Jason Kidd wants to come back for one more season

At age 39, Jason Kidd is having the worst season of his NBA career — 5.9 points per game on 34.7 percent shooting, 5.3 assists per game and a PER of 12.5. All of those are career lows. He has been slowed by back pain and other physical issues.

But he wants to come back for one more season and the feeling is mutual with the Mavericks, reports Marc Stein at ESPN.

“I want to play another year,” Kidd told ESPN.com…

Sources with knowledge of the Mavericks’ thinking likewise indicate that management is determined to find a way to re-sign the former Cal star in free agency even amid the roster clearout that Dallas has planned to create the requisite salary-cap space to pursue Dallas-area native Deron Williams in free agency this summer.

This makes sense if Kidd is Williams’ backup (a role he has said before he is willing to accept). Bringing Kidd out for 15 minutes a game will help settle down the second unit and get guys some good looks if they move off the ball — nobody is questioning if Kidd can still pass the rock.

Anything can happen, but I’d be surprised if Kidd isn’t a Maverick for one more season.
