A lot of times former players, especially the great ones don't really pan out as general managers. I would have him as a head coach in a heartbeat though

I think more importantly is that, with the exception of West, the players listed were good players, but not superstars. I think superstars often see all the flaws in how other players don't measure up to them. Players that are below the superstar level may have a better understanding of how different skills will fit together on the court. In Kidd's case, he is currently below superstar level (some might say always was), so he may not have that superstar mentality. But, then again, his whining about not getting calls from the refs just because they won the title last year might seem like he still thinks he is a superstar.

He would likely have to be willing to take a lesser position to learn the ropes. I don't know if he will succeed if someone drops him directly into the GM position. Would he be willing to take an assistant GM position to learn the ropes or consider it beneath him?

Good article. IMHO, the list of former players who have gone on to be successful GMs all have something in common. John Paxon has a 4-year degree from Notre Dame. Pat Riley has a 4-year degree from Kentucky. Mitch Kupchak has a 4-year degree from North Carolina. Danny Ainge has a 4-year degree from BYU. Jason Kidd has a ... oh that's right, he only stayed for two years at Cal.
