Report: Knicks expect Amare Stoudemire back Friday

Got to love New York fans — at first they crow about how much better the team is playing with Amare Stoudemire out and the offense flowing through Carmelo Anthony, then they complain that ‘Melo needs a second scorer to go with him.

Well, love the idea or hate it, looks like the Knicks are going to get Stoudemire back on Friday, reports the New York Post.

And though he has eyed the Knicks’ last-ever visit to New Jersey (Wednesday) as his big return from a bulging disk, the Knicks believe having him back in Cleveland on Friday is more realistic. Stoudemire has had two contact scrimmages, but yesterday’s practice was canceled because the club was beaten up further with Tyson Chandler’s knee injury. That hasn’t helped Stoudemire get into game shape.

Stoudemire will not be in the lineup when the Knicks face the Celtics Tuesday. That will be the 12th game he has missed due to a back injury.

If the Knicks are going to make any splash in the playoffs — whether it is against the Heat, Pacers or Bulls — they are going to need Stoudemire and the threat he provides as a second scoring option. This is ‘Melo’s team now, and Mike Woodson has them playing better defense, but they are going to need Stoudemire. And other guys to step up as well. So he needs to get some games under his belt.

Not sure too many real knowledgeable NY fans were happy STAT has been out. Sure it has given Melo the opportunity to dominate the ball and do what he does best (work out of the post) but we all know in order to win in the playoffs you need more firepower then what the Knicks are currently packing. Still not sold on exactly how effectively those two will co-exist but they definitely need Amare in the lineup and I am glad to see him back. Maybe the NY band wagoners were saying they didn’t want STAT back but listening to those people is a joke. Melo has been killing it at the 4 which is obviously Amare’s position but the way this team is playing having him return will not cause them to take a step back. Look at Z-Bo in Memphis and how they are using him. Amare is way too valuable so hopefully Woody will figure out how to integrate him back into the flow, even if that means bringing him off the bench or running the offense through him when Melo is on the bench.

He’s way too valuable as a player, and way too expensive for the Knicks not to use him. But how is the question. Amar’e played his otherworldly ball last year mostly at the 5. If he can take the physical toll, he should do that again. They key is just not playing him with Chandler. Although it seems preposterous to have a 20M man coming off the bench, that’s where he would be best. Dominating 2nd units. Until that is he regains some of the old form, which he seemed to be doing right before the injury. The Melo thing is working right now (another game last night of “Oh that’s why you trade Chandler/Gallo/Felton/401K plan to have Melo). So I say don’t screw with that. But integrate Amar’e and give him some space and let him earn some of that MONEY.
