I don’t begrudge the kid for leaving early to make millions of dollars. What I don’t get is why? It’s not like his family is a hardship situation. This is supposedly the deepest draft in years so if he’s projected 17, why not stay another year and move up the draft ladder? Ostensibly, he should be drafted higher next year and in not such a deep draft. He might go top 5 or 10, which is definitely more guaranteed money through life of the first contract.

If the kid’s happy being a mid-1st-rounder and having a mid-1st-rounder career, good for him. Another year at Duke would only improve both of those situations, but whatever.

It’s really pretty simple.

He’s ready for the NBA. Doc knows it. The rest of the NBA knows it.

He’s ready from a basketball standpoint, and unlike so many others who leave college early, he’s ready from a maturity standpoint, having been raised well by his parents.

The fact of the matter is whereas Austin was previously referred to as “Doc’s son” pretty soon we will hear Doc referred to as “Austin’s dad.”
