Video: Bruce Bowen’s jersey retirement in San Antonio

Mar 22, 2012, 3:10 PM EST

There was some controversy about the Spurs deciding to retire Bruce Bowen’s No. 12. Most of that seemed to come from outside San Antonio, but it was there. People said that Bowen was a glorified role player not a guy who was integral to the Spurs titles.

Gregg Popovich didn’t feel that way. That’s good enough for me.

Above is the unveiling of the jersey and part of Bowen’s speech. Enjoy. The only thing that would have made it better? A little bow tie on the jersey in the rafters.

Who cares what people outside of SA think? Dude was beloved, helped them win some jewelry. If the team decided to retire the janitor’s broom, it’s probably the smart thing to do.

A little bowtie on the jersey in the rafters? How about the bottom half of Bowen’s legs hanging from the rafters. Those were his defensive weapons! MFer damn near ruined some players careers with dangerous stunts like stepping under their feet, kneeing them, kicking them, etc. I never understood why some opposing coach didn’t have some scrub take Bowen out! I damn sure would have, the cheap shot artist deserved it!
