Stephon Marbury to get statue in China because 1 million fans want it

Former NBA superstar Stephon Marbury (C)

Stephon Marbury has taken the improbable journey from New York Knicks distraction and cast off to hero of Beijing basketball.

When he went to China it was with plenty of us snickering , but the guy has jumped into the Chinese team and culture with both feet, launched his own line of shoes, helped grow the team and now he is the guy who led his team to its first ever Chinese Basketball Association title.

He averaged 33.4 points per game in the final series — but he couldn’t be the MVP because league rules require that to be a China-born player.

So HoopChina.com started a campaign to recognize Marbury with a statue (hat tip to Dan Devine at Ball Don’t Lie and Sean Sweeney at Dime). Within a week more than 1 million people had signed the petition and the project had taken on a life of it’s own.

That was enough to turn the idea of a Marbury statue into reality. Below are a couple photos. It is a recreation of Marbury when he held up the championship trophy. Snicker if you want, but he has done good and made himself a legend in the world’s most populous nation. And he gets a statue.
