Tyreke Evans is not cool with how the Kings have handled him

Apr 22, 2012, 9:00 AM EDT

Tyreke Evans

SI.com reports:

Tyreke Evans‘ agent, Arn Tellem, made a rare appearance tonight to express his concerns about the former Rookie of the Year’s role. He met with Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie, Evans’ brother, Reggie, and another Tellem rep as well. Source close to Evans says he’s frustrated with how marginalized he’s become. Evans’ reps are encouraging him to be more vocal about his perspective going forward.

And of course, Evans is up for an extension this summer.

The Kings drafted Evans, played him at point guard, watched him earn rookie of the year, even as everyone said he was poor fit at point guard. Then they moved him to shooting guard, watched him struggle, and became concerned, then drafted Isaiah Thomas and Jimmer Fredette, and started wheeling him out at small forward some. The results have been less than impressive. And now the Kings are clearly considering moving on, building behind DeMarcus Cousins and Isaiah Thomas and whoever they pick up in the draft. And it’s hard to blame them as Evans drifts, takes too many pull-ups, and fails to effectively run in a system.

But at the same time, there is more than one way to run point guard. You can be a table-setter, a distributor, a scorer, or a corner shooter. You can be a combo guard, a pure point, a scoring point, an initiator, a finisher. It’s all in how the offense is built. You can’t help but wonder if Evans had been drafted somewhere with a cohesive system, with coaching that was stable and a better plan for the future if things would have worked out well. But those things wouldn’t have changed his leadership issues which have brought questions.

For Evans now, it’s about trying to establish where his career goes. It’s not hard to see him being unable to adjust to team’s adjustments to him, and flaming out. It’s also not hard to see him going somewhere with better coaching and with some motivation, and taking over to a certain degree. Evans remains an exceptionally gifted athlete with the ability to run an offense, even if the results so far haven’t been good enough. Someone is likely to unlock the mystery. It just seems every day more and more like it won’t be Sacramento.
