It’s getting even weirder…

The Maloof’s just held a presser this morning, with George on point suddenly stating that the Moloof’s new, preferred position is to…

….renovate Power Balance Pavilion.

Um…..WHAT?

This is the same arena that the Maloof’s have insisted is unfixable since at least 2004. This is the same arena that OSHA investigators have already determined cannot be renovated without tearing it down to the cement pillars, due to is beint built “on the cheap” in the mid 1980′s.

Beyond any shadow of a doubt, the Maloof’s just confirmed a few things:

1) They are broke and cannot afford the arena deal they agreed to 2 months ago
2) The NBA will not allow them to relocate the team out of Sacramento
3) In one fell swoop, they’ve thrown the mayor, David Stern, the NBA and the City of Sacramento under the bus

Comments in the SacBee this morning are running 90% in a state of disbelief and total anger directed at the Maloof’s. Don’t be surprised to see an epic, organized protest that leaves the arena 90-05% empty for the 1st quarter of a game in the near future.

Sacramento has amazing fans. They love their team. They support their team. They deserve their team. They also deserve ownership who doesn’t jerk them around. For all his problems, even Donald Sterling doesn’t treat Clippers fans the way the Maloof’s treat their fans.

An end game is coming very soon from all of this…but I don’t yet know what it is. All I know is that everyone is ready for this circus to end.

I saw this coming a mile away.The Maloofs have no intention of staying there and are looking to get into the big market and get the huge TV contract with Fox once the Lakers new network launches.They only agreed to this deal because the pressure was on them from both the city of Sacramento and David Stern and they basically agreed to get done with the meetings.Remember Al Davis had also agreed to build a stadium in irwindale ,how’d that work out?The difference Stern yields way more power over the NBA than Rozelle ever did over Davis and he can” recommend” they sell.As of right now they are lighting the fire that will burn the bridge with the fans of Sacramento and the city leaders.

I think the key to this situation is that the Maloofs reneged on a deal brokered by David Stern.

Even though his power has diminished slightly, Stern is still the most powerful commissioner in sports, and you don’t cross the David.

What a bunch of BS. Stern needs to put the Maloofs out to pasture. There is a rabid fan base, a newly funded arena, and owners/investors waiting in the wings. There is 1.8 million potential fans in a captive market. New owners and management may actually build a winner. Its a beautiful city, like 10 years ago players would love it if the ownership had a clue. Webber, Peja, Vlade, Bibby, Hedo and Christie all enjoyed their time in Sacramento.

Stern’s unwillingness (or inability) to rein in embarassing owners on his watch will be one more black eye in his legacy. The Maloofs are an absolute joke! Get those trust fund babies out of the owner’s box, for “basketball reasons.” Even Selig did what he had to do to get Frank McCourt out of LA.

Yeah, that’s right. I’m unfavorably comparing Stern to Bud freaking Selig. That’s just sad.
