New owner will mean new name, logo for Hornets soon

“Hornets” is not a name that fits with New Orleans.

It was a leftover from when George Shinn moved his team from Charlotte — a city nicknamed “the hornets’ nest” — but “Hornets” goes together with the spirit of New Orleans about as much as tacos go with gumbo.

New Hornets owner Tom Benson is a New Orleans native who gets the city. And you can put him on the list of people who wants a new name for the team. Tomorrow. Which is all that matters. Here is what Benson told the Times-Picayune:

“We need to find a name like (Jazz),” Benson said, referring to New Orleans first NBA team that relocated to Salt Lake City in 1979. “Whether we can get that or let us use that, you’ve got to know we’re working on it. We’d like to change it tomorrow. We have not gotten that approved, but we’re not letting up on it, either. Because we’ve got a good relationship with the commissioner and his people and we’re going to be on them daily to do something.”

At this point, Jazz is not going to happen, even though that name fits in Utah about as well as a crawfish boil. Look, Lakers fits a whole lot better in Minnesota than it does Los Angeles but they’re not giving it up either.

But there are a host of other potential names that can work and you can bet in a couple years Benson will have the Hornets called something appropriate.

And you know, that black and gold color scheme of the saints would look cool on an NBA uniform. Just sayin’.

Who cares?! We don’t need to hear about everything you posted on your blog.

Oh good I can go there and reread the same thing. i’ll get right on that after I watch another 2 and a half men rerun…

      Pro Tips:

      1. Jumbo Sports Blog? For @ $10 you can get yourself a domain name from Godaddy that does’t sound like a appetizer party tray from the local Sports Bar.

      2. Stop telling us that we can find a story (verbatim) on your blog that we have clearly already wandered upon. “You know, I’d like to read the same exact story again, yet on a site with far less polish.” Trust me, no one thinks that.

      3. Original content. Show a bit of originality and create unique content opposed to sucking the teet of PBT. If you at least elaborate on what we all have clearly read instead of CTRL+C followed by a golf clap worth “Lookie what I did, ma!” you might earn a modicum of respect. Hell… you may even develop a useful product and gain a following.

To quote Derrick Coleman during his run as the British Knights spokesman; “You’re Welcome.”

Finally! About time somebody said all that.

    • david0303 - Apr 14, 2012 at 6:08 PM

no one cares that you reblogged this cuz nobody wants to read the same thing twice and the better question might be why would you reblog anything that kurt writes? my dog can write better than this guy

gotta love how all the put down replies each have dozens of thumb ups and one thumbs down… let me guess how jumbo voted…

  2. raidmagic - Apr 14, 2012 at 2:17 PM

Would it be bad form to have the New Orleans Saints in the NBA too? Kurt has a point the colors and that logo would look killer on the hard court.

  3. obiwanbonogi - Apr 14, 2012 at 2:20 PM

    Hurricanes is available.

  4. Josh - Apr 14, 2012 at 2:35 PM

Would “Hurricanes” be in poor taste?

    • tibbs7 - Apr 14, 2012 at 3:05 PM

Their theme song could be the Scorpions – Rock You Like A Hurricane.

    • philwauke - Apr 14, 2012 at 4:02 PM

      New Orleans Gulfs (of Mexico)

  5. rempokesfan - Apr 14, 2012 at 2:37 PM

C’mon, the guys in Utah aren’t thinking straight! Benson should help them position it as “righting the wrong” the NBA foisted on ’em when the Jazz moved to Utah and the league wouldn’t let them change the name. A PR bonanza!

Run a contest in the Beehive State for a new name and give New Orleans back the Jazz!

Maybe the “Utah Malones?” How ’bout the “Utah Killer Bees?” (They could have a helluva dance team with the “Honey Bees” and even an alternative male dance troupe, the “Queen Bees.”) Surely there’s SOMETHING in Utah worth commemorating in the team moniker?

OH! That’s why the NBA won’t let them change the name! Nevermind.

How about the New Orleans Blues?

      New Orleans Breakers

  7. jturbo1402003 - Apr 14, 2012 at 3:00 PM

They woukd be kinda cool as he owns both teams to have them both named the Saints w same uni colors and style. It would never happen and probally not legal w trademarks copyrights and websites and such as ine of teams eventually will have new ownership. But it would be different and yet the same.

  8. rocketsredbear - Apr 14, 2012 at 3:19 PM

You sure Black and Gold will look good?

    • Josh - Apr 14, 2012 at 3:52 PM

You must be color blind, because thats clearly blue and gold.

Gold as the primary color would not look good. However, gold as the secondary color to black looks sharp.

  9. mrlaloosh - Apr 14, 2012 at 3:21 PM

Brass, Devils, Dominos, Pirates, take VooDoo from that horrible Arena team, Jammers, Lions, Yada,YadaYada…..

  10. sillychrizzy - Apr 14, 2012 at 3:31 PM

    the Mardi Gras Ballers!!!

  11. lowender75 - Apr 14, 2012 at 4:08 PM

I’m sure “Bounty Hunters” is available

  12. lorddarkhelmet - Apr 14, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Just take their current color scheme and change the darker blue to black. So far as the name change, it’s kinda tricky. Blues fits geographically but it the name of a hockey team. I don’t know if anyone would throw a fit about Cajuns. Huricanes would actually be a pretty good name but you know people would have a problem with it.

  13. lionsmark09 - Apr 14, 2012 at 5:10 PM

There is a hockey team called the hurricanes too. So….

  14. udtfrogmanvet - Apr 14, 2012 at 5:15 PM

New Orleans VooDoo or Zydecos? How about Bayou?

  15. strawhatcook - Apr 14, 2012 at 5:16 PM

Im fine with whatever as long as is not Bucs like in the throwbacks we wore a few years back

  16. tcclark - Apr 14, 2012 at 5:51 PM

I think they’d have a better chance taking the name VooDoo from their AFL team.

Personally, when I think of New Orleans, I think of Mardi Gras. And when I think of Mardi Gras, I think of drunk momentarily topless women. So naturally the team name should be the New Orleans Flash or the New Orleans Flashers. i think it works great

  17. thecrazyasianinseccountry - Apr 14, 2012 at 6:14 PM

How about the “New Orleans Saints B-Baller?”
    … No ? …at least maybe ?

  18. dshortt55 - Apr 14, 2012 at 6:15 PM

  19. billymc75 - Apr 14, 2012 at 6:16 PM

They’ll still suck cause he still has to pay Brees! Lol I’d first start by hire Bruce Pearl

  20. lorddarkhelmet - Apr 14, 2012 at 6:27 PM

    VooDoo ain’t bad I guess…

Bruce Pearl is a classic college coach. Great recruiter, hell of a rah rah guy, not so great Xs and Os. Plus they already have a very good head coach.

  21. tomtravis76 - Apr 14, 2012 at 6:44 PM

The New Orleans Sound or New Orleans Sinners.

I like the idea of using the same color scheme as the Saints.
