Mickael Pietrus injured after hard fall, released from hospital

Mar 24, 2012, 12:15 PM EDT

UPDATE March 24, 12:15 pm: This has to be taken as good news — Pietrus stayed behind the team and spent the night in Philadelphia, but not in the hospital.

He now has been cleared to return to Boston, reports A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com. Which is very good news. He may miss a game or two — and may have to be cleared under the league’s new concussion guidelines — but after seeing the injury this was a much better outcome than was feared.

UPDATE March 23, 11:26 pm: Doc Rivers said after the game that Pietrus will spend the night in the hospital and undergo more tests, but that he was in good condition. Well, for a guy who had to be carted off the floor.

9:46 pm: We can only hope this is nothing serious.

With just over five minutes left in the second quarter of the Celtics game against the Sixers Friday night, Mickael Pietrus took a pass from Rajon Rondo as he curled into the lane (a set Boston runs for Ray Allen all the time). As Pietrus went up to shoot Lou Williams went for the block and ended up knocking Pietrus down where his necked snapped hard (the injury is described by the Celtics as a neck injury).

Pietrus had to be carted off the court but we do not yet know anything of his status. He was able to move his legs and arms while on the court — the game stopped for 10 minutes — but they put him in a neck brace before he was taken off the court on a stretcher.

Pietrus started the game as Ray Allen was inactive due to an ankle injury. Marquis Daniels started the second half in place of Pietrus. After the injury the Celtics seemed to play with a little extra fire.

We should add that the foul by Williams was not flagrant and clearly was not with the intent to injure. It was a play on the ball where the the outcome was unfortunate.

We will update his status as we get information.

When was the last time a basketball player was taken out on a stretcher?

  2. jjordannba - Mar 23, 2012 at 10:11 PM

This same exact thing happened to Marquis Daniels in 2010 against the Magic. I swear the Celtics have the worse luck i don’t care what anybody says, Every time something good happens to this team something happens that’s twice a bad, I mean this is about the 4th injury to a key player this year.

  5. tyler200829 - Mar 23, 2012 at 10:36 PM

    God let him be ok

  6. fahlso - Mar 23, 2012 at 10:49 PM

I think it is just his pride thats hurt, didn’t look that bad. Basketball players are just soft, sort of like soccer players. He probably won’t even miss any time. Remember when Dwayne Wade needed a wheelchair because of a separated shoulder?

That looks really bad hopefully he is ok . BTW I hated when the announcers tried to say it was some sort of flop. I know they didn’t know how bad it was at the time but come on. Get Well Soon MP .

If you are not one of the Big 4, you are injured or out for the season.

Get well Air France! We miss you in down here in Orlando.. where you belong.

Have to agree. Orlando shouldve kept him. He was having a good game too. That dunk on Spencer Hawes was vicious. Get well Pietrus.

When I was watching the game, I thought he was just doing the soccer thing where he pretended to be injured and the trainers would bring in the magic towel and they’d be back in the game…had no idea that it was this serious…

Thankfully it looks like he’s going to be OK. C’s bench has been absolutely decimated this year by freak occurrences though… http://www.lucidsportsfan.com/2012_03_01_archive.html#1891579327721093206
