PM

Your probably the kind of guy that thinks the girl who is dressed slutty and gets raped is “asking for it” too.

Bottom line is MWP season is over and rightfully so.

      • 00maltliquor - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:43 PM

Yep, you got me there. ….WTF man you can’t be serious, what goes on in that sick little head of yours and how does that even compare to what I said??

      • jimeejohnson - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Because you blame the victim! Switch to light beer, dude.

    • berbes - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:18 PM

i expected so much more from someone namiing herself “malt liquor”…

    • kjereld615 - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:47 PM

Harden wasn’t trying to “nut up on MWP” when the other team scores two players and normally supposed to stay in near the player in bounding the ball so if one is covered the in bounder which in this case was Ibaka can in bound the ball to the other available player. Harden and Westbrook were just setting up to be those two players that Ibaka could in bound the ball to when Artest hit him. That’s why Harden was near Artest.

    • Kurt Helin - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:50 PM

This may be the single worst comment ever on this blog… which is saying something.

      • 00maltliquor - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Between the occasional racist comments, mocking the dead (a while back) and allllll the comments made about you being on your knees and slurping off Bron-Bron (and there’s been a ton of those remarks, some pretty graphic) and THAT’S the worst, huh?? Ohh-kay

    • jimeejohnson - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:58 PM

Because you blame the victim! Switch to light beer, dude.

    • lyndseymarieee - Apr 22, 2012 at 9:41 PM

harden was standing in that spot when the play happened and after. he wasn’t “getting up on” artest. if nothing else he was waiting on the in-bound pass.

  11. mungman69 - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:03 PM

World Peace? What’s in a name? He should change his name to World’s A Hole. Throw him out for the year.

    • jimeejohnson - Apr 22, 2012 at 9:00 PM

      How about Metta World War!

  12. cwwgk - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:08 PM

What a pathetic human being. His teammates, the Lakers organization and the NBA as a whole should be embarrassed.

  13. pike573 - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:11 PM

Yeah, uh, watch the live action replay. Harden I just standing there and is actually trying to get out of the way of the chest pounding histrionics. Any way you see you see it though the elbow to the grape was many game suspension worthy. I say whole playoffs.

  14. ddtla - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:13 PM

Wow! James Harden what were you thinking. If you looking at it, it looks like he is going to shove Ron Artest. Oh I am sorry someone mentioned the brawl in the place didn’t Jim gray say it was Ben wallaces fault and the fans the Nba screwed the pacers that’s was the beginning of David sterns downfall. Bye the way Kendrick Perkins has a history of dirty elbows and a bad temper. Another thing as for the brawl at the palace if u were one of the players you would have not walked away. So many

    • Kurt Helin - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:48 PM

James Harden was walking up to get the ball for the inbound. Guys bump into each other all the time. That is at least 5 games.

      • mlblogsrickr2009 - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:28 PM

Obviously Metta screwed up, big time. He should get a long suspension and a big fine. His season should be over. However, Harden was walking the opposite way he should have walked to take an inbound pass. And if you are looking for an inbound pass, you create space between yourself and your opponent. Harden walked up against Metta to intimidate him, or to show him that he was not intimidated. If you watched the game you can see a lot of this going on. In no way do I excuse Metta for his actions, however, hits similar to this go on in NBA games all the time, often without any fouls being called. This one was just to noticeable.

      • stickesabado - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:40 PM

yeah okkkkk… keep telling yourself that..

  15. ddtla - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:17 PM

So many haters on the blogs who nothing about sports but talk trash. Artest is a douche bag really the guy is totally different off the court 2 game suspension if that.

    • stickesabado - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:42 PM

i agree, always something to say about someone’s game when they prob can’t make a lay-up themselves…

and then talking about how trashy classless someone is then say stupid immature things on here towards someone else..

      gotta love trolls

  16. sdl65 - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:27 PM

Just kick that POS out of the league forever! His act has gotten tired and old.

  17. jtchernak - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:29 PM

Not sure why it would have been better if he got knocked out cold it was brutal no need for 11 year olds to be asking for that

  18. mahhelo - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:46 PM

Not that it justifies what happened, but I wonder if Harden’s trash talking to Kobe during there first matchup played a role in this. From what I remember, it was said that nobody had ever talked to Kobe the way Harden did during that game. Maybe MWP is in the hockey spirit and is protecting his teams star player.

  19. glink123 - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:54 PM

I could easily see this being 10 games. How is this any different from what Bynum did to JJ Berrera? When you factor in Artest’s history, and the fact that he’s borderline psychotic, I don’t see how they let this disaster-in-waiting remain in the league.

  20. ncarolinarn7 - Apr 22, 2012 at 7:59 PM

Boys will be boys. No concussion no foul. Move along nothing to see here.

  21. ncarolinarn7 - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:08 PM

I just watched it, my opinion Hardin crowded him and had no business in his personal space when procession had changed. Hardin was interfering with Artest celebrating. Truly that said Ron shouldn’t have pulled back and cranked the elbow on him. Lesson to Hardin don’t interfere with MWP’s happy time after dunking. Hardin has a stupid haircut to boot. :)

  22. lakerade - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Out as long as harden’s out plus two games

  23. maddogg911 - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:12 PM

Harden had it coming. OKC is soft and gutless, no one did anything to protect their teammate. OKC is weak!!!

  24. thacloser86 - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:15 PM

I like the elbow but he should’ve gotten Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant

  25. BigBeachBall - Apr 22, 2012 at 8:17 PM

OKC is a better team, but that elbow just made things real interesting….
