Cousins accuses Blake Griffin of being “actor,” faking fouls

Apr 6, 2012, 9:56 AM EDT

Blake Griffin, Chris Paul AP

DeMarcus Cousins and Blake Griffin were banging on each other pretty hard Thursday night in what Kings coach Keith Smart called a great football game.

But Cousins was the one who ended up in foul trouble, playing just 18 minutes due to it (while Griffin had a double double and even hit key jumpers late). And Cousins was pissed about how the calls went.

He was especially angry about his fifth foul, where he swiped at the ball while Griffin held it. Griffin grabbed his eye as if he were hit, but Cousins would have none of that. Decide for yourself if this is a foul:

Here is what Boogie Cousins said after the game, via the Sacramento Bee (hat tip to Tom Ziller).

“I guess the wind from my hand hit him in the eye,” Cousins said. “I guess he got fouled by the wind….

“(Griffin is) in L.A. where actors belong,” Cousins said. “He’s an actor, so of course he would say (that he wasn’t worried about it).”

The two teams play again Saturday.

Griffin is developing a reputation among players (and some fans) as, well, as Eric Freeman said “a jerk.” This is not the first time he has been accused of acting to draw a foul, he talks a lot on the court, plus there is a sense that he whines whenever he is touched then takes some cheap fouls the other way. His aggressiveness certainly means he gets away with some things — both of his dunks on Pau Gasol Wednesday were offensive fouls, but there were no calls.

ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz described Griffin as playing a “confrontational” style of basketball. It gets under opponents’ skin. That doesn’t excuse the kind of cheap shot Jason Smith put on him, but you can bet other guys are going to start to push back and be physical with him.

Saying Blake is an actor is like saying trees have leaves. Stating the obvious.

    Getting in their it.

Yeah, we’ll see who’s laughing after the Clippers get bounced in the second round and Griffin keeps crying about calls

    i dont believe he is….

have you not seen his kia commercials??

you dont need to act much in a commercial, but man that is without a doubt the worst acting ever….

Blake Griffin is a stud. He moves the needle. The rest of you are whining lil’ beotches.

  5. dannymac17 - Apr 6, 2012 at 11:50 AM

Wow @ they were both offensive fouls.

Had that been LeChoke dunking on that 7 foot life size tampon, Kurt would have dedicated an entire article to how classic is was, and how LeChoke is on another level.

    Give it up.

    • lakerdownunder - Apr 6, 2012 at 6:00 PM

I think you mean 7ft WINNING life size tampon….

  6. captainwisdom8888 - Apr 6, 2012 at 12:06 PM

To whining NBA players: None of you would care about Blake’s “acting” if he weren’t embarrassing all of you on a nightly basis. Man up and stop the guy…otherwise stop your bi*ching.

The way I see it you got 2 options while defending Blake Griffin near the rim:

    1. You foul him VERY, VERY hard.
    2. You step out of the way and concede defeat like a nancy.

**Now I understand why hapless defenders opt to just whine about Blake after the game. Pathetic.

    • lakerdownunder - Apr 6, 2012 at 6:04 PM

After all the noise about his dunks ageist the Lakers…he only scored 13 points in a loss. Brilliant. …Sessions scored 16 and the Lakers got him for Luke Walton

But…..this doesn’t take away from the fact that pau got murdered twice…(non clipper fan…truth)

  7. dolphinatic - Apr 6, 2012 at 12:26 PM

Yea, Over the back and a mean elbow to the head. He’s lucky he could whoop up Pau or he might have been in trouble. NBA officiating is the worst in sports. Star Calls and no calls in this league will always make me wonder if the fix is in on some games. Somewhere soccer err futbol is laughing.

  8. rodge1 - Apr 6, 2012 at 12:42 PM

Griffin is a great dunker. But can he make jump shots… Reminds me of a Shawn Kemp but with 27 less kids

  9. reesesteel23 - Apr 6, 2012 at 1:01 PM

    #1 Everyone flops……..EVERYONE

#2 Everyone always complains about how soft the league is getting. Why call a foul on amazing plays like that? Seriously….

#3 Bias opinions should be void! Speak as fan, not as a team whom Blake Griffin has posterized this season!

This is all getting pretty old. Who’s a fake tough guy? Who is an actor? Who wants Stan Van Gundy dead? TOO MANY QUESTIONS.

  11. quityourcrying - Apr 6, 2012 at 1:31 PM

After all the talk in the NBA about players flopping too much, you wanna point the finger at Blake. All players act, it has now become the norm.
Cousins is just a whining sore looser. Man up, and quit crying about every play that doesn’t go your way. The whole time he was benched he had the face of a little brat that didn’t get his toy.

Also, to say that Blake fouled Gasol is stupid. If a player is going to contest a dunk expect a collision! What was Blake suppose to do, tuck in his elbows!?!? QUIT YOUR CRYING!!!

  12. jkaflagg - Apr 6, 2012 at 4:59 PM

Would the Kings trade Cousins for Griffin tomorrow ? the Lakers for Pau Gasol ? The Knicks for Carmelo Anthony ?

Yes, yes and yes – in a heartbeat. The more other teams whine about other players, the more they confirm their inferiority.

Does he whine and act out to get calls – yes, just like every NBA star who ever lived( and yes, that includes MJ, Magic & Bird). The game and the world are not fair places – deal with it.

    • savvybynature - Apr 6, 2012 at 5:34 PM

I would take Cousins over Griffin today to build a team around. Cousins has a higher upside than Griffin imo, though they can both be great. Griffin is more a finesse player and I’ve seen him taken out of some games by opposing defenses. Cousins only problem is taking himself out of games by doing stupid stuff.
Pretending to get hit in the eye and throwing yourself out of bounds when no one touches you to try and trick a ref is just weak and not what fans want to see.
If you did it once in like a big game b/c you needed it maybe, but all game every game? Clippers = great highlights but boring to watch except CP3 (who is phenomenal).

  13. asuthyo - Apr 6, 2012 at 9:30 PM

Just another of the multitude of reasons to not like Blake Griffin.

I am starting to like Boogie though.

  14. bcb1999 - Apr 7, 2012 at 2:35 AM

If other players are whining about you getting all the calls, you must be doing something right…

  15. mat9844 - Apr 7, 2012 at 10:25 AM

You should watch him on Funny or Die — I never laughed so hard in my life. He’s great.
